Thank you so much for posting this video! I am a 59 year old somewhat disabled woman with next to no money and I have this exact problem. I have spent the last hour searching for a solution on line and came across your video which made the fix look almost as though I could do it myself - almost - if I have the right tools. The only tool I do not have is the one for removing the rivet. However, I am going to check for the price of the part and find out if some kind fellow will help me do this. All because you took the time to to film the repair & post it! What a great guy you are!. God bless you and yours richly! Shelley in southern Saskatchewan, Canada

You guys are pretty awesome. Your videos have saved me countless hours of frustration and my sanity. My wife insisted on a used 2007 T&C even though they are notorious for AC and wiring issues. I voted Honda Odyssey, she said we'd get more van for our money. Lol....In the ONE year we've had it I've completely rewired both sliding passenger doors and fixed the rear AC. Now there is no air blowing out of the front vents. The rear vents are fine, however the front vents don't move air at all. When at highway speed you can feel cool air coming out of them slightly,but not enough to make any difference. We live in Mobile, Alabama, so we know HOT!!!! Now that I've watched this video I'll be sure to check out the relay. I'm pretty sure that's the problem, however since I don't have a super-sweet rivet gun (just Glock, Sig Sauer and Walther PPQ's) I'm concerned about how to fasten the relay. I know you discussed it in this video but I couldn't hear it that well. Is it possible that you could respond to my question on how to attach the fan relay without a rivet tool? Thank you, and God knows you have plenty of job security servicing Dodge vans. Too bad they can't seem to understand that sales will increase when they stop selling vehicles that fall apart in 4 years! Honda seems to understand that concept quite well!

Just a word of CAUTION, when probing control wires do not use this method on most/all vehicles! use a Digital voltmeter or a computer safe circuit tester. Eric O is a trained professional and knows where and what to probe with his scope on a rope (test light). When Eric was probing the control wire at 6:30 and heard the vehicle chime it sure got his attention quick.

Love seeing the "scope-on-a-rope" master in action! Pretty cool how you checked the low-amp control circuit with a test light too. I would back that up with a quick relay bypass test with a jumper wire and measure the fan current draw just for kicks :) And the good old "time constraint" excuse to not use a real scope...don't pick up bad habits now Eric haha!

This is an important comment cause an old fan can draw too much power and cause premature failure of the relay. This test should be shown. But what is a reasonable fan draw current/

I own 2 of the 2001 through 2007 generation vans. They are very service friendly. I do most of the repairs myself. Rear plugs and upper O2 sensor are not hard you just pull the wiper tray off which is simpler than you think. The radiators come out easier than the generation before it. The heater core can be swapped out if necessary without the dashboard being removed. Brakes, suspension, window motors, and power lock actuators are all very easily done. I do work on other peoples vans because they are not difficult for me to do so. The one downfall is that if you do not have the lower body cladding on the vans which is a premium option they rust quicker. Proper washing and waxing of the van would avoid this, but not to many owners care about them enough to do it as often as it should be done.

also a good idea to check the amp draw on the fans. as the fans age the amp draw gets higher and burns up the relay and sometimes even the wiring. have seen several of these come back due to fans being the root of the problem. happens alot on the jeep grand cherokee with same set up. just some food for thought.

Oh no it is no big deal I was just curious. I think 8 or 9 amps is pretty low to be honest with ya. Blower motors in dash draw more than that usually. I guess my thought is , is if you have nothing to compare it to then in my mind it is just a number. It may be a good idea to gather that data and jot it down to start to find a "norm" though? Matter of fact I may just start doing that :)

What's great about this is that you test your wires also to the PCM, so you can rule them out as being bad using this method. If this works, and your relay doesn't, then you know the harness connector isn't connecting or the relay is bad.
@davestorm6718 Жыл бұрын
I ended up hot wiring the fan to a switch in the dash, just can't forget to turn it off (lol). Good fan, good relay, good wiring, bad PCM (not worth dropping a fortune on a new one as they're worth so little money anymore). Next failure will be the transmission *about 1 per 100K miles. Chrysler has never figured out how to make a transmission.

IAT clicks when fuse is reinserted and sometimes radiator runs briefly simultaneously then quits within seconds. Antitheft light doesnt come on , never. Not with key in start position, not when arming alarm with fob or key. New batteries in fob, tried 2 different keys. Tried charging batteries, tried different battery , tried jumping . All fuses good, all fuse hot legs above 12 volt except IOD. ASD clicks with key in run position. Fuel pump runs a few secs when key in run position. Lights will blink mysteriously sometimes. For the EGR here we reprogram the ECU and turn off the EGR, completely delete the map for it and block the passage on the intake with some kind of a shim instead of the regular gasket. After doing that you will never have EGR problems and you wont dump junk into your intake and engine.

