I ask me some question: this cuple of musicians knows to play in a medium tempo some tune like *All the things you are*? Coltrane he knew. Where is the music on this performance of Giant Steps? What is the matter? This girl has a great technic but for what? How msny years to get this diigital technic? Which is the plasure here, where the beauty of this performance at all? I have to conclude my confuse state of perception: the world it's not only mad, but sick... If the arts reflect the genral state of a society, this one need a urgent emergency inspection... I cann't to say another thing.neither to go on so. And certenly, we are in a hurry changerover. The one what we see it's happen in the arts, it's the proof. Lucky for yours. I think this girl is super talented, and I think the drummer is good as well. That being said, I wish what they played was a little more accessible, a little more musical, not so mechanical. I don’t know that this will stand the test of time. Obviously she’s in her 20s I think and I’m all for the artist evolution however This seems more like an exercise in Complexity for the sake of itself, more so than appealing to the more aesthetic aspect of music. Great music doesn’t sound like a factory.I know she has it in her, just hope to hear more of it in composition… Just plain old-fashioned listenable music
@pathaleyguitar9763
@pathaleyguitar9763 3 жыл бұрын
I mean....giant steps was literally written as an exercise in improvisation, so this seams like an appropriate extension.... Also, that's pretty bold of you to declare "Great music doesn't sound like a factory", as though you are the authority on what great music sounds like. Also, "listenable music" is entirely subjective.

I approached this with stoke to see kids introducing a new generation to jazz, but this is so far removed from the Afro-Cuban roots of the genre as to almost sound appropriative/insulting. It's clear that there's a fairly insane level of technical ability here, but it doesn't seem to be coupled with good taste.
@andrewbarrett1537
@andrewbarrett1537 3 жыл бұрын
They’re kind of deconstructing and reconstructing it, in their own manner. But this is what happens when a beloved classic like Giant Steps becomes a warhorse and a test piece for up and coming jazz musicians. Once this happens, it becomes fair game for pot shots and distortions from everyone. This isn’t a new concept. It goes back to “ragging the classics” and even earlier into making dance medleys (polka, march, waltz, schottische, etc) of popular operatic numbers, for example. I can’t tell, from this performance, whether they actually like the tune as it is, and are playing it with lots of respect, or like it more as a vehicle to jam on. It’s all over my head. But their jamming is very high level.
@thepsychicalliance

@@andrewbarrett1537 word. I think my issue is that I've never been a huge fusion fan to begin with. I was actually blown away by their collab with Thundercat & Ariana Grande. I like their pop/funk work way more than their jazz.
