A Week in the Life of a Medieval Chateau: Wednesday (In Which Marc Leaves Home)

The Chronicles of Chateau de Rosieres

The Chronicles of Chateau de Rosieres

Күн бұрын

For just one week, we will be filming, editing and posting a vlog a day to show you what it is we get up to in a normal week at the medieval Chateau de Rosieres - our beast of a French castle and estate. From the remarkable to the mundane, follow the passage of our week exactly as it unfolds.
Thank you for your patience everybody. Our computer has crashed no fewer than six times in the past 24hrs, losing huge amounts of work and meaning that we are now a whole day behind in our uploading. Huge apologies! We are keeping up with the filming though and we have a couple of wonderfully varied days coming up, including more animal rescues, furniture rescues, and of course more puns from Marc.
It's Wednesday and the chateau residents are apart for once. Marc has gone to the big smoke to pick up our auction purchases from yesterday and try to snag some more bargains at a live auction today. Amy and Ignat stay at home with Clement, who seems determined to get up and about for the first time. There's another animal rescue on the cards, and Amy shows her impossibly grand plans for the en suite of the Master Bedroom.
***
If you enjoy this week's vlogs (normal service will resume next week), do consider becoming a member of our Patreon community. We post three to four mini videos a week in this more in-depth, diary style: Sneak peaks, in-depth explorations of our projects, exclusive tours and little slices of our everyday life in this extraordinary chateau.
/ chateaurosieres
All proceeds from our Patreon will go to an Association (non-profit Society) dedicated to running and restoring the areas of the chateau and estate that are open to the public in some form. The Association also supports community and educational activities designed to put the chateau and estate at the heart of village life.

Oh my goodness, Amy, there are only two possibilites concerning your tile mural: 1. You have a lot of latent artistic ability you never tapped into before now 2. You are the most inspired and hardworking do it yourselfer I’ve ever encountered to accomplish what you have if you don’t have artistic talent. Regardless of which of the above is true, can we talk about you starting on this mural project while you are tending your toddler, a menagerie of animals and birds, your husband and a chateau! Gosh, there’re multi taskers and then there’ s YOU! And you do it all with a smile on your face and your terrific sense of humor. I am soooo impressed. Happy Easter.🤗

I am a potter and tile maker and have done some kitchens and a few bathrooms, . Ambitious project. They will need three coats of color and a coat of clear to seal. Lots of work. It's looking great, you can use a tiny detailing bottle with a syringe tip to fill in the areas directly near the lines.

Thank you so much for the walk around the back areas! As far as guarding animals, the Gold Shaw Farm channel discusses the Maremma (Maremmano-Abruzzese) dog as being particularly well suited to guarding poultry. But that farmer also has installed huge amounts of electrical fencing because he has bears, wild felines, and coyotes. If the local people let their dogs run, electric fencing might be your best long-term plan.

It's a joy to see Clement tackling his first steps ~ and he just did it spontaneously! I love it that you keep an eye on all the animals...livestock and wildlife. Maybe get a small flock of large geese, as their nature is to give loud warning warning of approaching predators in the vicinity. Your ceramic bathroom mural is just so beautiful ~ you certainly have talent!

Amy, that mural is absolutely inspired! I've been talking to my hubby about getting a kiln to try this myself as I've been wanting to do some tile work around our place. I would love, love, love it if you could do a video / tutorial on how you do it. I am so excited to see your finished product. I must say, as a novice painter myself, I understand the thought and work that goes into something like that , I think what you are achieving is really magical. So exciting!!!!!

You just have to be sure there is enough glaze coverage so the tiles don’t allow moisture to penetrate them as this could cause future mild and mildew issues on the wall they are applied to
@nancibishof6462
@nancibishof6462 3 жыл бұрын
@@joyfulthings1 As a clay artist that specializes in tiles, unless the tile can withstand at least a cone 6 firing (2137F) they will not resist moisture. High firing limits water absorption to less than 2%. Low fire clay will not vitrify and will absorb more moisture.
@joyfulthings1
@joyfulthings1 3 жыл бұрын
@@nancibishof6462 yes that’s true . It’s the same as the underside of a fired coffee mug,, not porous and they don’t leak if fired to cone requirements but they are more prone to staining and aren’t as easily cleaned as when they have glaze on them which is why I would be sure there was full coverage.
@nancibishof6462
@nancibishof6462 3 жыл бұрын
@@joyfulthings1 Again Joy, that only holds true if the clay has a low absorption of moisture and if it is fired to maturity and if the glaze has a coefficient of expansion that matches the coefficient of expansion of the glaze and the glaze coverage is good and is properly fired. You can test it by weighing the dry , unglazed, fired tile and then reweighing it after a 24 hour submerged soak in water. There should only be a 1-2% difference in the tile's weight between the 2 weights.

I love that you took on a huge project without really thinking about how difficult it would be. The iris are extra special. I may have already said this. Attitude is everything. My mothers dear friend homesteaded in Alaska. The first two years they lived in a tent with a stove for heat. They had three preteens as well. They loved it in spite of her friend encountering a standing grizzly bear, when she was short cutting through the woods for a doctor, and she was unarmed. She wrote letters . You do vlogs.

I love that tile project. So pleased you’ve brought it out again. That’s the hardest part of these long-haul projects -just picking them up again. You’ll get into a rhythm again. Remember that hand painted tiles are supposed to be a little uneven. It’s part of the charm. If aiming for perfect the only way is a transfer which is not nearly as spectacular.

Amy, the peacock design for the bathroom tiles is amazing. It’ll look beautiful when it’s completed. The story behind each fabric mural and the idea and reasoning behind the painting of the tiles is just as wonderful as the objects themselves. Nothing beats a good story. I bought second hand a small, beautiful lamp shade recently from a family who had moved around the world and it now sits beautifying my place. But what makes it more beautiful is it’s history. Thank you, I enjoyed your Wednesday vlog 🐑

Marc I have been listening to you French accent in English and it just struck me that you sound like a really English person playing the part of a French man in a movie putting on what people think is a French accent then suddenly you come out with some english words spoken perfectly. There is a sort of Cluzot vibe going on. I could listen to you all day. When I arrived in France one of the things I told people was that my mother knitted all my poules ! Of course I meant pulls but the ou/eou thing escaped me. It did make people laugh like the time I told my boss I had seen a chatouille from the window of the car, which I thought was the word for a small chateau !
