Tikka T3x Lite 6.5 Creedmoor - Out of the Box Accuracy Test

Finally...Tikka got on board and started making their standard hunting rifles in the extremely popular 6.5 Creedmoor. This video should give you an idea of the out of the box accuracy of this rifle with run of the mill factory ammo. I have been working on hand loads with this rifle with even better results. These tests are awful. Someone always grabs their Creepmore and conducts tests with with this target cartridge turned rabbit gun. Why don't you just do the test with a 22 LR. Companies love to see there guns tested with target cartridges, next companies will be pawning off 6mm dashers as elk slayers. The best gun manufacturers have accurate 30-06, 300 win and 7mm mags. When a company tests the guns and there accurate you know they are a quality manufacturer

This is why I hand load. Shot groups on my Savage 110 shrunk to about half moa with my hand loads. I was blown away by the difference when I first started reloading.

I hear you. I think that's because Tikka took so long to get the Lite and Hunting models chambered in Creedmoor. Honestly I was going to save up to get a CTR or the Bergara HMR, but I actually got a pretty good deal for this. It will be a good hunting rifle with some long range capability. I bought a stainless Tikka T3X Superlight in .270 Win for hunting up here in Alaska. This rifle is inexpensive, so it has lots of plastic...plastic stock with no aluminum bedding block, plastic magazine, plastic trigger guard, plastic bolt release, etc. At least now Tikka has steel recoil lug and aluminum bolt shroud and a foam filled stock...all improvements over earlier Tikka T3x. It would cost more than the rifle to upgrade all the plastic components, and they don't substantially affect accuracy. I was able to get subMOA accuracy with IMR4350 in one afternoon of load development...my best load was at ~3,000 fps with a standard deviation of 4.6 fps with Nozler brass full length resized with a shoulder bump of 0.002" shooting 130 gr Barnes TTSX. I also like the recoil hole on the receiver (Sako/Tikka optiloc system) and used Warne Maxima rings to mount directly to the receiver dovetail (no rail or scope bases needed). The Maxima rings have a recoil lug that fits into the receiver recoil hole nicely. A very light, all-weather, accurate mountain rifle.

I have a Tikka in 6.5 CM and it shoots 1/4 MOA from the bench with my hand loads. It wasn’t quite like that out of the box. The more the barrel would foul, the more velocity picked up and accuracy slowly tightened.

I just picked up the Tikka T3X Lite SS in 6.5 Creedomoor, bought 10 boxes of the Non Typical 140 grain ammo, just hoping it would be OK, at $8.00 per box couldn't go wrong. It shot awesome out of my gun @ 100 yards, 6 shot group at 1.125" and a 4 shot follow up group at 3/4". Love the gun.

The 4 shots at bottom middle target the top 2 touching shots were your 2nd and 3rd shots. That looks to be the ammo that worked the best. I really was amazed by how the cleaning between groups worked.

1. Thank you for showing the "point of aim", most people keep us guessing. 2. I understand that the barrels are coated with an inhibitor that needs to be cleaned or fired-out to achieve optimal accuracy. I have not had a gun that didn't need a few rounds to zero-in. 3. The pressure signs support this theory and the fact that the bolt is sticky indicates that firing will lap out the tight tolerances; All of my German firearms had this "newness" issue. 4. Finally, run about 30 rounds through it, clean it, dry it, and you'll be stacking rounds with all of those factory loads. I'll be curious to see how your reloads do..... I love my T3x 6.5 Creed, great choice.

Just to mention pressure signs are due to the water on the rounds… making the brass to slip in the chamber, thus putting more pressure on the head of the brass.

You should try shooting 5-10 rounds of a certain ammo without cleaning then shoot it for groups sometimes a fouled barrel with shoot better than a perfectly clean barrel.

Man, I shot a box of the Federal 140gr and had issues with them also. Crater primer pocket high pressure signs... Brass was slightly dirty too. Sticky bolt... Both Ruger American go wild and Ruger Precision rifle. I used those rounds because they were cheap, to get somewhat sighted in and help get the rifles broken in... (copper elibrium build up)..

Made a call this morning - Found one Tikka T3x Lite 6.5 in Stainless...£1115 so that's circa $1500 Dollars. Christmas sorted. I was looking at .223 because my .243 is a bit expensive on Ammo but as a Veteran - I am curious about the 6.5 vs 5.56 so will invest. I notice you like tikka and savages like i do. Been thinking on a tc compass in a 6.5 as a backup to a savage model 12fv. Used to have a tikka 243. Killed a stack of deer with it. Some 200 yard shots on coyotes too. Shot one straight through his eye at 203 yards with that tikka. Dead on point of aim. I wish id never sold it. My savage will put 5 rounds in a half inch when im doing my part. Great videos dude. Wished savage made a varmint barrel 7 mag.

