Nicely done, thanks Marc. Just to add that bezel and bezel insert are 2 different things. So the part that has colour such as Pepsi, Batman, Coke, Rootbeer, GMT, etc. are called Bezel insert. Where bezel is the metal where the bezel insert is attached to.

good cite on the role of a rose engine - people often assume Guilloche is simply engine turning, and the technique does derive from that, but a rose engine is capable for patterns well beyond what could otherwise be accomplished by engine turning processes. Though I think that rose patterns are still sometimes applied internally to retain lubrication, as was the original intent.

Another really interesting video. Thank you. The patterns and textures that decorate watch faces are sometimes beautifully subtle, especially on the Grand Seiko with “snowflake” dial. The term “Guilloche” is a French word, like a lot of watchmaking terminology, and is pronounced “Gee-yosh”. The “L”s are silent.

I have an interesting question (might make a good watch and learn). Are the X Ray machines and magnetic walk through hoops at an airport strong enough to affect the timekeeping of mechanical watches? If so, are the ways to prevent or reduce the magnetic affects?

hey can you make a video testing out if solar watches are charged faster with an LED light or a black light, I can't test it out myself because I don't have a solar with a visible power reserve but I think it might work because when you use a blacklight on lume instead of an LED it takes two seconds to fully charge the lume as opposed to an led that would take about 10 seconds. I know they aren't the same thing but I would like to know if it does work. Thank you.

Great video although you could probably rename it to more broadly describe all the things you covered. "Wristwatch terminology", "parts of a watch", "complications" or something more easily searched for by people new to watches. Agree with the other commenters that that Sinn is a next level watch. Thanks for the video!

It's actually quite interesting - UTC then approximates Universal time (specificlly, UT1), which has various types, depending what factors they account for (e.g. Tidal Friction, and glaciation). Ultimately, it turns out, we only know the true length of a day (i.e. one revolution of the Earth's axis) by measuring it against stars - and even then, there is a margin for error.

So, Marc: Essentially if a watch has a bi-directional bezel then it can’t be a diver and most likely a pilot watch, correct?
@erze2367
@erze2367 6 жыл бұрын
Eye Heart Sushi: Essentially, yes. There are however various implementations of a diving bezel, the most common being a unidirectional outer bezel that can only be turned in one direction, such as on most Seiko divers. Then there are special implementations such as a bidirectional locking bezel that you would find e.g. on a Squale 2002 which has to be pushed down first and then can be turned in both directions, and when it is released it locks into place and cannot be turned either way. Then there is the bidirectional inner bezel that e.g. the Longines Legend Diver has which is operated via a separate screw-down crown.
@islandwatch
@islandwatch 6 жыл бұрын
If it's a slider, I don't think it's a good diver. I guess if life depends on it, why risk it? But I also do not think many true divers trust their lives to these.

@@eyeheartsushi2212 Most, if not all modern divers use an Electronic quartz dive computer now, but some of us careful ones will still wear a Backup automatic or quartz diver model watch with a unidirectional (one-way) bezel... I'm reasonably sure that almost all self-respecting Divers own at least one " official Dive watch" to wear at least once in a while, whether snorkeling , rec diving or just hanging around near water. Marc sells dozens of different makes and grades of Official Dive certified watches, and dozens more that are at least serious swimming and snorkeing rated for extraordinarily good prices. Some are downright affordable...almost steals.

The watch industry is...... confusing to say the least. In professional sports, like 20-30 years ago there were Chronometers and those are like the current chronographs, but with two seconds hands (blue and red). They used them for example in athletics to time laps or runs. Nowdays, the chronometer somehow became chronograph and chronometer is just s term for well regulated watch.....
