Uncommon chubby checker swingin' twist. I took out the movie sound, and put the quality audio track in. Buddy Savitt on the sax solo. Three other saxes gave it that fat sound. After all these years, I'm starting to realize the value of Buddy Savitt's instructions on sax. I was one of his students in the 60's and I still using his figures daily when I practice. He was a great teacher and musician.

Has any of you guys ever tried dancing The Twist like Chubby does? It isn't easy you know. We tend to do it our own style, but look carefully at the way Chubby Checker dances the Twist. He sorts of grabbing something from his left with both hands, dragging it across in front of him, and throwing it to his right, and does it again and again. Meanwhile his legs are turning and twisting away non-stop. He does all these with a smile on his face and enjoying himself. . . crazy, eh !!

Hey Onthegoldenline, Buddy Savitt was my uncle. I was fortunate to see him play many times in the 70's. He was truly a great sax player... with a very interesting story. Thanks for the kind words. Steve

Buddy Savitt is also one of the greatest rock'n'roll saxists. Dig 'Dinner with Drac' by John Zacherle and see what I mean. he also played the great solo on Frankie Avalon's 'Dede Dinah' and Charlie Gracie's 'Crazy Girl'. He was in the Cameo-Parkway/Chancellor session band and never laid down a bad solo.

How did the Twist come about?? Chubby says:. . after having a shower he began to dry himself with a towel when his transistor radio come on with a fast dance music. So naturally, good ol' Checker just couldn't resist it and began dancing and drying his butt to the lovely tune and The Twist was born there and then !!

Regarding the origin of The Twist, Hank Ballard was inspired to write the song in 1958 while watching kids dance at dates featuring his group, The Midnighters. Hank & the Midnighters recorded the songs and released it in 1959 as the flip side of "Teardrops on Your Letter" (King 5171). When that B side began to also take off, Hank and the band were booked to appear on "American Bandstand" but failed to show up. Host Dick Clark liked to song enough, though, to suggest that a better version might be cut by someone else -- and so the song was given to Chubby Checker. Dick had been impressed by Chubby's first record, "The Class," on which Chubby performed imitations of everyone from Fats Domino to The Chipmunks. (Dick liked it so much that he included copies with all the Christmas cards he sent out in 1959.) As everyone knows, Chubby's 1960 version of "The Twist" swiftly became what it remains today -- one of the largest-selling rock 'n' roll records ever made by anymore and the only rock record ever to reach #1, completely fall off the charts and then come back and hit #1 a second time. He became the 12th biggest hitmaker of the 1960s and, between 1959 and 1988, racked up no less than 38 chart hits -- from "Pony Time" and "Limbo Rock" to "Dancin' Party" and the Grammy-winning "Let's Twist Again." And wouldn't you know it -- like The Moody Blues and countless other important rock icons, Chubby's STILL not in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.
