Emily Henrys writing definitely evolved from Book Lovers to Happy Place. The writing in Happy Place is phenomenal, it's so gorgeous and you step right into the book with how beautifully descriptive it is. I haven't read Funny Story, but Happy Place has the best, most descriptive and really fun locations that allow for perfect scenes. I think this book has the most developed characters from any of her other books, as well as including queer and non white main characters! Its a really great summer vacation romance that has a large element of found family. All of the difference settings and activities that the characters were involved in were super fun! My copy is covered in annotations from all the times I have reread it since it came out!!

Thank you for the breakdown! Loving the sweatshirts. But for some context, you may want to look up the definition for “gothic” in terms of literature. Might help to make the connection a bit since it’s likely a reference to the irony of common themes creating a specific atmosphere, one in which outsiders may view as dystopian or ripe with potential for darkness (like what is hinted at in Beach Read and Happy Place)

Subscribed! I will clear up this mentioning of Gothic for the Midwest: there's a very famous painting called American Gothic- look it up, you will have seen it before. It depicts two Midwest farmers from Iowa, and it predates the gothic subgenre/music scene. Only problem is whoever made that website was hoping people would remember the painting instead of the subgenre/music scene. By the way you are hilarious and I need more videos from you

I’m going to assume that Midwest Gothic is a take on the literary genre Southern Gothic which is basically what Faulkner wrote. The term Gothic comes from the British or European genre from the 18th century which was where supernatural and dark themes are explored in the early novel. Southern Gothic took those themes and focused into a type of regionalism which was highly popular in early American literature. It’s not the same as the music genre or aesthetic.
