Well this just changed my opinion on to prime or not with Revell Chrome Spray. I agree the chrome has a much better depth to it with the primer/gloss black method. Another thing I didn't realize was how much it improves the durability of the Revell Chrome Spray. I've been spraying it onto straight plastic and if I look at the chrome wrong it will smudge no matter how long I've let it dry. Seriously, I have parts that have been sprayed 2 months ago I won't touch as it rubs right off and smudges. So I am going to do the prime/gloss black and see how much better it is in my own experience. Glad you did the decanting part too, thanks!

It’s my pleasure…I don’t want to leave doubts in anyone’s mind (including my own). I’m gonna decant one more time for the last video that’s coming up- I want to make sure the crazing I got when I applied the Revell Chrome to the metal primed photoetch isn’t delivery related, and more of a compatibility issue. I suspect it’s a combination of both, but that’s why I’m going to experiment.

I used Molotow chrome paint from their pen, no decanting needed, just pour into airbrush, worked great....
@FranksModelWorks
@FranksModelWorks 5 ай бұрын
It takes too long to dry, if it ever dries at all. It’s not resilient and smears with the lightest handling. Molotow is an ink, and not a paint. Inks degrade over time more quickly than paint. It’s fine for oleo struts on planes or touch ups on kit chrome, but just isn’t tough enough to withstand just about any handling.

Just found your channel late today and have been enjoying your banter and the information. I had to hit the subscribe button as you will be a nice break from some of the other modeling channels. The one area that has given me troubles in the past was removing the thick clear lacquer layer as i am allergic to lacquer thinner, so the process was always not fun.
@FranksModelWorks
@FranksModelWorks 5 ай бұрын
Removing the lacquer layer can be tough. Sometimes it takes the purple stuff, bleach, alcohol to get rid of it all. If I can, I’ll try to sand off what’s creating problems and then give it another dip. The sanding can compromise the clear and make it easier for the strippers to get the rest off. The last 11 words of the previous sentence can be very problematic if taken out of context.
@ChoppersModelworks

@@FranksModelWorks No problems Frank, that's kind of what i had to do last time and was a pain as the lacquer was thick around the wheel lugs for example. I may have to do some tests now as i am wondering with how much the different base colors made i may want to try a dark blue or even plumb purple for a base coat.

Frank, great tutorial on using Revell's chrome spray paint. I just picked up a can and will be using it soon. Since I don't air brush I need to use spray cans. Do you think that the Revell chrome would work over Tamiya gloss black lacquer out of a spray can?
@FranksModelWorks
@FranksModelWorks 5 ай бұрын
It probably will work fine, but you know my mantra by now: Test first, and NOT on the project! We have to work on convincing you to get an airbrush! I just ordered a Gaahleri airbrush (I need another airbrush like I need a hole in my head) and it looks like they have some really affordable setups on their site. I’ll probably do a review of the airbrush when it gets here.

So, I want to chrome a 3D printed Mercury sleeper for my 1/14 scale Peterbilt r/c semi using the Revell Chrom paint. Unfortunately, this is a piece that will be handled alot due to the fact that the battery has to be placed in the sleeper which must be removed in order to do so. Is there a process to make the Revell paint more resilient to handling like a 2k clear or just wear gloves when handling? Great video.
@FranksModelWorks
@FranksModelWorks 4 күн бұрын
@@lthutchins9473 In every case that I tried to clear coat over the Revell Chrome Spray, the finish was dulled by the clear. The finish itself is fairly durable, but not durable enough to withstand being handled over and over again. With 2K Gloss Clear, Revell Chrome looks like a really glossy gray. It diminishes the gloss a great deal.

@@FranksModelWorks I must be doing something wrong then. Even after 48 hours, the Revell still grabbed my fingerprints. I had a FB member recommend Spaz Stix Ultra for clear. I've been using Alclad, as well as the rechroming services for many years now, and obviously there is really no comparison between chrome paint of any type and vacuum metallizing, AKA plastic chroming. But it's hard to find people to do it anymore. I have not tried Revell chrome yet, but the main question I have of it is, Can it be black washed when used on a grille or similar part? That's the main failure of the airbrush chrome paints, they all go to that ugly smudged look when you try black washing, which is imperative in model car building.

Maybe I'm being dumb regarding the decanting ...... and not sure if you were rejecting the use of a "straw" or not ...... but I use a lot of WD-40 for many purposes. Spray cans of WD-40 come with small diameter red straws that fit into the spray nozzle, so users can direct the spray into tight areas without the liquid getting everywhere you may not want it. Would that red "straw" from WD-40 fit the nozzle of the Revell chrome spray nozzle, to make decanting less messy? (I think "Lock-Eze" brand lubricant spray cans might also have straws, for directing spray into lock cylinders)
@FranksModelWorks
@FranksModelWorks 5 ай бұрын
The diameter of the cylinder that houses the nozzle hole is too big for that straw. My second attempt (the one filmed and in the video) was less messy, but still not very productive. There is a way to gas out the propellant using what looks like a vice, a hole punch and an industrial can opener, but that’s adding more expense to decant a can of paint that already costs $30. And that’s with the provision that it works on the first try, and you don’t have the can explode all over the place (which WILL happen to me, guaranteed). It doesn’t make sense for me financially to keep trying to decant it for one potential use for it, which might not work anyway because the heart of the issue may be compatibility and not delivery method. I’m going to do it (probably today), to test if it’s a compatibility issue or a delivery issue, but it will likely be the last time I do it…regardless of the outcome. The expense doesn’t warrant it.

The only benefit I could see to decanting it would be to reduce waste due to overspray, but you waste so much trying to decant it that you at best break even, and likely not even that. I'll stick to the blood tests until I have to go. I've had one alien abduction (colonoscopy) Not a fan. Great video.

@FranksModelWorks
@FranksModelWorks 4 ай бұрын
Molotow looks good, but takes a long time to dry (that’s if it ever dries). Molotow is ink, and hasn’t been used in our hobby for an especially long time so there isn’t data on longevity. Molotow is minimally resilient and doesn’t withstand handling. Revell looks better, and has the versatility to look like real metal that has been chrome plated, or as kit chrome (if that’s the desired final result), depending on preparation. It is also the most resilient and handleable coating product I have tested, and I have tested pretty much all of them.

The only way I would consider decanting the Revell Chrome, is to use the drill a hole in the very top of the can close to the nozzle, let it de-gas, then pour it into a bottle. The only reason I would consider doing so, is yes, the Revell spray is expensive, and by decanting it that way, you can use less of it per session, thereby making the can last longer. Would you be will to try that method of decanting as a test to see if it works?
