Chunkin’ Streamers at Roaring River | Missouri Fly Fishing for Rainbow Trout

On this episode: Recently, my daughter and I had a father-daughter adventure at Roaring River State Park located to southwest missouri. We had just three hours to fish, but it was awesome to get out and spend some quality time together. Still a bit chilly out so we waited for the sun to peek out and warm up the morning.

It’s always a joy to spend time with my kids. My daughter, who’s usually camera-shy, made a significant step just by appearing in this video. She’s very competitive and was determined to catch a fish, and after some casting practice, she succeeded. Super proud Dad moment!
Our trip to Roaring River was just three weeks after the season opened on March 1, 2024. The park looked amazing, and we saw many anglers in Zone 1. We opted for Zone 2 and had some exciting encounters. It's a lot of fun sight-fishing for these rainbow trout and I'm not here for numbers, I'm here to hone my skills and challenge myself with trying new patterns and colors.
I started with various dry fly selections each one of these selections got attention, but no real commitment from those picky trout.
Little Yellow Sally (Size 16)
Swinks Swink Stone Golden Foam (Size 10)
Lime Trude (Size 16)
Soon I changed up and committed to Leonard Keeney’s PMS streamer pattern (Size 6 Black). It’s becoming one of my favorite streamers, mimicking a minnow/sculpin/leech-take your pick!
The PMS stands for Pine Squirrel/Marabou/Streamer, which defines the makeup of this pattern. Give it a try; you won’t be disappointed.
