1:34 The higher compression ratio is not the biggest reason that OHV engines outperform flatheads. The biggest reason is that incoming air and outgoing exhaust doesn't have to make as many turns when entering the engine. The other reason is that the combustion chamber burns the fuel more efficiently. The combustion chamber works so much better, that compression can be raised without raising the fuel octane. 10:34 Sometimes when people race old engines, they will pull spark plugs and take a very close examination of them. Even after a few miles of racing, spark plug appearance can show a trained eye whether an engine is dialed in or something needs adjustment. I'm not familiar with that process since I don't race things, and I don't modify for big horsepower gains.
