Long Island Watch

Күн бұрын

In today's episode of Watch and Learn, we will tackle how to use the dive watch bezel. Dive watches are probably the most popular style of watch on the market today, and they all use some sort of turning bezel with minute graduations on it. But how do you use it? Or how does a diver use it?
We're going to show you how to use the bezel in a few different ways, and also show you how the uni-directional bezel is a major safety feature on the watch. We will use many examples from both Orient and Seiko.

"And I'm wearing my father's Datejust." What a proud moment. To wear your father's watch is something very special in my opinion. My father, however, doesn't own a Rolex or even a Swiss watch, although he has a 70's Seiko 5, which he promised to give me one day. I will be wearing the hell out of that watch. As always, great video!

Something like a G-Shock makes a good backup I think. I need to concentrate on what I'm doing, not on turning a bezel. A good watch is a backup to a dive computer it's not the primary tool. These watches are very cool and would love to own one or two, but probably would never dive with one.

The way I learned is if you are diving for 40 minutes, you subtract that from 60 and get 20, set the bezel to the 20 mark at the minute hand, that way when you hit the pointer time is up, that is why it is the only thing on the bezel that is lumed, so you can se it and the minute hand in the dim light
@raysbagels
@raysbagels 5 жыл бұрын
Exactly correct! And on the Rolex and others that have only 15 minute markers, on a decompression dive, once your bottom time has reached zero, you now can count the minutes of decompressing. I haven't dived in a long time, but back in the day we didn't have dive computers and we were absolutely dependent on a good watch with a bezel. On the other hand, MOST recreational divers are diving on relatively shallow reefs and bottom time is totally irrelevant as they'll never get close to the need for decompression.

There's no reason to use a dive watch for diving. Dive computers are way better and cheaper than a good dive watch. There are some decent ones for $200, and then you can always go up to ones in the 700 dollar range for the super good ones. Where as a dive watch you would pay tons of money, still have the chance of getting water inside of it, and the only thing it can do is tell you the time you've been down there. You can use a dive computer to save all of your dive statistics, which is important especially if you're just starting to dive because it gives you credibility and helps you get certified in different diving certifications.

As a certified diver I can tell you that no divers use this kind of watches. Eveybody uses dive computers nowdays as they do a lot more than your so-called "diver's watches". Dive computers tell you your depth, time of descent/ascent, temerature and a lot more depending on a dive computer/price/make. The other thing is I cannot even imagine relying on fluorescence itself in murky waters, all dive computers have led or kind of led backlight. "Dive watches" are nice gadgets and it's fun to own them but they have no use in modern diving, ask any amateur diver. BTW dive computers are not cheap. Respect

I’m a retired search/rescue diver at my counties sheriffs office and we never wore dive watches because we dove in mostly black water where you can’t even see your hand in front of you mask. So it got quite tricky we didn’t have to worry so much about decomposition stops due to mostly being in shallow rivers and ponds in Ohio but now you have computers that keep track of everything we finally got masks we could communicate with the topside wich made it easy!

Another great video. Thanks, Marc! Sometimes I want to use the bezel as a countdown timer, and I've learned to do it in 2 steps so I don't have to do the math. Say I want a 12-minute countdown: 1) Align bezel's 0 to current minute hand position. Find which dial minute marker matches the bezel's 12-minute marker. 2) Rotate bezel's 0 to the above mentioned dial minute marker. Now the bezel's 0 is a perfect 12-minute countdown.

As a cnc machinist I use the bezel to time cycle times. I also use the water resistance to avoid damage from coolant and other oils, then at the end of each day I clean my watch in the shower with dish soap. So for example If I know my parts going to run in the machine for 40 minutes, i can leave my area to do an inspection, run another machine, or preform secondary ops, (or hang out at the water cooler and B/s). By the way I wore that same color Orient Bravo today, it's a great watch. I also have an SXK007. Those are my two work watches.

One possible consideration for resetting the bezel is nitrogen narcosis. A lot of people confuse this with decompression sickness (ie the bends). Nitrogen Narcosis is when you can essentially become euphoric (high) from the nitrogen in the tank. It might make things easier to figure out if this happens. Bear in mind, the cure for nitrogen narcosis is to simply ascend slightly and slowly. Still I suppose this could be a good reason to use the bezel in this manner and is why it is my preference.

I enjoyed this video! I’m a former Deputy Sheriff and I was on the m.e.r.t. Team (marine emergency rescue team) for about 7 years. Most of us didn’t even wear a dive watch due to the fact that we dove mostly in black water so murky and dark that you couldn’t even see your hand right again your mask all our times were kept by the guy on the surface hold the rope that the diver held the other end of the rope before we got underwater communicating masks all our communication was conducted by rope tugs with 3 tugs it meant you found the body or item you were searching for 4 or more meant you were in trouble and a rescue diver followed the rope from the surface to help you out I could go in but my point is always learn some old school stuff for diving as equipment sometimes fails but if I were still diving in clear water I’d use one!!