Ja Te I have a TC Compass in .243, 6.5 CM, and 30-06. All of them shoot sub-moa, my best group was 1/4 MOA at 100 yards w/ 6.5 CM. I would rate myself an average shot. Bolt is sloppy when fully to the rear. Stock is cheap. I actually like the Mauser style safety, I’m left handed so it’s easy to manipulate bolt and safety w right hand from a rest or bench. It’s not a beauty queen but they shoot great all the same. I use Nikon ProStaff 7 3-12 x 44. Scope and Compass cheaper than a Tikka. Although Cabela’s has a tikkka t3x superlite left hand 6.5 CM that is on my list of rifles for the future. Get a TC Compass, for the price you can’t beat it.

Mine has been shooting great. Especially with hand loads. I would check your scope rings/bases and action screws to make sure they are snug. I also did notice that mine is not totally free floated so you might want to look into cleaning up the contact points. Thanks for the sub! Good luck, I'm sure you can get that 6.5 running.

Chuckin is right. Try free floating the barrel. The Tikka T3x has a couple of little nubs that the barrel rests on about 1/3rd the way down the barrel channel. Get rid of those and your Tikka T3x Creedmoor will shoot .50 MOA or better with good handloads.

There you go. The CTR should be pretty nice. I am running a CTR stock and mag on the "lite" now. It is still shooting great. I had to shim the 10rd mag to get it to seat right, but it was an easy fix.

I'm surprised to see a Tikka fail to amaze out of the box. I just shot my Tikka t3x 7mm-08 this weekend for the first time and got 3/4" group with Barnes TTSX 120 grain. I can't find a rifle I like as much as Tikka.

Interesting. I sighted in my Tikka 6.5 and 3, 4, 5 or what ever groups at 100 yards have the holes touching or through the same holes. First time at 500 yards 5 shots 5 hits on a 12 inch metal gong. Ammo apparently means plenty regarding accuracy/groupings. I shoot Hornady ELD 147 grain

I am one who got the 6.5 creedmor. I first bought the Ruger 6.5 but couldnt get past the cheap stock. I sold the Ruger and bought the Tikka T3x. Scoped with Leopold VX 3i 6.5 x 20 x50mm CDS . Fine Duplex. I think anyone who hunts or shoots out West would agree, Pretty solid long range rifle. Well, I broke in my Tikka with the 1 shot clean repeat 10 times, then 2 shots clean and repeat 10 times. then clean fire arm and shoot and again cleanat end of shooting. This rifle IS dead-on accurate as the 6.5 creedmor is known for. My complaint is that as someone who shoots a 300 wsm, 30.06, plus many other calibers, the recoil on this gun takes all the pleasure out of shooting it. A $1700 set-up that is no fun to shoot especially since this was to be a long range rifle for my daughter (who prefers the .06). I cant understand how this gun is so brutal (although a tac driver) to shoot and would appreciate any advice, options etc. Thanks for your time. Mannix

I would recommend the Bell and Carlson Medalist stock. It's a 300$ stock, but it is solid. It will add just a little bit of weight which will reduce the recoil some. Maybe try a slip on limbsaver for the original stock first.

I have been testing the Lehigh 122gr, but I'm not getting the accuracy that I want. The 140gr ELD is running very nicely so far. I might just stick with those despite the lower velocity. Chuckin' season will be coming soon and this will be the first rifle that I take out. Can't wait!

I have the t3 lite in 223, 243 and 3006 and all 3 are tack drivers with the right ammo. I have ppu ammo for the 243 and I can't put the bolt down, they have nice tight tolerance on their rifles

@@dsmi8633 shoot a round. Wait 5 minutes. Shoot another round. Wait 5 minutes. So on and so on. They make a fluted barrel. That's actually a cooler gun to shoot. You can usually get 3 rounds touching before letting it cool.

I like 308 for it's mild-ish recoil and effectiveness. It is also more widely available and generally more affordable. And it will take down anything you want with a well placed shot. But if I were to stretch the range out on a whitetail or take a larger animal, it's hard to beat a 7mm RM

@@ChuckinTV I have the same gun with sako rings Leo vx 5,I lightened the factory trigger as far as I could and It breaks like a glass rod at a little over 2lbs no creep better by far than most my aftermarket triggers.The cartridge was made for large for caliber bullets the 140.I shoot Precision hunter 143 5 shot groups at 100 are moa or less.

