It was fortunate that computers were getting cheaper and better and more powerful just when the old computers needed to be replaced. All of the banks replaced their old computers. Banks that couldn't afford to update their equipment were bought by bigger banks. The aircraft controllers installed new computers in every airport. By the time y2k rolled around most every big company had bought new and better computers. So other than a few odd things like 90 year old men getting draft notices not much damage was done. But, if people hadn't taken the problem seriously, there could have been real problems.