As a diver, dive watches aren't actually used that much. There super cool looking and nice to have but if you are a true diver who regularly dives, you're going to want a dive computer. Dive computers are amazing. I've used them before and they are super smart, they can do everything you need. Tell you how much time you got left at your depth, how deep you are, alarms for if you go over your depth, logs that you can track old dives with, decompression timers, everything. They even have systems that if you stay too long they will plan appropriate decompression stops for you (times, depths, everything). Some things cannot be done without dive computers. If you go on a dive at multiple depths, for different times, unless you plan it out perfectly ahead of time you're going to need a dive computer. Most of this stuff can be done without a dive computer (and you should know how to), but dive computers have saved quite a few peoples bacon from their own mistakes. Some people are commenting that it is a good backup, but honestly, if your dive computer stops working you most likely want to go head up to the surface right away (with decompression stops). You won't have known how long you dive computer has been broken for, and you may have already gone too far. Dive watches are cool. I even have one myself, but if you are truly a frequent diver, you'll have a dive computer. Dive watches were probably once an important tool, but now they are more a fashion piece than anything else.

My old man was ex-navy so it is great people outside of the navy are passing on this information. Also you can use the bezel to keep track of time at home when you are overseas or on the go. It is a simple time keeper like a sundial but more advance as underwater there is no sun.

Good and Interesting video, thank you. It is more like a run through of how the bezel was used in scuba diving in the 70s and 80s. It is now obsolete, divers now primarily rely on their dive computers and it is compulsory in most dives to wear a dive computer. The dive computer basically worn like a watch, e.g. Suunto Zoop, provide a lot more information and many functions.

From a diver, the intro should mostly mention 1. At depth, you're breathing highly compressed air. Hold each breath longer if you're calm enough and... 2. Breath is used as buoyancy control in tight situations. Good divers use the amount of air in their lungs to move them up and down with little swim-energy expenditure.

Interesting. For spearfishing, on snorkel, one could perhaps set the bezel to the hour-hand and then just use it to keep track of hours spent diving, as each dive trip might typically be 1-8 hours in length. Time seems to just slip away when spearing sometimes. If diving from shore, one might want to plan a turn around time, to account for daylight/tides/parking limits/rendezvous time/competition end/etc.. Tides typically cycle every 12 hours (6 hours between high & low tides), it might sometimes be useful/necessary to keep track of when the tide will next turn ("slack water").

But I use the feature so often that when I can afford to replace the smartwatch I will probably buy an Orient instead, "diving" into mechanical watches.

As a driver I spin the bezel to align with the minute hand having my dive time planned out with old school dive tables I know I have x-mount of time so know when to end my dive but I might forget when I started it was it 8 after or 18 after the marker helps me remember when I started the dive. As a real everyday uses dive watch a Seiko is Superior as a show of Rich guys watch a Rolex it's like have a four-wheel drive truck but you never drive it off road and keep it parked in the garage during bad weather

1:17 my dad has a really similar date-just! Exactly like yours (if that's a 36mm) but with a champagne dial instead of the tapestry dial👌🏼my mom has a matching one. I wish I was that classy lol I'll stick to my divers, for now😂

I use my bezel daily timing stuff. Been using dive computers the past decade but I always wear a watch as a backup. The watch is gonna work no mater. I had a friend who was with me and his computer went out. He forgot to put new batteries in it so I let him use mine for the rest of the dive since I had my dive watch on. I was the only one with one out of 3. Now he always wears one for backup.

Nice video Mark! I bought my first "diver" in 1969 when I direct ordered a Ollech & Wajs from Switzerland but I really never knew how to use the bezel. I have used mine for parking meters. I also have a habit of timing the run cycle on my central AC system in the summer to tell me how it's cooling (sort of). Now I will appreciate my Orange Monster bezel more. By the way, I still own my O & W diver and it runs pretty well but the base metal case is very corroded.

You're the only youtube watch educator that wears a watch on BOTH wrists. I enjoy your wrist-checks! Me: Apple Watch Series 3 Cellular (left wrist), and Garmin Forerunner 935. Apple watch provides 'Guided Run' coaches via the Nike Run Club app (bluetooth headphones required), Garmin's software gives me plenty of running (and other) metrics. Happy Horology :)

guys, i need help. i'm a marine and get roughed up a lot and shoot a lot. shooting causes really sharp shocks to the watch. i've broken 2 g-shocks so far. are there any sub $100 automatic or analog watches you'd recommend that are supremely durable? even if they aren't more durable than the g-shock, what's the most durable watch i can get for that money? i really appreciate any insight. i know next to nothing about watches. trying to get into it. but i'm poor... hahaha.

The last method is correct or more safe because of the illuminating on the bezel is on the arrow, so if you have low to no visibility or torch dies about, you can still se when your time is up because of the illuminating dial against the arrow on the bezel. When diving that is

One update related to technology......the new dive computers (either integrated - hose connection or remote transmitter) will track your air usage (cuft) and your pressure every few seconds. They calculate how much air you have left and how much time you have remaining at that depth and time left to get to the surface with a 3 min safety stop. HOWEVER, you should always dive with a watch with the bezel and or timer. Once you hit the water you start the timer or move the bezel to zero just as you noted. A good diver knows his typical air consumption rate (SAC) and how much time at depth they can have. This is your back up in case of computer / gauge failure.

And then there's using the bezel for keeping track of a second time zone, good to know considering that most people don't use their dive watches for diving.

I use mine all the time when cooking. Tracking when I parked. When I begin my workout. When I start talking with someone who overtalks. It's very easy and very visual. I prefer it to a digital timer for things that are not exact. Also you can mark a hour like six thirty. But you have to remember it's hours not minutes.
