1:13:46 As an American hearing this part of the convo it’s clear that there’s a misunderstanding of what Kendrick meant. And many Americans feel the same way. Drake STEALS peoples original styles, sounds, etc. It’s not about a moment or damned if you do damned if you don’t. It’s that he uses and disposes of people like a used tissue when they’ve outlived their usefulness. And he uses them for what he lacks CULTURE and COOL factor. Most recent and small example Smino amazing smaller rapper has had HIS OWN style for years now: natural hair and barrettes. Drake stole that for his most recent “era”. He does it to everyone and the lucky ones are the ones that he formed a relationship with where he can go back to use them more than once like the ATL trappers. 21 to make him sound hard and hood, Future to him sound cool and reach the strippers and clubs etc. That’s cultural currency that he uses to propel himself while never actually doing anything FOR the culture. Someone using another’s cultural currency makes him a culture vulture or as Kendrick best put it a COLONIZER

I wish everyone can see this before talking about this topic! Genuinely the cultural disconnect is so apparent when non Americans or non African Americans speak. It has nothing to do with drake’s jewish or mixed identity, which Kendrick made clear when he said Adonis was “a black man,” which for me is debatable but that’s not my business 😂

@@Nyeb2002 Right. He said that little boy with blue eye who is a quarter black at the most was a Black man. Kendrick don't care about race at all. It was about the culture and behavior.

EXACTLY. Why do Future and Drake have beef? There has to be several factors but I think Drake's collaboration with 21 Savage is part of it. Future clearly felt some type of way because he was a long-time collaborator with Drake, even working with him for a whole album. But Future feels like Drake essentially discarded him to work with 21 Savage. both from Atlanta. Both made music that appealed to the streets and the clubs. Future is THE BIGGEST rapper when it comes to Atlanta. Instead of working with him, Drake chose 21 Savage who would have been Future competition because 21 Savage is younger/appealing to younger people. He just moved on to the next guy not thinking about his older relationships.

You know who’s Jewish, grew up in Beverly Hills, and was IMMERSED in gangsta rap for DECADES, and NEVER has been accused of being a 'Culture Vulture' -- The Alchemist. Why do you think that is? Authenticity and a clear devotion to the culture. The problem with Drake was that he aligned himself with culTures and sounds from places that he has no affiliation with for monetary gains and false credibility. People seen how he's moved for the last decade and that's where all the "resentment" or "rejection" comes from. His disingenuity was called out and resonated with way more people than his arrogance thought it would.

People dont want to put respect on Kendrick's name, but his accomplishments are up there with Drake. ● 17 grammys to Drakes 5 ● Pulitzer Prize for Damn ● Longest charting hip-hop album in billboard history 11.5 years GKMC ● Highest grossing hip-hop tour in history with the Big Steppers tour ● 3 out of his 5 albums are classics where Drake has released 13 albums & only 3 or 4 are classics, most of which have an * next to them because of the 👻 writers. Take Care is his best body of work & The Weeknd pretty much wrote that for him. Drake can try to son him all he wants, but that doesn't. Kendrick just doesn't brag, he be inside.

Kendrick came in the ring wanting blood!! There's a reason why he called out everyone in 2013 and no one responded. When you guys talk about “being an outsider”, that is something every region in America outside of New York had to experience. The difference is LA didn’t try to sound like New York, Atlanta, Memphis, Houston, Miami, didn’t try to sound like New York. They crafted and developed their own sounds and let the world catch up. He never took over Toronto as a local artist. He’s cultural couch surfing from city to city, from style to style. When you say what was he supposed to do, the answer is be a champion for your own city FIRST. Where is the Toronto swag? Where is the Toronto slang? Don’t even wear a blue jays hat. Rap is a regional art form with a global platform and he approached it and himself like a product and the artistry passed him by.

If he worked with them and been himself (not adopting accents and such) or found people who were good and not already rising but put them on (while being himself) I don't think anyone would be upset with him. The lack of Authenticity and paying homage bothers people. He actually fixed his mouth to say Kendrick rap like he trying to free the slaves. That was so tone deaf.

Drake came to The States but he didn’t take over. From Day 1 he was put on by the biggest artists. From Wayne to Jay-Z, Kanye West…he was getting verses, beats, etc…from these guys. But then there was markets he couldn’t tap into until he linked with ATL. So for him to talk down to a J. Cole or a Kendrick is wild when Jay-Z signed Cole but backed Drake more only to have Drake start to go at him as though he’s above him. Likewise, Kendrick had Dr. Dre’s co-sign but you look through his projects they aren’t laced with Dr. Dre beats. He instead chose to continue using producers he was in the mud with. A lot of Drake fans don’t know Future come from the legendary Dungeon Fam because he chose to go off on his own and get it out the mud. These are all things Drake never did. He came over here on borrowed and stolen styles/songs from Canada. And then he continued that same method throughout his career. Whenever one sound becomes stale he’ll move to the next hot sound. Where Kendrick and Cole are constantly carving out their own sounds, styles. Look how long it took for Kendrick to rock on a Mustard beat. And then he used two types of Westcoast delivery styles. Something he could have done long ago but he was busy forging his own path instead of wave-riding.

