"It makes me happy, and it makes me a better person." I'm not religious, but that's it right there. And I agree that everyone has some kind of "religion" in their life, whether it's politics, sports, music, or whatever. If it inspires you you be a better person, go for it. When it inspires you to tell other people how to live, that's when we get into trouble. I also like your comparison of prayer and meditation. Great reaction; you have such a positive vibe. Whatever your beliefs are, they're clearly working for you = )

Hey Spencer, I get your point about happiness. I would have two questions I'd be interested in your personal opinion about: 1. What definition do you use for religion? You are using quotation marks so it seems you differentiate between people saying that music is their "religion" an actual/real religion. Is that a fair assessment? 2. How important is truth to you? Things could make you happy without being true. Should people believe in tuings that make them happy even if they aren't true? Or more personally: Would you rather believe in an inconvenient truth or a convenient falsehood (looking for a neutral term there. Lie, fantasy, delusion and so on all contain a judgement. Hope 'falsehood' comes across as neutral enough.) Cheers!

@@BeOtterMyFriend 1. I think that's fair. I couldn't think of a good way to phrase it, but yeah, I was thinking of 'regular' religions - Christian, Muslim, Jew, Sikh, Hindu, whatever - vs. other things people can get really passionate about. Like politics. "My parents were ___, and I'm ___, and that's just the way it is!" Or music. "You think Offspring were better than Greenday!? I WILL MURDER YOUR FAMILY!!" That's when I start thinking, 'chill out, and let people like what they like.' 2. I'm a big fan of truth. But there are a lot of things that can't be proved or disproved, like God. But like I said, what does it matter to you? Hell, I like to talk to trees. Sit in a forest and have imaginary conversations with trees. "Hey, buddy, I've been here for 200 years; I've seen it all; you're going to be okay," whatever. I don't actually think trees are talking to me. It's a form of meditation (or prayer, if you like,) that makes me feel better and want the be a better person. Is it "true?" Depends on what you mean by that, but it helps me, and doesn't hurt anyone else, so I see it as a good thing.

"It makes me happy." If you are aware of the history of religion then you know that it has caused a great deal of harm. You also know that the question of believing in a god is about faith instead of verification, meaning it's not about actually finding a god. Now if it makes you feel good that's great but that is always tempered by the knowledge that it causes a lot of harm to a lot of innocent people at the same time. One person's pleasure might be someone else's prison. A lot of this should come down to consideration for others. Just saying.

I find your comments thoughtful and interesting. I have to say that I'm with George. I was raised in a very religious family, my mom anyway, with generations of pastors in the past. I was a believer for more than 50 years and got a great deal of inspiration and comfort from my belief, especially when people I loved died. My dad was a scientist and an atheist, but thought a religious education was good, and we could make up our own minds as adults. He was calm, rational and reasonable and I felt loved and valued by both parents. I gradually lost my faith, as many of assertions seemed either ludicrous or designed to control and threaten. I think the fear of death, for ourselves and those we love, is the main reason for religion. I get joy and comfort in my family, and in everyday life, and the natural world. I am happy I escaped the bonds and blinders of religion. Religious people seem to get very angry when you no longer believe.

As for your last comment: No, that's exactly what I came here for. There are loads of reactions to material on religion out there and the reactors may laugh or not, but almost all of them don't give their opinions on the points. You may see they are angry because they give those looks to the camera and then say things like "well, don't get me started", but you don't get to know what they actually think about the points made. Many even clearly state they won't say anything about the matter because it's considered a controversial subject and they don't want to get in trouble. But what's the point in that? It's your channel, if I want to hear people laugh while watching Carlin, I can watch the original video. Especially with Carlin and other comedians who are very intelligent in their oration and who talk about intellectually interesting things more than the classic "did that ever happen to you?" observational comedy (nothing wrong with that) I want to have a reaction to the point made as well as the punchline delivered.

I especially appreciate how you accurately aligned atheism and politics with religion. That was an appropriate comparison in my book. Look at most Trump supporters. To worship according to Webster means to love unconditionally and without question. We’ve all watched Trump supporters twist themselves into knots for years in various attempts to create the illusion of consistency. His supporters have the unfortunate task of PR cleanup duty. He is their Messiah. On the other side you have the “Bernie or bust” crowd. These people stand for nothing other than going down with the ship in worship of a single man. That’s religion. You also mentioned people forming a religion out of hatred for yours. Again, this is religion. In my entire life I’ve never heard any argument by an atheist that wasn’t based on scripture. Hmm, if one guys disbelief and your belief are conclusions reached by the same literature by definition he or she isn’t an atheist. That would be a religious contrarian. The other side of the coin if you will. The only people who are without faith or religion would have to be agnostic people. Those who still have questions as opposed all of the answers are not religious . Devout belief or lack there of is religion period. On my way out I want to say thanks for being a good sport, and if what ever you hold dear to your heart helps you to live a full and productive life I support that. Thanks for the brain nudge.

