My grandmother bought the record for me when it came out. I was about 6 years old. The first verse talks about a bell on a string, so I pretended I was yanking on a bell on a string while singing along with the song. She laughed and laughed. It wasn't until several years later that I realized the other meaning, lol. So glad to see y'all enjoying it and for the memories it brings back for me. Thank you.

in the 70s, when the weather was bad... kids would bring in records and we could play them at recess. I remember kids would bring in some of the comedy ones that were their parents. Remember kids bringing in Led Zeppelin. Anyway this one was brought in and it was banned lol, so was The Streak, there was one called Ahab the Arab and they didn't ban that. Guitarzan... they are coming to take me away. There were so man I can't remember them all.

She'd sing and laugh, sing and laugh, while hanging laundry on the line, cooking, just whatever she was doing. We'd hide just to hear her. We are all 5 ft 10 and taller. She was only 5 ft 2. I didn’t realize this was a real song for a long time. One episode of The Simpsons back in the 90s involved a random kid singing this song at the Springfield Elementary talent show, only to be quickly ushered off stage by Principal Skinner. I introduced this song to my 17-year-old cousin a while back while I had a lull in my work (from home). About 2/3 of the way through, I got a random work call. I told my cousin, “Sorry, but I gotta pause this. I can’t have ‘My Ding-A-Ling’ going on the TV during a work call.”

Just FYI, Jamal, because I know that you've reacted to several Elvis Presley songs. "My Ding-a-ling" was the song that kept Elvis' last really great rock song "Burning Love" from hitting the #1 spot on Billboard. "Burning Love" only reach #2 on Billboard because "My ding-a-ling" was such a huge hit, held on to the #1 spot and wouldn't let go. You can actually find video of the royal family at the time singing "My ding-a-ling". It was that big.

This song was written and recorded by Dave Bartholemew in 1952 so it was already 20 years old by the time of this performance. It became the biggest hit of Chuck Berry's career -- the man who was rock 'n' roll's single greatest lyricist until Bob Dylan came along, yet his biggest hit was a novelty record. Funny how things turn out. Berry is pretty funny here though. I saw him live back in 1988 and he was friggin' amazing, his guitar tone was absolutely filthy and he rocked out like nobody's business. He would've been 62 years old then.

The best audience's where the artist invites the audience to participate in their songs. Another famous one on a more serious level of would-be Peter Paul and Mary, Puff the Magic Dragon, audience participation top notch also.