Stand for something or fall for anything. Is what Drake stands for money and girls? Can you really attach him to artist development as a whole? Idk. I think that’s the main issue with Drake dipping and diving with so many artists all over the place. What’s his rap ✨aesthetic✨ if you will. His rap or hip hop philosophy? I don’t know if he has one. And honestly he didn’t start from the bottom so.. if he was doing it for clout and fame. Perhaps he should’ve leaned into it a bit more. Kim K but rap. He’s proved with this he’s not necessarily about the music, not in any significant way anyway…

No, i think he planned for Kendrick. Drake thought playing the field and controlling the narrative via the internet was the way to go. He took his Meek angle and Pusha T's angle and combined them to create his new plan. He came with club songs, memes and tea. He goaded Kendrick into the family angle because he thought the kid and DV angle would win it for him.

The myth because drake is the bigger artist the artists he "works" with benefits more than him is false, he benefits the most as he gets cultural currency and actual music as it clear the guy aint write much and its just a performer. Thats why he does it so much and from so many places through out the US and the world. Mitch is ignorning the fact that he doesn't go on do his thing he goes and he does someone else ting and does it to another artist/culture. Open your eyes.

What I would like to add to the conversation is this. It's not just the hip Hop community that feels slutted out by a interaction with Drake. The same thing goes in the gaming community. Yes, the online video gaming community. Drake does the same thing he gets with the hottest guy plays a game or two with them. They get a certain rush and then it's all over and they're left slutted out and they have no contact with Drake. It's a pathology

Drake is an actor. He’s approaching rap like an acting career. Each “phase” or “style” or “city” he uses is just a new role in a new movie for him. So the question is who is Drake really as an artist? You prolly have to got back to room for improvement and comeback season for who Drake REALLY is as an artist.

Kendrick has a moral code. He didn't mention an 11 year old's girl that potentially is Drake's daughter because that would impact that girl's life immensely. He didn't brought up people affiliated to Drake that are not in his Drake's close circle or in hip hop like Millie Bobby Brown. That's why he says not to speak on Serena Williams because she's not in hip hop or even in music and yet Aubrey was still taking shots on her

I was disappointed with Drake's performance in the battle. He seemed distracted, unfocused and underprepared, with a weak strategy, and yet, he was projecting so much confidence against a lyricist much more shrewd and articulate than himself. Was this hubris? Because if this was going to be his performance I'll never understand why he responded to "Like That" in the first place - he could've avoided all this damage to his public image in the process. Kendrick out-rapped, out-strategised, out-manoeuvred, AND out-streamed him. Kendrick dropped devastatingly detailed disses that deconstructed Drake as an artist, person and cultural figure, he showed he could diss effectively in all tempos, all while completely dictating the pace of the battle. Drake lost on every metric. As a fan of both, this battle felt a little one-sided. We didn't get Drake at his best. I just thought he'd be a bit more clever since he had a decade to prepare for this moment! Oh well...at least we got some great records but I don't think this battle reflected two artists at the top of their game. One was...the other kinda stumbled through.

It didnt have to be a lose lose. It’s doesn’t have to be a sprint. The difference between Drake and Kendrick, is Kendrick understands the long game. Kendrick TOOK his time. Everyone put him on the clock but he did what HE wanted to do. Real King shit. A King dictate the pace. Why cave into the pressure of the fans, when you know their attitude and pivot at any second? But Drake is chronically online, and he desperately craves attention and acceptance. He couldn’t lay low and strategize. He was a fool. 😂 Drake just isn’t that smart. And he is no King. He is just successful. There is a difference.

Just some perspective as an American. You're right that Canadians are looked at as outsiders or maybe don't have "street cred" but that's not the main reason he's not accepted. He just tries to be something he's not. Acting like a gangster or mob boss. Like we saw you on kid's TV as a child actor and you grew up wealthy. People are not that stupid. Spot on about him getting away with it because he could make bangers. He just pushed his luck too much though. Also trying to provoke the west coast when you're some Canadian actor? Like how dumb can you be? That's really not a game he wants to play acting like a tough guy because people can really get hurt fucking around with this stuff.

This rap beef is bigger than just Drake vs Kendrick. He signed a 400 million dollar slave deal to major labels when he was independant/free agent and coulda became a major label himself an put ppl on from the culture himself properly without UMG or major label interferance. The major players in the industry looked at him sideway for that and went for his neck. Thats why all these big companies are doing damage control now that hes lost the rap beef

16:10 bro from times when kendrick dropped Control, Kendrick's BEEN sonning Drake. From that BET Cypher in 2013 when he said "Aint nothing been the same since they dropped Control and tucked a sensitive rapper back in his pyjama clothes", and Drake was going live on media platforms and places like ESPN and calling KDot out his name and not properly responding with music... we all recognised what time it was. Drake is a serial deflector and will use any moment to put kendrick down whereas Dot will always and only speak thru the music. Any time Kendrick has ever been asked about his relationship with Drake, he almost never comments because he knows the power of the tongue - unlike some.