Another fine video. Eric I have the 07 T&C. I followed your instructions. The fans work. The control side of the relay does not. Using my VOM meter with the red lead on the positive battery I have 14.3 volts on the ground. On the signal terminal with the red lead still on batt. positive I read 13.7 volts dc? What is the actual voltage supposed to be? My experience with appliance relay's is for the load coil that operates the contact you have common on one side Ground,and voltage on the other side. What actual voltage reading should be on the signal terminal. Also we should be able to read ohms on the coil. to tell if it is open or good closed with resistance. I read in K ohms on the old one and the new.. 507.6 ohms on old, and 608.1 on the new. What ohms reading should it be?. I read M ohms on old relay at 3.033, and 4.277 on the new. Does this seem right? I have watched your video's for several years now. Always good stuff. Ken in Michigan

South Main Auto Repair I guess that's how I am now. I'm younger than you, but it does always seem like my truck is breaking down. I've done so much to it too, whereas this van is nearly bone stock. Plastic and rubber components have been replaced, but it's got over 200k on it and the transmission and engine haven't been touched. Both of those have been replaced in my truck with a little bit more mileage. Isn't it a little hard to work on your own cars when you do it for a living all the time? That would drive me nuts. It would be like working after you got done working all day. That's really why I will never do it for a living, even though I do have fun with it.

Well my Colling fan on my 2012 t&c will not come on unless the AC is on. It was giving me a Low Fan Circuit Low code before but I unplugged the cooling fan resistor and adjusted the gap on the connector pins and now the fan comes on only when the temperature gauge is to about a quarter but then when it gets to 204f the coolant reservoir starts bubbling and it starts to overheat and the fan never does come on again I'm guessing it's gonna be the computer. I have a snap on versus and so I'm able to turn on the low and high fan with it but what's weird is that if I turn on the fan through the TIMP module, both low and high speed work the way they should, but when I command the Low Speed/Cooling Fan Relay#1 on, the high speed fan comes on. So that's why I'm assuming it's a bad computer. Does anybody have this issue?

2004 Grand Caravan. My AC stopped blowing cool. Radiators fans not turning on. Would replacing this relay allow cold air ? I hear compressor turning on. Isn’t overheating unless I’m in city. I do see some overflow. But temperature is good.

Do I remember you replacing a Radiator because someone had fitted a new relay and left it flapping in the wind? 10 Years of SMA, where did that go

Hi Thank you for getting me on the right track! 2014 caravan. Running hot in idle traffic only, gauge goes to 3/4 high. Then still in traffic the gauge drops to half, and I start traveling again and the gauge goes back to just below 1/2. I just had the thermostat replaced, didnt fix it! QUESTION PLEASE! It seems my fan doesnt come on until the engine gauge is 3/4 up. Then the fan kicks on and the temp gauge goes to half then just below half. WHat do you think?

That relay/module are a common failure. As a parts guy, I've delivered and sold many of those relays/modules.

+Frank Gonzalez Do you think they get tested or just swapped out on guesses?

+South Main Auto Repair Most shops that I serve do a proper diagnosis but a few do shotgun diagnosis. I interact with my shops and know which shops do shotgun diagnosis by the large amount of unused parts that are returned from them. The shops that do proper diagnosis don't have such a high unused return rate. As for counter customers, it's difficult to say because I sold them the part but wasn't there when (if) they returned the part. When asked by a customer for a shop that is reputable, I recommend shops that do a proper diagnosis and not just parts swaps.

Wish you had a video on the 3rd generation caravan fan circuit. Mine is a 1999 and the constant fan problems has damaged my engine . Despite replacing the three control boxes involved twice.

Mine's going to the junk yard. Never again will I buy a Chrysler anything (nor a Ford anything). They've been making garbage for 50 years, neither have figured out how to design a transmission, either.

I have problem with cooling fan on drive side not working. After checking power from wires all of them have power. Changed new relay and it is still not working either. Do you think that fan is bad. but it came two fans together. If I replace it, I have to replace the whole set ( 2 fans). Can you recommend me? No overheat. Thanks.

when checking the pwm signal for the control side of the relay weren't you checking the 'off' time off the signal rather than the 'on' as the test light was connected to battery positive and the other pin had a constant ground. would the test work by connecting the test light to battery negative and look at the 'on' time of the signal? great vid as always
@SouthMainAuto8 жыл бұрын
+matt Nope. This is a ground side switched like I mentioned in the video. Kinda the opposite of what you would think. The control side of this relay has a ground and a ground side switch PWM.

I don't get 12v on the Orange wire to ground. I tried a jumper between the Orange and Blue with no luck. If I connect from the battery to the Blue wire the Fans come on. Could you give me a tip where to trouble shoot next. I am temped to get a switch and manually turn on the fans but would like to see what else could be the problem. Thank you
