Great stuff Paddy but maybe a mic stand would be better than putting your mic on the fence as every time the fence is knocked it comes through on the podcast. The wind also. But loving the training tips.

Well we could always make them better but sometimes we just have to get it 70% right and get it put up. if i wait to have everything right, then it tends to not get made or finished becuase its only me doing it all. But i often was getting good stuff from someone and maybe they'd start tapping or a dog would start barking or a plane would fly over lol..and all the time i am just hoping that i am getting it recorded and that we are not just talking to ourselves as has happened before too, ha!

What do you do to slow a young dog down on their flanks. I have a one year old that I am training and she constantly wants to go fast.
@ChurchmountSheepdogs3 жыл бұрын
Well at a year old, i wouldnt just go taking too much out of them. I would get them trained first. I would work on fine tuning the speed of the flanks, or their overall pace, at about 2year old. Very often trainers go widening a dog or trying to take some of the speed or forward out of a dog at a young age, only to find later that the dog is too wide or lacks push. So i tend to train them first and fine tune up alot of things later. But you can try lengthening your training sessions, working your young dog alot but without working your sheep too much..so flanking, changing direction, stopping etc..and burn off some of the energy in your dog before you really actually start to school the dog

You may have seen this video of Berts different speeds in his flanks. Bert upset his sheep when i would flank him so i work on getting different gears on his flanks. But he was probably 2 and half before i started doing that. But most dogs, will adjust the pace of their flanks quite easily after they are trained, usually a handler can manage the gears by the intent or urgency of their whistle kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKXCq3yMg5hqpZI
