My father, Norman Blake, wrote this song in 1975. It is on his 1976 album "Whiskey Before Breakfast".

Hey Lee !!! Thanks so much for the message- it’s an amazing melody is church street - one of the best guitar duets Ive ever heard is “I’m not sayin” with Norman Blake and Tony rice - they complement each other like they are the same person - both players are still unbeatable today, especially your dad’s ability to write timeless melodies with intricate pickin and rhythms - as a person with a more rock background myself .. I’m glad Tony was the host for me, to other amazing artists like Norman Blake - Thankyou once again for reaching out here !!!!

How do I get the privilege of writing a song with your father 😂
@leeblake3989 Жыл бұрын
Hell, Dad hardly talks to family. All Blakes are loners, but in his old age Dad has really become a hermit. I talk to him regularly just to check in, but that is about it. Physically, at 85 he is healthier than he has been in years. Dad's mind is sharp and he plays daily. There have been NUMEROUS people wanting to do a documentary on Dad and his music, including the Cohen Brothers and John Carter Cash. Dad has said no to all of them. But I PROMISE you this, I will ask him if he is interested. If he says yes, I will contact you.@@jamesamendola8086

Many years ago I was in a record store with my nephew. CDs were new. My nephew said, “Hey, there are CDs in here. I thought he was kidding, but I went in. Sure enough there were CDs. The Tony Rice CD, “Church Street Blues”, I had heard on WFUV (Fordham University). Couldn’t believe the sounds I was hearing. About a year later heard “Whiskey Before Breakfast”. Thankfully found the Norman Blake version “Whiskey Before Breakfast”! Changed my musical life, and my whole life. Still can’t play the song like Mr. Blake who wrote the song, or Mr. Rice (God bless him), but can try. What a GIFT recorded music is. Not everyone knows how to transcribe. r

Wanted to add a brief comment on the pull-off vs push-off section near the end of the video. This is a stellar example of the tonal difference achieved by a highly skilled player, and a goal many of us have in mind. Much of the subtle nuance Tony Rice achieves is explained in this demonstration. I'm not sure Tony Rice would have the dexterity and patience to shell out these gems of wisdom. Teaching the skills of the world' best players often falls to other hands. I thank you again good sir, and wish you well over the coming summer. Have many fond memories of the 2 months I spent around Donegal back in the 80's. Cycling past small town taverns and being drawn in by the music of local players jammed inside beside the patrons; such a rich and enduring set of memories.

Hey Albie!! yeah people think ya need a certain guitar, pick or string but its all hidden in plain sight - i guess it seems too obvious -- thanks again good buddy - any plans to go back????????
@als10236 жыл бұрын
No plans in the near future, but would go in a heartbeat if the chance arises. Want to get back to my wife's hometown of Scarborough some time, and Scotland, her mom's heritage. We'll see what transpires. In the meantime doing the best I can to keep the wonderful music and it's roots alive and well over here in the new world. Very pleased to see the wonderful group of followers you have here on KZbin. Many players learn the skills believing if they just had a better this or that, they'd sound better. As you imply, great players can get beautiful sound out of anything they have their hands on. I've seen it so many times, 1st hand up close at festivals etc. Thank you for putting so much effort and skill into the videos; many a player has tried to explain these concepts and techniques. The fine art of teaching is a skill apart from musicianship, even at the highest levels. The internet has opened up this incredible opportunity for us all to share the things we love deeply and are so passionate about.

I tried flat-pickin it and eventually succumbed to adding my middle finger. Fingers are always more versatile for sweeter sounds but I was determined to flat-pick it like Tony. If you haven't been flat-picking at a high level for years I would say this is almost impossible. Impossible might be the wrong word but I will say it's harder than the hardest solo you've ever lifted. And once you get it, if you don't keep it sharp by playing it every time you pick up the guitar, you lose the ability to duplicate perfectly.

I've always wanted to play this song but what I find most difficult is the actually rhythm of the song. It seems like a 4/4 but sometimes I cannot just follow it at the instrumental parts. Any ideas on how to approach this?
@chrisbrennanguitar4 жыл бұрын
I can confirm it’s 4/4 just got some accents on the beat your not used with - follow the tab slow till it makes sense then add speed - simple as that

Hi there! Where can I buy the transcribed book (is there an accompanying DVD/CD)? Also, is that a custom replica guitar? I notice the pickguard and the over-hanging fretboard are the same as the Clarence White D28

hi john! thats a sigma /martin modified .. couldnt get fundin for the book - (i tried patreon) but you make a good point mentionin DVD .. i was later thinkin its that complex you actually would need a video tutorial for each song in truth .. but you can now hire me as a transcriber email at christopherbrennan@hotmail.co.uk ... thanks john .. subscribe ! i got some rice comin soon

Btw, where we can find your transcription of this in tablature?

Hey again chief ! You find the tab inscribed in the video hard to make out?

@@chrisbrennanguitar no - I am just a bit old school and like to have the paper in my hands. I would’ve printed it lol... call me an old soul or whatever but I learn faster through reading and hands on that videos. I would pay you for a copy of that book and I’ve not signed up on your patreon yet but am willing to give $300 for your cause if that’s all you require - I realize the level of effort that goes into work like this and it’s well worth more than that.
@chrisbrennanguitar4 жыл бұрын
Really appreciate those words chief! The book is on hold for now - it just too expensive to get licenses etc - after 2 or 3 years years of tryin to get it funded on patreon i couldn’t even raise the $318 expense to negotiate the price of the print licence fee so I switched to KZbin lesson fundin on there - and that’s pretty slow on there too - it has to be said it’s not an easy form of music to sell .. for me anyway

thank you so much for doing this work. means so much. Do you play the tune with swung 8ths or straight? its hard to tell at fast tempos but I always wonder if swinging the notes is what gets it to feel like Tony.
@chrisbrennanguitar6 жыл бұрын
your dead right - swing it where ya can and listen carefully for the push and pulls with the tempos on church street blues

Chris, I’m happy to report that after a couple of days and many hours later, I have learned what you laid out on the video, and I’m very happy about that. Thank you for creating a top quality teaching tool. However, I still find the timing confusing. Trying to play with a metronome is a challenge. Also, I only can play it at about 75% speed. I feel like I hit a wall trying to get it up to speed. I’m wondering what it’s going to take to get it up to speed, and if it’s even possible for me. How did you get it up to speed, and was the timing a challenge for you?
@chrisbrennanguitar4 жыл бұрын
Standard 4/4 time layout its just the accent notes and picking pattern that throws people - are you a downward pick holder?

What great content just in this video. What gear are you using to record with. Obviously it’s a professional level HD unit, but do you have external audio jacks that you’re using with mics, or are you using the integrated mic? Either way it’s a top notch production.

It’s not actually- the cheapest usb interface available with a sm 57 - I add compression and some reverb later - that’s it tho
