In small-town Preston, Idaho, awkward teen Napoleon Dynamite has trouble fitting in. After his grandmother is injured in an accident, his life is made even worse when his strangely nostalgic uncle, Rico, shows up to keep an eye on him. With no safe haven at home or school, Napoleon befriends the new kid, Pedro, a morose Hispanic boy who speaks little English. Together, the two launch a campaign to run for class president.

Remember that part about the Rex-Kwan Do guy saying they needed a backup, no more flying solo? Napoleon kinda took that to heart when he asked Pedro since they were friends now if he would have his back. Well, at the end of the movie, Napoleon had Pedro's back when he had to dance on stage in front of everyone, not knowing what the reaction would be. Napoleon backed-up his buddy all the way and got him elected.

@@norwegianblue2017 Yeah, what I've found is that our general conception of a particular decade really comes from about half way through said decade. Because the first half of any decade is still influenced from the preceding decade. So that would align with what you were saying. Sorry, I hope I explained that well enough. Many times I've seen a show or movie on tv and assumed it was from the 80's but it was actually early 90's. Just an example. P.S. I absolutely envy you! I was born '92. What I would give to have experienced the 70's and 80's! I watched a film called Over the Edge with a very young Matt Dillon from 1979 the other day. Apparently that film is a very accurate depiction of that time. If you're ever feeling nostalgic, give it a watch.

So glad you guys enjoyed this one! I went to a screening of this movie a few months ago that Jon Heder (Napoleon), Efrain Ramirez (Pedro) and Jon Gries (Uncle Rico) were at. They stayed after the movie and did a bunch of fun stuff like trivia and then answered audience questions. They seemed like super nice guys. Fun facts I learned: -Jon Heder didn’t fake any of the “stunts”. Getting hit in the face by the steak, getting choked out and slammed into the lockers by the bully (who was actually the real life high school bully of the director’s brother), and even having his crotch absolutely destroyed by that bike (he was wearing a cup) were all essentially real because they had such a small budget and everything had to be done practically and with not a lot of thought toward safety. -Lyle, the farmer with the hard to understand speech, was actually kicked in the head by a horse AND struck by lightning leading to his speech impairments. Also, none of his dialogue was scripted. The director just told him to talk and that’s what they got. -The thing I was most surprised to find out was that Napoleon’s dance moves were completely improvised by Jon Heder. I thought he legit had a dance coach, but he said that the director and he were friends and he knew that Jon was just a really good dancer.

So many of these phrases went hard in high school back then, this low budget movie had us in a chokehold hold. I remember rocking the “Vote for Pedro” shirt 😭

Prior to 1977 there was a union agreement that put the credits on the front of the movie so everyone could get their due. Lucas actually broke that when he wanted to open Star Wars with its iconic opening scroll.

Years ago walmart sold "vote for pedro" . Tshirts. I bought one, the first time i wore it out the entire bar cheered when i walked in. My boyfriend at the time thought that they were cheering for me. 😂 i let him think that.

In many ways , Napoleon dynamite, changed my life for the better. I used to get bullied in school. They called me Doop doops because I accidentally s*** my pants in home room. After I saw this film, I knew I could be better, could achieve more . I was set on fire in a prom prank but instead of being angry , I thought about what napoleon would do? So I danced . These are the films that challenge us. These are the moments of time that mean something .

Ya know it’s pretty hilarious I never before now really made the connection in my head but I totally understand Pedro shaving his head now. It gets so hot sometimes and even though I’ve had a shaved head most of my life the past couple of years I’ve been letting my hair grow out some to save money on haircuts. Anyway one day I was just wayyyyyy too hot and I was trying all the usual stuff to cool down like drinking water laying in front a fan putting ice pack on my head and finally I realized fuck this I have way too much hair on my head and went to get it cut right away. Felt so much better afterwards. Moral of the story is don’t ever underestimate how much you can cool down with less hair on your head.

They got some pretty decent actors for being such a small budget film by college students. Jon Gries (Uncle Rico) has been around forever. Tina Majorino had already been in pretty big movies and the Rex Kwon Do guy is Diedrich Bader who's been in a lot of things and been around for quite awhile. There's also Haylie Duff, Hillary Duff's sister. I'd like to know how they managed to get all these people to do it. $400k budget and it made $46.1 million. That's a massive success.

I grew up 10 min south of Preston and my cousin is the bus driver in the film. That cow incident actually happened. I think Lyle was the guy who did it.

This has always been one of my favorites. It's so comfy and being from a small town in Washington but having spent a lot of time in Idaho it's very nostalgic. For better or worse, Idaho is really like this 🤣

So this is filmed and based on my Mom’s home town (Preston Idaho). Her high school locker is in the movie, which is my only claim to fame in life. Let me tell you… this movie is 100% accurate. It got everything about Preston right. I remember all my cousins that lived there hating the movie and me subsequently calling them out for only hating it because it was so accurate haha. One cousin said the projector broke like 20 minutes in when she went to see it haha. I took my GF to visit and show her around earlier this year and took her by Napoleon’s house and high school and everything. It was so funny seeing her reaction. I was just sad because I couldn’t find Uncle Ricco’s van this trip. When they get the shakes in the movie, that’s at a place called Big Jay’s. Perhaps it’s just the nostalgia, but it’s my favorite burger place and literally the main reason I took my GF to visit.

7:55 is a result of 4:34, which explains all the steaks through the rest of the movie. also, I lived in a trailer park on the side of a mountain, next to a cow farm, and our bus stop was next to the fence line. So again, small town stuff, totally accurate.

At first I thought it took place in the 80s, but then i realized it takes place in a small town where the average home has tech and fashion about 20 years back. So I the movie takes place in 2004/2005. I can relate to this because in the small town I grew up in it was very similar. I got a lot of hand-me-downs from relatives so I looked like i was from another time period, as did a lot of other people I knew.
