He's a legend. He left stand up at around 27, went to trades. Came back in his late 40 early 50s and became the king. Again, while he was really hot, because his wife died he left showbiz for several years and raised his kids. Then came back. Had a terrible awful childhood and a terrible mother. "No respect" didn't come out of nowhere. He was the joke machine.

What made Johnny so great and why people wanted to be on his show was he was a terrific straight man. He asks just enough of a question to keep Rodney talking to the next joke. He sets them up and Rodney hits them out of the park.

You should read Dangerfield’s autobiography. He had a lousy childhood with a cold mother. He blossomed as a comedian late in life, but had been writing jokes constantly. He sold aluminium siding, I think, when he had stopped comedy while raising a family. He opened Dangerfield’s, a comedy club, in New York. He also helped many comics, including Jim Carrey. He’s featured in the 80s films Caddyshack and Back To School. A true comedy legend, and he always wore that red tie. Jewish, too, but changed his name as many did.

That’s his job bro, that’s how he buys his house and his food and his drugs and his alcohol lives a wonderful life, because it’s his job to memorize. This isn’t the first time he said those jokes he’s probably said them hundred times at home over and over it’s his job his livelihood to memorize these jokes. God bless him. I got to meet him in a club. He was hilarious. He was getting ready to walk out as I was getting ready to walk into the restroom and he stopped and shook my hand at the comedy store. Whatever that is in LA.

Rodney had thosands of one liners, and as said below was a comedy legend, his "no respect"routine was loosely born from genuine life experiences, his comedic timing was born from genius.

Love seeing people react to rodney - it's always "can we laugh at this?" "we're not suppose to laugh at this! " "this is so wrong...but snap". And I dint know about anyone else but any time I watch Rodney (not back then but today - when no one can take a joke as a ...well as a joke) I'm like waiting for that jerk off good morning Vietnam to run out on stage yelling "this is NOT what we program here!" He's sooooo quick, I'm like always laughing 2 jokes behind. But one of my favorites of his was about growing up in a neighborhood so tough - that when the elementary school teacher asked the class what comes at the end of a sentence and the little boy raises his hand an says..."an appeal"!!

You asked how he could recall and deliver the jokes so fast; while he was certainly a singular talent, i can remember my grandparents and their friends and family who grew up in NYC. In their culture having quick, sharp wit and humor was very revered and everyone seemed to have a high level of self deprecating sarcasm and willing to rib and roast all those around them. I’d be interested to see if others had that experience with that generation.

The absolute master of rhythm and timing...it's hard to retell his jokes. But I like the quirky ones. like, I was an ugly baby, I wanna tell ya,. I was so ugly, my mom had to get drunk to breastfeed me. But it's all presentation and timing. My wife's such a bad cook, someone left dental floss in the kitchen and all the roaches hung themselves. The man was always writing jokes, and stripped them down to their essence and perfected the meter. There's a rhythm to them like unrhymed poetry.

The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson was the only Late Night show when I was growing up, compared to now where there are too many shows. Carson invented the format of a monologue, sketch and than guests. His show was one of the few ways a comedian could get noticed back then as this is where everyone got to know Rodney.

Rodney was a legendary comic. He also starred in some hit comedy movies in the 80's (Caddyshack, Back To School and Easy Money). In 1983, he released a comedy album titled "Rappin' Rodney". It featured the song "Rappin Rodney" which was a rap song that actually made it onto the pop charts. It was the first rap song performed by a white artist to make the charts. And it had a music video that was played regularly on MTV.

Just so you know, Seb, Norm's a huge fan of Rodney's. Might be his favorite. Hard to tell with Norm b/c he's said all sorts of different comics are his favorite :) You should look up Norm's stories about Rodney. He's got a great SNL story involving him. You also might appreciate George Miller. Another comic beloved by the likes of Norm and David Letterman. Often very cheesy, clean jokes, but also brilliant.