Re-tighten the bed screws and just shoot.. It takes 40 or more rounds to get the correct copper build in the gun to shoot best. Match ammo or good reloads will do even better. I admit that lighter bullets shoot well out of Tikkas. For the first few rounds your doing well.

Appears to me the first 3 shot fired came from a cleaned and lubed bore. Notice the 3rd shot went high, telling me the bore wasnt completely lube free during the first two shot.. Then the 3rd shot is racing down a dirty bore, providing more friction and time for the gases to catch up w the ecpansion. Those tikka t3 are scary accurate out of the box, regardless of chambering. One note of mention worthy of passing... Never Never Ever use a copper remover in rifle barrels. Copper is far more noble than steel. Hoppes 9 is your best mistress. Best Regards

Try shooting off a bag vs a bipod when off a hard surface like that. With match ammo or tuned handloads I have yet to see a t3 that will not hit sub 3/4"' 5 shot groups @100yds

I just bought a Tikka T3x Hunter in .270 cal. Groups nice with the Winchester silver tip but not good with the Federal copper both in 130 gr.

Nice. Copper bullets can be hit or miss sometimes. They are much longer than standard lead bullets of the same weight because copper is less dense than lead. Sometimes the twist rate just isn't right for that specific length of that bullet. I had pretty good luck with Hornady Whitetail 130gr out of my Tikka 695 270. Thanks for watching.

No I haven't. I don't really recall ever seeing it around my area. I reload for the most part. I just like to do out of the box testing videos with factory ammo, as most people don't reload. This rifle is shooting 1 inch to 1.5 inch groups with just about every bullet I've tried.

I have the same rifle and caliber, I shot Norma whitetail 140 grain and it shot 1/2 moa. I think federal loads were a little hot, that’s why you had the sticky bolt. My reloads shoot better than the Norma.

Not always. Sighting in my brand new T3X lite in 7mm08 it only took 9 rounds. One round to check on paper at 50 yds. Moved out to 100 yards had 3 HALF MOA 2 shot groups for adjustments and 2 single checking shots. With freaking run of the mill Remington CoreLocts. New barrels can shoot well.

These are just the rings that come with Tikka T3's. I already had the Leupold mounted to these rings that I pulled off of my 7mm RM. I upgraded that rifle with a MT pic rail. I will eventually do the same with this 6.5 as well. But the original mounting system seems to hold up quite well. I ran the original rings on my T3 300WM and they finally failed after 500 rounds of abusive recoil. So I feel confident that they'll hold up to 6.5 recoil. Thanks for watching.

I've been asking my gunsmith to rebarrel my .308 Tikka in 6.5 Creedmoor and I regret. In .308 the rifle was more accurate (less than 0.5 MOA) and had a much more consistent point of impact. I've been testing many kinds of powders and bullets, different seating depth but after 1000 rounds I can't do better than 0.75 to 1 MOA. I have buddies at the range who have gave up with this cartridge, I think I will go back to the .308win or try the .284 which is one of the best cartridge for 1000yds.

Hey, I really appreciate you watching this video until the end. I get a lot of people commenting on the groups at the beginning with out following through til the end. ALL rifles need a few shots through them to get the potential accuracy out them. They don't get the out of the box aspect. Anyway I do recommend this rifle especially if you can get one around the 600 mark. For the money, I still don't think you'll find a better lightweight hunting rifle as far as the action, trigger, and accuracy is concerned. I've worked with this rifle a lot over the years and it has been a consistent performer. The recoil isn't much more stout than any 243 I've ever fired. 6.5 CM is plenty efficient to take on whitetail deer without a lot of recoil or being overkill. Plus the 6.5 Creedmoor is on par with ammo availability as any other caliber as well (your results may vary).

@@temtem7663 My son and daughter both bought 6.5CM, one a Savage and my son bought a Tikka. The 6.5CM and the 7mm/08 are tied for the best and most efficient deer rifles out there. Both have the power and accuracy for whitetails out to 300 yards but not to much destroying a lot of meat. My kids took 5 deer with the Creedmoor last season out to 180 yards using Hornady 143 gr. ELDX bullets and the performance was great. Only one deer traveled more than 15 yards and it crumpled right up with a great blood trail. The 6.5CM is enjoying even more popularity with the ARMY and SOCOM adopting it as their new Sniper Rifle round but either will serve. If you think you might want to hunt ELK eventually there is always the 270 WSM if you want a little more horsepower.

