The first hemi was Chrysler 331 in 1951 and 180hp. DeSoto was 52 and dodge 53 with the 241. Having torque converter oil and engine oil was dodge only and a bad idea cause sludge in converter and stopped it by 55. In small towns people would only drive blocks to work and all engines had lots of sludge in them because they didn't get warmed up. Every mechanic had a large serving spoon in his tool box and the first thing before overhaul was to spoon out all the sludge from the heads and valve galleys. Pennzoil and Quaker state were worst cause they were full of wax.

Severely waxy oil, yes. I also think those road draft tubes would suck road dirt under closed throttle deceleration. Remember all those dirt roads?

My favorite early Hemi is the 291 Desoto. Wait, I have to turn the record over to the B side!! let me get the filmstrip projector back in sync! Hopefully the bulb will not blow. Oh yea, My second favorite is the 354 with a 392 crank. And you thought putting 440 cranks in a 383 was a new thing??

Classic Mopar film!!! Now, Pertronics has an electronic ignition kit that will replace these troublesome ignition points, and everything will stay inside the OEM distributor housing! And using one of their OEM look-alike 3Ω 'Flamethrower' ignition coils, and older engines like these will run smooth throughout the entire range of rpm's the engine operates at... And the Pertronics system operates off of 12.0 to 14.7volts, so the OEM ballast resistor is no longer used... Less to go wrong!!! Poor Tech (the puppet) was taken to the rifle range before he got home to get sleep, but he's sleeping now- alongside several other struck targets... 😮

NO-- The Chrysler New Yorker came out with it in 1951 @ 331 ci. My friends father had one; he worked at Chrysler in Compton/ELA.

@@MrGGPRI actually, engines with HEMISPHERICAL combustion chambers were in several aircraft before these engines were put into affordable cars... But what Chrysler did do first, was put this technology into the reach of many consumers...

The trans also used the engine oil .really horrible system .It was type of fluid coupler with a clutch

Torque converter used engine oil ?
@68FISH Жыл бұрын
Yes, some of them did. I have an old chrysler spacer plate with multiple oil passages that shared engine oil with the tranny. Its how we ran bulldozers and tanks for years. Didn't work well for the automotive applications.

You do realize that a number of car engines came with hemispherical combustion chambers long before and long after the Chrysler Hemi appeared, right? 1905 was the first. Chrysler trademarked the name "Hemi" but there is no law against anyone producing a hemi head engine design.
Hard to easily get the info. I believe octane ratings after the war were too low for high compression. During the fifties octane and compression rose hand in hand. Sorta chicken and the egg. One site claims regular in 1946 was only 79! Knock in a pre electronic high com engine would be severe.

Phillip's fuel made the founder's car go 60mph, no, said his chauffeur, 66! You might be correct with Union Oil.
