Been searching a while for a good video about this. This video is a great teacher. Tried for a few minutes and it's feeling natural, nice work

From a physics standpoint, in matched grip, the push/pull or squeeze techinique applies upward motion (with the finger(s)) behind the fulcrum of the thumb and pointer (middle) finger, forcing the front of the stick back down for the 2nd hit. In traditional, the squeezing of the hand is basically using the pointer and middle fingers to apply a downward force in front of the fulcrum of the thumb pocket, pushing the stick back down for the 2nd hit. I'm a nerd, so for me, understanding WHY a certain hand motion causes a certain stick motion helps me immensely.

it's easy as long as it is done in a slow tempo. when I try to do it faster, I mess it up. There's no good rebound anymore and the second note is out of my control, it turns into kind of a press roll / buzz roll. Should I just stick to a slower tempo?

You explain everything beautiful! My father was a drummer who passed away recently. Growing up, he would show me traditional grip. I never really thought about seriously playing drums until he passed. Unfortunately like my dad, I have some arthritis in my left thumb palm area which makes it difficult to rebound. Any advice may be helpful? Thank you

Thanks Chuck - great explanation- Do you use this when doing double stroke rolls and Paradiddle rudiments ? and going around the kit ? I suppose you have to squeeze harder on the floor Tom to get the second stroke ( not as much rebound) . Sometimes I squeeze too hard and get a buzz stroke in the second note - is that from squeezing too hard ?Cheers
@ChuckBarchuk
@ChuckBarchuk 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Loris! Anytime I play a double I incorporate this technique regardless of what surface I'm on. And yes on surfaces that don't rebound as much such as a floor tom you'll have to incorporate more wrist and maybe even arm into the equation. The whole point of bringing out the second note is to have control over the spacing of the double and to make it clean. You want both notes of the doubles to be as even as if you played a right & a left. Now in this video I'm emphasizing the pulling in of the second note for effect. So no you don't want to squeeze the life out of it...lol. I may do another video on this topic to hopefully clear up any other questions.

Chuck this is one of the best I've seen yet, thank you. I'm very new at drumming and this makes sense! I would add that if someone is having trouble, one thing I notices I was doing was tilting my wrist back to starting position a millisecond early... but it seems to work if I imagine on the squeeze that my hand stays turned toward the pad for the tiniest second more. Make sense?

I was having the same problem. It turns out I didn't have a good enough rebound to apply a clean second stroke. My problem was I was not loose enough on the initial stroke hence little rebound. Gotta get a good rebound to get the clean second note

When you squeeze the hand is it to catch the stick after the 2nd hit or to throw it down for the 2nd hit? So is it more of a catch or throw?
@ChuckBarchuk
@ChuckBarchuk 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Steve. The idea here is to pull out the second note so that its even with the first. I'm emphasizing that 'squeeze' in this video to make that point. But your fingers are playing the second note.

Mmmmmm...good question. Well I learned this back in elementary school. So I probably got it down around 4th grade maybe or 5th. It's been a while so. But it really doesn't take long. I have several young students who can already play a double stroke roll quite fast.

are you supposed to squeeze the stick at the moment it hits the drum or just after that? -
@ChuckBarchuk
@ChuckBarchuk 2 жыл бұрын
Hey there. The squeeze of the fingers is what actually plays the second note. Now in this video I'm overly emphasizing that point for clarity sake. But your fingers actually play the second note in order to make it even with the first.
@kp6880

it feels like I have to squeeze to catch the stick back just after the second note, if i squeeze it to play the second note the note doesnt seem able to rebound...?

Hi, why when some others explain doubles they just opening up, and close, without squeezing the stick at the second note? I'm pretty confused 😂, can u please explain it a little?
@ChuckBarchuk
@ChuckBarchuk 4 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Thanks for the comment. The 'squeeze' part of this concept is being over emphasized in the video to simply show that the secret to clean doubles is to play out the 2nd note of the doubles with the fingers. If you only bounce both notes then 1.) you will have no control over the spacing of the double and 2.) the 2nd note will always be slight softer than the first. It's easier to demonstrate this than simply explain it with words. But the goal is to have your doubles rhythmically sound the same as your singles. For example play a measure of 16th notes at around 130 bpm. Start with single strokes for the first measure and then switch to double strokes for the second measure. Rhythmically it should all sound the same. If it doesn't that's because you are not pulling out the 2nd note of the double. @@pnsmexico Well I can do it reasonably fast; nothing like the guys you mentioned. But honestly it's not that useful of a technique in my opinion. I mean how often are you going to need to play with one hand that fast? Now if you're a death metal drummer playing nothing but blast beats then the technique is extremely useful. Otherwise I find it to be mainly useful for showing off...lol.

@@ChuckBarchuk dont forget about fast swing jazz and drum solos. Theyre very useful. Mine arent very fast, so thats why i asked.
@ChuckBarchuk
@ChuckBarchuk 5 жыл бұрын
@@pnsmexico Well I'm a drummer/teacher for a living and I rarely... I mean rarely...do drum solos and I've never needed to use the push/pull in jazz. Honestly the only time I ever have to use it is if I'm doing fast alternating flams which only happens in the practice room or maybe if I have to do really fast one handed 16ths on the HH during a groove. But at that point you might as well just switch to 2 hands. But again if really depends on the music you're playing and what it requires from you as a drummer. Another example...I don't play double pedal at all. Why?...simply because I never need it. But if I ever take up metal drumming then I will surely develop that double bass. :) But I just don't find a real need for a lot of these more advanced techniques personally as impressive as they are. But here's me playing flams where I'm using the push/pull in both hands. Enjoy. kzbin.info/www/bejne/omazoqurZbGssKM