I was referring to the heavy bolt lift that the Federals were causing. That's a sign that the ammo was over pressured in this rifle. The scope is a Leupold VX-2 4-12x40

7mm/08 or a 270 win in a Savage Axis ll. Both have the HP to get the job done at 500 and I love Savages and Tikkas. If you wanted a little extra HP the 270 WSM will fill the bill and all 3 calibers will out shoot any 6.5 Creedmoor or 260 Rem, their twins anyhow.

It's a 24inch barrel. With my hand loads I'm getting an easy 2750 with 140gr, 2800- 2900 with 130gr, and 3000 with 123gr bullets. Hornady Whitetail 129gr seems to work pretty well in a lot of 6.5s. I'm going to try some 130gr ELD handloads this weekend. Thanks for watching.

You can't really go wrong. It's a nice lightweight accurate rifle and the 6.5CM is suitable for a lot of game. I've been doing load development and I'm pretty happy with the Hornady 140gr ELD. Going to try some 130gr ELDs next.

Did you ever get this rifle to shoot? What speeds I just sold a t3 superlight due to I could not get it to shoot faster then 2750 with 162’s (7mag) was thinking of getting the 6.5 creed but I’m gun shy now of tikka

Do you not consider the groups at the end of the video to be any good? Or did you not bother to watch until the end? I'm just trying to get where people are coming from. This rifle shoots a 3/4" group at the end of the video. Plus I show pictures of more groups. If that isn't good enough for a light weight hunting barrel I feel your expectations are unrealistic. I have more videos with this rifle. It shoots just about everything 1" and under.

@@varmint223 Sorry, I just get a lot of "those are awful groups" comments and I just don't know where people get the idea that a rifle just shoots one hole without any load development. I would say this rifle is excellent for a light weight hunting rifle. Great trigger, nice handling, reliable ejection, and most importantly accurate enough. I have shot many groups under an inch, which is more than good enough for most hunting situations. I would say if you're mostly concerned with accuracy over mobility, get a CTR or Varmint model with a heavy barrel. A heavy barrel will be easier to obtain accuracy with. As for your 7mm. I have the Tikka lite 7mm and I'm getting 2900fps with the 162 ELD-X with Reloader 23 powder. That is not close to max charge either. Thanks for watching.

I would say it's pretty comparable to a 308. It's surprisingly more than I expected. Given that the Tikka is very light compared to other hunting rifles out there. It won't bruise, but it kicks me off closer targets.

LOOKS LIKE A LITTLE FOWLING IN THE BARREL, GOES A LONG WAY. I THINK AFTER THE BARREL IS BROKEN IN, IT WILL DO 3/4 TO 1/2 ALL DAY, RELOADS WILL BE SUB MOA, these rifles have diamond lapped barrels.

There's no break in for Tikka barrels, they are all cold hammer forged not diamond lapped.

I actually picked up the Creedmoor just to not get booted around by my magnums so much. The kick doesn't bother me, but it's tough to spot my own shots. The T3 lite and hunter models are very lightweight, so they do jump around quite a bit. This T3x with the new recoil pad is an improvement, but it still packs a bit of a wallop. I haven't shot distance with this yet so we will see if I can spot my own shots with this rig.

I can't argue that the Compass is an awesome value and it will shoot just as well as a Tikka. The Tikka being at a higher price is of better quality I would say. The Tikka has a smoother bolt, better trigger, and just nicer machining all away around. I say the Tikka is worth the extra cost, but if you don't have the money the TC is exceptional for it's price. I dont think its the gun, iv tried 3 different rounds in mine and hornady was by far the worst i hate hornady ammunition, just needs to find the right load, berger and barnes are under an inch in mine and i suck i dont target shoot i hunt

Nearly all rifles can be tac drivers when paired with the right ammo and when the shooter has worked out his bad shooting habits. I've seen a $300 T/C Compass shoot MOA with standard ammo. I shoot MOA at 100 yards with used XBolt that I paid $650 using Amerian Whitetail 150gr. .30-06 at $21 a box. It takes time to match up ammo to rifle. Once you do there's no reason to change or experiment. Both my rifles shoot MOA with the American Whitetail. Why would I try to fix what isn't broken.