I'm an atheist but I respect that you are not as you do not come accross as blindly following church doctrine but have developed your own individual relationship with faith and are respectful of those that don't which I believe deserves then to be respected in turn. I like that you can laugh about George Carlin, which to me proves your faith is coming from an authentic place that is not threatened by what someone else may think, not by right out dismissing it, but by recognizing that you have your faith and it enriches your life. Kudos. If you are interested in more serious religion discussions, you could have a look at people like Christopher Hitchens debates here on youtube. George Carlin has a bit about the ten commandments, which he brings down to 2 ;), and at the end he adds a new one "Keep thy religion to thyself" and to me if a religious person respects me as a non-believer enough to do this, I feel they deserve the same respect returned, for whatever meaning we find or wherever we find it, it is something to treasure.

Great question. So for me I believe it to be in a way both, a state of mind and al maybe a place in the eternities that will feel as that fire and brimstone, not necessarily be a place with fire and brimstone lol but I do believe in a ressurection for everyone (I'm Christian) but the state of mind for all of us will differ. Besides the state of mind issue is even bigger and more worth discussing in my opinion regardless of the after life. I notice I find myself in this state of hell in my mind when I don't tell the truth seeking to be liked or really just do anything that goes against my conscience in this life, so waking up and trying again to be better and if I in fact do so, I step away from this state of mind and find myself feeling a lot lighter, joyful, loving, etc.

I am a firm believer that all beliefs hold some truth and we are drawn to it in the way that fits for us. Maybe it's a higher power, maybe its energy maybe it isn't, but most of us are wired to belive in something greater then ourselves and to strive for an ideal. I am pagan and my Grandfather was a Methodist Reverend we had so many theological discussions over the years. There were so many basic beliefs we shared but how we got there was different. I like George Carlin because he was a thinker and even though he presented his ideas in a humorous form they still get having a conversation.

As an atheist, I feel like your explanation for your belief in God is the only valid and acceptable explanation. It is absolutely fine to believe in whatever you want as long as you aren't pushing it on me, and that includes the voting box. If you believe what you want because it makes you feel good, even though you know it's a bit nonsensical, that's fine. That's great. Do what makes you happy. It's the point at which popular beliefs begin to hurt others that I have a problem. Your outlook is very healthy and self aware. I wish more Christians were like you.

And the gall of you to say that people somehow know, deep down, that their beliefs are nonsensical. Get lost.

Cool to see how a thoughtful religious guy can actually agree with a lot of what Atheists say. Often you'll see agreement about criticism of the Church's behaviour (as how could you not?) But more interesting is when we both criticize the theology. The Church's picture of God is under assault from all sides.

I don’t have a lot of faith in my personal power, but, thats my own weakness, not hers. Besides, the toys are fun. The Catholics use them all too, but they are stingy with them. Incense, candles, rituals. Lots of fun stuff. We call them wands, they call them scepters. Great stuff, to get you in the mood for deep thinking. Runes, symbols, all kinds of things. 40 years I have studied. The history itself is a rabbit hole. I have stacks of books, and Christian bibles. I enjoy going on the “search” for the answer I like best to whatever thing has occurred to me. Anyway, keep up with your rabbit foot, or whatever. My magic box comforts me. You find your own.

Back when I was still a believer, I kind of had an epiphany on the clothing thing. I basically came to the conclusion that I was there for god, not to look pretty, so there was no need for me to bother agonizing on what to wear to church, nor did I need to wear a skirt. From then on, I'd arrive to church wearing whatever I wanted. Which was usually some form of comfy clothes, often jeans and a random shirt. I stood out like a sore thumb, but nobody seemed overly bothered, and I was more comfortable. Win-win.

Carlin was more of an orator than a comedian in my opinion. Some of his later specials are more like speeches. There is an agenda that isn’t laughter.. Brilliant bit anyway, but you said it yourself “good argument”. Not just popcorn comedy, but a good mix of philosophy and cynicism or “silly putty and napalm”. I’ve watched all of his specials, but very few twice. Classic but archaic. Storm: "I think you'll find that your faith in Science and Tests is just as blind as the faith of any fundamentalist" Tim: "Wow that's a good point, let me think for a bit. Oh wait, my mistake, that's absolute bullshit. Science adjusts it's views based on what's observed. Faith is the denial of observation so that Belief can be preserved."

I'm pagan. I was raised predominantly Lutheran/Roman Catholic. I've been Theraveda Buddhist and Sunni Muslim. It was after taking history of world religions and religious philosophy that I realized how corrupt they all are. I believe in a higher power but not in any religious context. I believe that we are all stardust and energy, which is neither created nor destroyed but can adapt to change into other forms of energy. Religion's, especially the 3 monotheistic Abrahamic religions were passed down orally for thousands of years and across many regions before they were written. Then the compilation of stories were edited with many not making it into the books available today. Let's not forget the translations, royalty editing the book to suit their own ends etc. IMHO it's akin to the telephone game gone awry. I respect others who hold these beliefs but at the same time I wonder how they never questioned the validity. Following blindly to something that is thoroughly corrupt because of faith (again faith based of major fallacies) confuses the heck out of me. I am a questioner, I question everything and my belief in a higher power but not religion allows me to conclude that said higher power ingrained a brain in my head which works so...lol but no hate to anyone or their beliefs.

