I'm a late comer to this show...and as a carpenter, cabinet and tile fitter, I must admit, the first video of this restoration project was the most stressful for me to watch in this series (so far). How many times have I repaired/restored work started by homeowners who have watched a TV show, seen a pic in a magazine, or Pinterest and said "I can do that"...as Phil had done. Dozens, if not hundreds... Top marks to this couple and God bless them; they really pushed themselves, they literally had no idea what they were doing...but they survived, and I bet, learned from this experience. Top Marks to George as well; his ability to encourage them, while trying to keep them focused is amazing... My great-uncle, who was a boatwright, and from whom I learned (initially by pulling nails from boards and bending them back straight) would have slapped them upside the head with a board... P.S. for anyone who has taken the time/trouble to read my diatribe and are trying to restore an old structure, as George constantly alluded to in the first video: "put the bloody roof up first...!" You'll save yourself a ton of trouble...

And folks don't realise that a reno is twice the work of a new build. And more expensive.

Nine years later now and they still rent it out as a holiday let, but I'm happy they still own the place and can move in whenever they're ready for it, it's such a nice place. Not making the mistakes would have saved them a considerable amount of money I think, but the rotted roof and spire still were an unwelcome extra cost which was outside their powers.

It breaks my heart that with their passion for this building--they aren't able to live in it yet. I admire their tenacity and that they found a way to keep it, even if they can't move in just yet. What a gorgeous building and restoration. And the spire study!! So fantastic!

Has the steeple got a lightning conductor at all, did not see one evident. Lovely restoration and superb home and obviously now worth so much more than at the start, so pleased they still have it and what a great investment, well done George for looking after them!

I have watch almost e be very episodes amazing what all these people go through. . Always wondering what happened to all these people A lot of them ran out of money. So happy that you are going back to visit and see if they are still living there or sale. I love diy but I would never take up anything like this especially after our kitchen renovation that is still in the making because of money and use being the only worker. 7 year still not done . Thank you for this wonderful show. Please more.

I think I'd have rubbed some linseed oil into those pews before I tried to sell them.

Really happy for them to hear that they still have the property after all their stress and hard work. Yes, on any project you have to be on site even if your building a small cottage. Its the worst mistake anyone can make in a building project as large as this one was. Nevertheless its a stunning gorgeous church/ home.

Would have refrained from rebuilding the steeple immediately after finding out the costs of that. Just stretch the top roofline towards the gable wall. And re use some of the of the good remaining beams in the steeple, including the slates, to do so. 30.000 pounds less. But then again, been a builder (roofer) for 12 years. Although overhere in the Netherlands we use ceramic tiles instead of slate. Only very fancy and ancient medieval buildings have slate roofs.

Maybe they couldn't change it because it's protected as a herritage site?

A Tutorial in "What Not To Do": 1) Don't leave off weather protection - especially, at the start of Winter, so that the interior gets damaged. 2) Don't start such a project with an unrealistic budget - or, an Engineer's report, and then run out of money a quarter way through the build. 3) Don't start putting the spire on the roof when you know the sun will go down before it can be completed. 4) Don't expect that the sale of filthy and water-damaged pews are going to sell for top dollar. 5) Don't go off to China, for Godssake, in the middle of the job! What on earth were these people THINKING!?
