It is so sad that, no matter their choice, Reptites wouldn't have survived the Ice Age... At least, not over the land. It's an irony that either we find Reptites competing on the race of the Millenial Fair (since some Reptites were found living underground in the Middle Ages) or people wearing customes that look alike. Seems like history didn't forget Azala's people in the end

For being just side villains the reptites story is actually really tragic. They're not just fighting to kill the humans but they're fighting for their own survival. As seen in one of the alternative endings if ayla was never there the reptites would have survived. But upon killing their last hope the black tyrano Azala knows that it's the end Reptites don't have a future. It's really sad stuff especially since Azala didn't want to leave in the end since she knew it was all over she wanted to die with the rest of her species. God this game is so good it makes the side characters have full blown stories I love it.

Another interesting thought occurs to me... if Lavos had never fallen to Earth, it's likely that the Reptites would have become the dominant species on a tropical Earth. The ice age was caused by the impact, and the time travelers helping Ayla to defeat the reptites were only there on that part of their journey because of what Lavos would eventually do in the future. From what we see in the prehistoric age, the Reptites seem to have superior technology _and_ physical prowess to the humans. What happened to them in the end was, in a sense, deeply unfair.

I know what you mean. In the game, I started feeling sorry for Azala and the Reptites, especially with the "At the Bottom of the Night" song playing in the background right after Azala's loss. The whole thing almost drove me to tears. Along with the part of the game being named "Unnatural Selection," I figured that this Prehistorical section after the battle with Magus was about natural selection, which doesn't always prevail. In other words, the strong do not always survive. Many times, it's the smart ones who survive. I was glad when Ayla tried to get Azala to go with them, and I wish she had. I kept wishing that both people and Reptites could coexist. Actually, this followed the real world closely. People came after dinosaurs, but unlike in the game, people and dinosaurs didn't exist at the same time.

You know, watching this more then a few times, I've come to the realization that Azala threw the fight, she shows multiple times to possess telekinetic powers strong enough to lift your party members and dangle them over the sides of the bridge before slamming them back down on top of it, there's nothing at all stopping her from just throwing you all off the bridge, and it's a very long way down, lol.

Is only my imagination or this is like, thinking the things better and the positions of the game, the black tyrano and Azala are based on Babidi and Dabura but one hundred porcent better? XD Because Azala her powers are the real deal and very annoying, and black tyrano obviously, her best servant.

I can remember first playing this on the SNES as a little kid; Azala’s pleas to Ayla and his proclamation that the Reptites had no future always hit me with a mixture of fear and sorrow. As someone else in these comments said, it sent a chill up my spine, and that was all brilliantly captured here.

I remember hearing this in the Story so Far and was blown away. I liked the original way Boss 2 was used, but here it was excellent, especially with the hints that Azala could foresee the future in some fashion (which was a theory for a long time), and I greatly appreciate that you kept the Woolsey "We... have no future" from the SNES version, a line that always makes me wince a bit.

I have a pet theory that they could have, rather easily, but Lavos felt they weren't meddlesome enough and influenced Azala, giving her advanced intellect and psychic powers, to convince her that the humans needed to die and to build the Tyranno Lair, centralizing all the reptites exactly where Lavos fell. It's the only explanation I have for the sequel's dragon civilization, but it does also assume that Lavos was hiding a deep cunning behind the facade of being a simple force of destruction.

Unfortunately, that won't work for a basic reason. Reptites, even if they are more similar to hairless apes due to convergent evolution, are likely ectothermic. Their biology probably wouldn't let them survive the aeons of winter to follow, even with technological aid.

@@ZacSunTiBidea While that's an interesting idea, both this scene and the sequel pretty much indicate Lavos didn't arrive or have any impact until this scene. That's why this chapter is called Unnatural Selection. The whole point is that the Reptites were supposed to win had there been no interference and that Azala had those powers naturally due to being more "evolved" but Lavos came in on his spiky wrecking ball to upset the planet's natural order.

Lavos didn't quite wipe out all the dinosaurs, but the resulting ice age wiped out most of the rest. Chrono Trigger DS does have an optional area with some surviving Reptites.

The fact that the language they speak is the same as what modern day humans speak is a plot hole that exists so that the audience can understand them. It doesn't make sense, but if they didn't speak English, they wouldn't have any weight to their characters.
