How to clean your Gas Water Heater Filter. This water heater is vapor proof. You need air to combust with fuel to operate the gas hot water heater. There is a filter on bottom of hot water heater that needs to be cleaned. Especially if it in a laundry room or you have pets. check out this out.

Chuck, I can't thank you enough. My pilot wouldn't stay lit when I'd go to power it up. I never knew there was a filter in these units. I vacuumed the filter and took some sandpaper to the end of the thermocouple and "bing," the green status light started flashing. I felt like a doctor and my patient's heart beat was back. It's working great again. 10 year old Bradford White. Thanks a bunch!!

Chuck, you are awesome! I followed the manufacturer's service instructions to diagnose the problem and ended up taking apart my gas lines and blew out every little orifice. I also just generally cleaned everything possible, except the filter (which I didn't know was a filter). I was actually getting ready to replace my water heater when I stumbled on your videos. I even made a little attachment similar to the one you use to blow out the filter. After cleaning the filter, the heater fired up immediately and I'm looking forward to a warm shower in about an hour. Thanks much for sharing!!!!!

@@ChuckBarron Hi Chuck. Great video! Good man! I'm a Charles here as well.. What advice would you give a guy on getting a nut loose that won't budge on the burner main line? I'm attempting to clean out a Rheem LP gas water heater bcuz pilot won't stay lit & 5 days without hot water. The tanks just 5 years old & the wife's ready to kill me! It might have loc tite or something on it? Blue stuff on all line threads that feed the valve, but no one has ever worked on this before & it most likely came from the factory that way. The pilot & thermocouple lines came right off, but the burner line nut is on there so tight it feels like I'm going to damage the valve & it's seal. It's tweaking it pretty good when I attempt to loosen with wrench 🔧 Hope I don't have to request a warranty claim on both the valve box & burner in order to remedy my issue. Best regards friend ✌️

Thank you sir for posting this informative video. I am a licensed plumber down in Florida. Although I was born in the NY/NJ area. Anyway, I had that exact Bradford White water heater service call last year. No hot water. I remember just re-lighting the pilot light. I tested the gas control valve and it was putting out 380 mv. So it was good. She just called again today. Same problem, no hot water. I am going out again to check but it is probably the filter all clogged with dust and such. Around my area, most of the W/H's are electric. So my gas experience is limited. Thanks again for the video. Your video is better than calling tech support!

Just subscribed and gave you a like! Have a question please as my dad just passed away and someone is trying to con my 76 year old mother widow into buying a new water heater I believe. They came out once as it went out and I couldn’t get the pilot to light and just like here after 2 days it went out again and I cannot get it to light as it seems like it isn’t getting gas. They replaced the thermal couple q340a1074. I didn’t see them clean it out except the burner plate and before they cleaned the burner plate they said it was burned up and after it was cleaned it looked like a new one and had only surface rust and it didn’t have any burn marks , pits or holes. They didn’t take in a compressor or a tank so I’m guessing they didn’t clean the filter and I will say it is a 20-30 year old unit so I don’t know how the older ones look like compared to the newer one as far as the screen you cleaned you just cleaned out. So if you can give me some advice I’d be VERY GREAT FULL. PLEASE AS WE JUST CALLED THEM BACK NOW.

Thank you, kind sir! You may have just saved me a few hundred dollars! Edit: Yes, you did! I had a heater stop working yesterday. Pilot would not relight. So your video got my water heater up and functioning again. I grabbed the ShopVac and the tools and went to work. This heater had a filter along the base where the air intake holes are. This was very clogged with dust & crap. Then, once I removed the burner assembly, a fine rectangular filter was located below the burner, but above the base - a secondary, finer filter. I cleaned both, brushed off the pilot light assembly and cleaned everything really well. Looks like almost eleven years of accumulated grime were responsible. Reassembled everything and it lit before I even saw the igniter flash. Fired it up and is working great. Big plumbing bill avoided! Thanks again! This is an issue I’m having right now, thermal cut off switch trips every time I relight the burner. But when I remove the thermal cut off switch from the tank. The internal thermostat does shut it off. But I gets extremely hot. Any luck with the filter clean?

Its a closed combustion chamber, the filter at the bottom serves two purposes, only lets air and gas fumes in if present that would then burn off in gas chamber. The filter won't let the ignited gas fumes traver back out of the filter witch could cause a explosion.

I really like the idea of using a compressure as I never even seen or know that filter needs cleaning. But you really do need to shop vac during blowing or something. No way I can just do that and move on or keep using that type of work.

@@ChuckBarron yeah, a ShopVac and compressor together are great. Suck up all the loose crap around, then get the stuff the vacuum won't grab with the 100 psi. THEN re-vacuum to pick up all the freshly-dislodged crap! Sucks breathing someone else's dust, debris, hair, and crap from 20 years. YUCK!

Hey Chuck. Thanks for the vid. I have an almost identical Brad/White Heater. I've been REALLY fretting this year, having done all you did in the vid, that my flames are pretty yellow. Yours look pretty yellow too. Maybe my memory is just bad but it seems that in years past my flame was MUCH bluer. I actually called a plumber today to talk about replacement. Mine was made in 2004 and I can't find just the burner from that vintage. I think yours is a bit newer than mine. What is your opinion on your flame color? Is yours NG or propane? Thanks again!!!

Thanks for the video. I appreciate the extra effort to bring us DIYers into your world. I will definitely do this with my gas water heater. However I'm not sure it's the issue. I can see how that filter being dirty would cause the burner to not stay lit...I assume because it can't get oxygen if filter is too dirty? Anyway with mine it's staying lit, but I am getting progressively lower water temp with higher and higher temp settings. I have tried to flush it, but not really sure I'm getting all the crap out. But I live in a highly corrosive environment too...Texas Gulf Coast. Love the music too btw. Haha.

Very good video however of course I would say perhaps to use a vacuum with the compressed air to suck up all that crap. You did a stellar job but when you fired that bad boy up I saw the flame has a lot of yellow which Im sure you know means incomplete combustion. That could be really dangerous if the vent pipe came off or had a leak. When It is burning clean and totally blue there "should" be no danger. I was curious of you wire brushed the burner before you put it back? I know how it is though, you did a big job and usually it is getting late and you want to get out of there. I was just curious if you thought it may be a problem or not. I was a HVAC/GAS tech for about 10 years before I gave it up for computers! Oy I hate computers. In HVAC you roll around in the dirt fixing a machine. With computers you still roll around in the dirt but its like trying to fix the mentally ill.
