1959 Larry Collins plays a wild version of Duane Eddy's “Ramrod” live on the Town Hall Party! He is wearing his famous gold lamé jacket made by Nudie Cohn of "Nudie's of Hollywood." A jacket similarly worn by Elvis in 1957 for his 50,000,00 can't be wrong album. Joe Maphis is playing a Gibson EB-1 electric bass. Dig It! #Heppestofthehep #hep #hoth

LARRY’S Ability at that age is what makes him stellar ... not many kids much less adults can apply themselves enough to be that proficient almost anything ... I play alto sax and I’m not nearly as good as I should be for how long I’ve been playing ... playing a musical instrument is one of the top things that human can do... @@sherrilldean211 I absolutely agree, I don't decry Larry's talent for a moment. As you pretty much say, you have the talent or you don't, and I wish I did. Ten minutes on my brother's guitar in 1965 convinced me I either didn't have the talent, or the willpower to stick at it. I'm only saying, he didn't invent a musical style or anything.

Ive asked myself that same question a hundred times when I watch these old videos. Raw talent. They sure as hell dont need a recording studio to sound good. Everything sounds the same now. It's no wonder considering there's just a few major recording companies and a handful of so called songwriters. The days of artists being songwriters, true musicians and performers are pretty much a relic of a bygone era.

The bass guitar Joe Maphis is playing is a Hofner, not a Gibson. It is Hofner's "violin bass" which was the only model sold in America by the German company at that time. It was distributed by a small importer in New Jersey and you had to know enough to ask for one. A few years later Paul McCartney with the Beatles made Hofners known around the world and they got big league distribution for all their models in the U.S. which continues to this day. A vintage Hofner Violin Bass sells for about ,$2,500 to $3,000 (US) in 2022.

Now I can see where the king of pop got his moves. He's also moving like Chuck Berry used to. He's a real firecracker. He's really hip. Love the dual fingerboard guitar 🎸. 😎👍👍

Larry Collins was mentored by the very excellent Joe Maphis. If you put both of their names in the search you will find some videos of them playing together on the same guitar and lots of other kinds of fun. Joe was amazing. It's so great that Larry got the opportunity to start working with him at such a young age. Larry learned a lot of guitar chops and plenty of showmanship from Joe, and of course, Chuck Berry was coming up during these years too.

WTH! Never heard of this dude before in my life. What is he, 12? Pure showmanship and great talent. Again, only playing 3-4 chords. Early rock was so simplistic musically, the magic came from the showmanship of those playing those simple chords. This kid was amazing.