Maybe somebody out there can answer a simple question that I have. I had a very large gun selection at one point in my life. Without getting into detail everything is gone. Time to start fresh. I was just looking at an inexpensive 22 long rifle that was semi-automatic. It was the Savage 64f. I understand that when it comes to accuracy bolt action, one shot at a time familiar with it all that. Person I was smoking to tell me that the Savage is a horrible rifle and I should look at Tikka. I have been looking high and low on the internet he try to find a Tikka that is semi-automatic. To my knowledge, my short search I have not seen any. I've had the Ruger 10/22 excellent piece, as well as Remington, Winchester the list goes on. I need a Bargain Basement 22 long rifle that comes in semi-automatic. I don't see Tikka producing one. Too much grease/oil inside of your bolt. Cold weather does it. Take your bolt apart and degrease it with brake cleaner work that spring until you hear metal on metal. a quick application of silicon and place back together. Problem solved. Well worth the time to break in that barrel. No heat build up in barrel. Heat is number 1 enemy of a new barrel....any barrel

@@charligielen1173 they actually both made by Beretta. I used to own a t3 in 243. 1/2 groups all day with good ammo. I miss that gun. I now own a savage model 12fv chambered in the 6.5 creedmoor. It will do sub 3/4 inch groups when I do my part. Trying to find the right load for it. Some guys are getting sub half groups and one hole groups with it. My tikka would digest any round i fed it at 1/2 inch or better. It seemed easier to group. Now my savage is easy sub moa, just seems harder to get any one hole groups with it. The tikka i had would shoot 90 grain bullets i had into a ragged hole. Man i miss that gun.

@@sandybarnett7502 no such thing as proper barrel break in. Its a gimmick done by people wanting to sell you their products. If you shoot, clean, shoot, clean, round after round for the first twenty rounds, then every 5 shots for the next 60 rounds, then every 20 rounds for the next hundred, youve already expired 5 percent of the barrel life. Not only did you buy hundreds of dollars worth of bore guides, bore snakes, cleaning solvents, and cleaning pads, but you may have etched your barrel with harmful agents in the barrel. Gun barrels are made to shoot, not clean between rounds. Your barrel will break itself in. You dont need to introduce harmful agents into the barrel of the rifle. Buy a rifle, clean the bore with hoppes 9, run dry patches through it, a light oil patch, then another dry patch. I do this after i return from the range also. Only clean when you get home from the range. Overcleaning a gun barrel will damage it.

Both of those loads are acceptable for their intended role of hunting ammo lol. I know Tikka has a accuracy guarantee. Rifles can be as unique as we all are in our preferred tastes. Try some other offerings and find what she likes to eat. Good luck out there.

Very true. Those factory loads are more than enough for most hunting applications. I have done a lot of hand loading with this rifle since this video. It will easily shoot under 1" with all kinds of bullets.

Very happy to hear ! Yeah hand rolling for tailored accuracy is always the best route for match performance in a rifle. I will be starting a work up for my first Tikka in the next month. Local shop had a south paw T3x in 7mm-08 in a lovely walnut stock with the DNZ scope mount. I just couldn't pass it up lol. Good luck this deer season.

The T3x Hunter ended up being a very good shooter with a few factory loads and was responsible for a nice mature Ozark mountain buck ( 8 point with a 18" inside spread) and a mature doe to finish out our rifle season. OK, so I paid about $800. more for a 6 lb. 1 oz. Browning X-Bolt Pro at $1,750. But I get a "semi custom rifle" with the following: 1. stainless steel barrel and action 2. fluted light weight 22" barrel W/ both radial brake and thread cap 3.factory lapped barrel 4. spiral fluted bolt and bolt handle 5. carbon fiber stock 6. excellent single stage trigger 7. bolt unlock button while rifle remains ON safe 8. four screws per scope ring or rail end instead of two 9. three lug bolt (faster bolt cycling, clears scope better) 10. burnt bronze Cerakoted barreled action AND CF stock Lots there for the money and fully $1,000. less than the similar SAKO 85 Carbonlite. My first 3 shots for a group were 1/2MOA with 140 gr. Hornady ELD-M ammo. Notta too bad, notta too bad.

No offense but , on a cold day your first couple of shots (cold bore ) should be ignored . Also you are cleaning way to much. Let it dirty up a bit and see if your groups improve. Clean when the accuracy falls apart. Also I dont know your shooting technique but if you are noticing a (ticking ) in the scope , that is your heartbeat. Exhale hold and wait for the pause in your heartbeat to pull the trigger. Your groups will improve dramatically. Also on a cold day you have to account for mussel tightness . Gorilla gripping the rifle will cause flyers.
