Chuck Berry was the guy who the Beatles and Rolling Stones had in common and both groups loved what he did. Chuck was way ahead of his time as a lyricist and was such a great guitarist.

@redfox7490 You know, it's pretty petty to only see the bad in someone when they make a few mistakes, and overlook all the great things they did in their life entirely. We're all human beings, and we make mistakes. Stop being so vindictive and shunning people constantly, when, I guarantee you've done something just as bad, or maybe even worse at some point in your life. You may actually find joy one day if you can just learn to forgive.

@@huntergreen1767 Berry also stole songs from pianist Johnnie Johnson. You don't think that Berry wrote all of those songs by himself do you? Johnson was going to sue but time ran out. Listen to numerous songs and you'll notice that they are NOT guitar songs but piano songs - for example, "Roll Over Beethoven".

@@Brother_Dre1900 You need to hear the hundreds of rock n roll and rockabilly songs from the 1950's. Berry was mainly rockabilly and he really wasn't special and he outright stole songs from black pianist Johnnie Johnson. Johnson sued but eventually the Statute of Limitations took effect and the lawsuit had to be dropped. For example, does "Roll Over Beethoven" sound like a piano song or a guitar song? I play guitar and to me both "Roll Over Beethoven" AND "Can't Catch Me" sound like a piano songs, and the same for other supposed Chuck Berry songs. Why rockabilly people like Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and a couple of others were exalted in the public eye and someone like Johnny Burnette wasn't doesn't seem to be about talent and merit but about money and whoever is willing to play along with the record companies.

First time watching Chuck Berry and man oh man ! 👏🏻 He’s so slick & high energy 😮 I love his white tux, his hair, his acting out the lyrics. And the song… I want to hear it remastered & through a great set of speakers ❤️🎵

1:10 "Here come old flat-top" was one lyric John Lennon couldn't resist swiping for the Beatles' "Come Together." Melodically, he basically lifted this song; just slowed it way down, added a killer bass line, and worked some studio magic on it. But when it comes to songwriting, that is absolutely standard. You take a piece of something you like, and make it your own.

John Lennons first edition of this song sounded much more like this song by Chuck Berry. As a matter of fact it got changed due to a warning from both Paul McCartney and their record producer that the original was a flat out rip off. (see kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHKtZoChesiIj8k) So they changed it and makes the chorus break up into a minor chord before hitting the sub-dominant chord in an otherwise traditional round of chords.

Yeah, Chuck threatened legal action...and if you look at the songwriting credits for The Beach Boys' "Surfin' USA", you'll see Chuck's name along with Brian Wilson's, because he sued them for stealing his song "Sweet Little Sixteen" and putting different words to it!

The fact he kept that line was like saying flat out what his inspiration was. An homage, no denying. But a very different song in the end.

BTW, Chuck loved John Lennon. It was the publisher who sued. In Chuck's film, Hail, Hail, Rock & Roll, Chuck insisted that Julian perform "Johnny B. Goode." Listen to Chuck introducing Julian & you can hear how much he loved John. Chuck never forgot how John promoted him to a younger audience.

I love all the Rock & Roll music from the 50's, was born in 68, and have a father whose knowledge of the most obscure singers and regional groups, is uncanny. My parents played the early music I grew to play, and lets get one thing straight, Rock & Roll is a mix of Country Blue Grass, Blues, along with a few other genre, so lets not get into ownership and who created it. Its a beautfull mix, And Its AMERICAN,,, The Raucous little rebel of the world. Just be proud.

I saw a interview involving early rolling stones. The bass player was saying he got into the sound of rock and roll through this movie. He said people were laughing in the theater. Saying this part was funny. But he was memorized and saw it for what it truly is. Electric rock and roll.

Chuck was a tough businessman too. If you booked Chuck for a show you had to provide the band, a specific amp setup (Fender Dual Showman’s, otherwise the price went up), and he insisted on being paid in cash before he ever played a note onstage. He was also rumored to travel with a .38 revolver in his guitar case

Black folks took country music and made it music you can't help but dance to even if you are sitting in a chair. That gospel passion and yes the drums, not racist to say. Those guys kicked in the door Elvis, Buddy Holly, Stones, Beatles, Clapton, Zep ran through. Without black artists Stevie Ray Vaughn might have played Roy Rogers songs. That is how big a legacy these artists left us.