The only time I have a problem with what others believe in is when they are trying to force it on someone else, or is causing harm to someone or something else. Outside of that believe in whatever or whomever you want/need to to feel how you want to. It's good to have some kind of a belief, even if you dont follow any organized religion.

What makes us human is the ability of self awareness and self reflection. But that mostly is not a matter of pure self related recognition, but is fueled by the fact that we, as communicative social beings, are recognized, reflected by others. Think about it - most we can say about us has to do with others. Our relation to them, their image and verdict of us, us compared to them. And more often than not, reaching for a better image in the others´eyes is the way to choose to improve self. Now, when it comes to contemplative self reflection, or just intuitive "self feeling", aside from others´ perception or social conventions aka "morals", we are also in need for some kind of a person opposite, for a recipient of our thoughts and feelings. That´s where spirituality comes from, that´s where "god" has it´s home. This assumed person opposite and it´s assumed judgement in the end is our inner "quality control", reminding us to stay honest and true when reflecting (and judging) ourselves, not do drift into dishonest dreamery. As philosopher Bertrand Russell said: Question is not if there is a god, but if we need a god.

Good question. And you know, I don't think you actually do... Meaning is perhaps the better term. If we find meaning and it makes us better ourselves and serve others, I think that is just fine. But to each their won. Thanks for the question. But it does seem like religious tendencies are part of being a human being. If we do not create religions, we make something our religion, for example a government can become a religion to someone. So maybe knowing that tendency can allow us to just keep centering ourselves back to our meaning and purpose instead.

Awesome reaction, man. I agree that George took somethings out of context, or exagerated a bit to get a laugh and that if you look in the scriptures you won't find that super hero savior God that atheists say doesn't exist. The bible is much more complicated and since I read it in the original hebrew (not all of it, still working on it) I have come to realise that the translations are a big part of the problem. The original text is much more ambiguous as to who is God, how many Gods are there, who did what when, etc. Through translations and then through mass indoctrination and convertions we lost so much of the original mystical meaning. I was born a jew but through most of my young life I was an atheist, then I had a few revelations and realized that Science is the modern religion (to answer your question from the video) and that I was not an atheist at all, I had just put my belief in science. Since then I have gone back to my roots and found Spirituality my own way. People need faith to live, no one lives without having faith on something, and I really admire you for 'testing your faith' and laughing at some of the ridiculous sides of religious beliefs while knowing that it goes way deeper than that. I wish more people were as open minded as you, my brother :)

Oxford Dictionary definitions: * RELIGIOUS: relating to or believing in a religion, a person bound by monastic vows. * RELIGION: The belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods. Science isn't a religion, it's a set of laws for governing how reality around us works. Unlike religion, we have to be willing to supplant our previous conceptions of reality based on The Scientific Method and Observation, whereas religion (particularly the Abrahamic faiths) purport the dogma of "blind faith" being the ultimate ethos to follow. I was a Christian for 25 years and gave it up after I realized I had no proof of Yahweh/Jehovah existing, just as the preachers I grew up had no proof that Satan put dinosaur bones in the ground to lead people astray, the End of the World was coming back in 2005, Evolution was completely false, etc. I don't go weekly to a "House of Worship" for Science, I don't base the way I live my life around the latest Scientific findings ... it's a false equivalence that I see Theists making time and time again. Science =/= Religion. That's not to say I don't have my own philosophies (which, let me be clear, Philosophy =/= Religion). I have made it an ethos for myself not to have blind faith in anything. I will put my faith in people that prove themselves to me (family and friends that love me and I love in return), and in ideas that I can personally observe and test (I have faith in gravity because I have observed its affects on me, around me and in nature). And if some of those previous ideas I had are found later not to be true? I do my best to accept I was wrong and move on (I need to be willing to change and grow). Christianity requires you to "believe" without observation or testing. You never see Yahweh/Jehovah giving support to any Skeptics in The Bible, do you? In fact, if there is someone not following his will in The Bible, God reveals himself to them and basically commands them to do something ... unless you're in early Genesis: then God mass murders the entire Earth's population minus Noah and his family (the only apparent believers) and 2 of every kind of Animal (what a "kind" is is very vague, and Biology does not confirm such a genealogical idea of every animal species flat lining 6,000 years ago, but I digress) in a global flood (including likely millions of innocent babies and kids), and (at the end of it all) God just says "Won't do it again, look at the pretty rainbow!" and doesn't even apologize for the genocide. Real upstanding guy he is. Well God, if you exist, speak to me, prove this Skeptic wrong ... oh, and could you apologize for the mass murder? I'd appreciate it, thanks. (Why shouldn't we expect God to follow the same Ten Commandments he expects us to follow?) And before you ask: I've read The Bible all the way through, 3 times, each with a different translation. They were all English translations admittedly, and not in the original Hebrew. I do imagine some things
