I’ve got the 51/52 complete, the hold down is very useful when mitering longer stock like window muntin bars or cockbeading as it allows you to hold and feed them while the hold down keeps them located. The only thing I wish was that Stanley had skewed the iron as a skewed iron shaves the stock in a cleaner way, you need more force when the iron strikes the stock at one time. Thanks for the video! PS Peter Jones’ comment about a wooden backer to lessen or eliminate the gap is right on

Thanks for sharing MJ. The Stanley 51/52 is my most used plane in my collection. I make a lot of wood models and need things accurate and square and this plane suits that description perfectly. One tip I have is, when planing end grain it pays to have a piece of wood against the stop so that it covers the tiny gap between the plane cutter and the steel back stop on the chute board. This stops the tiny bit of end grain breakout and keeps things nice and neat.

A great video my friend. I was not aware of these tools. They are wonderful. That shooted end sure look so naked without a tenon. ;-)

Thank you! You make a good point about the lack of a tenon. I use my Festool Domino when I put the doors together - I figure that’s the next best thing

There's a multitude of mitre shooting boards including the donkey ear shooter and box mitre shooter. I made a box mitre today after my Christmas box making showed the limit of donkey ear shooting board for larger box sides. You're correct about how hard the ninety degree is to get right on shop made shooting boards.

Those are amazing! Didn't know they existed! I have the Veritas version. It is one of my most frequently used planes! I always make allowances in my measurements to clean up on the chuting board. Also great for miters! A real game changer in my shop!
@justplanefun3 күн бұрын
Yep, after seeing some of the comments and getting some more inputs, I realized I should have mentioned the Veritas version. I could have also talked about using a crosscut sled on a table saw, as well as the lion miter trimmer. Guess maybe I can do a part II at some point in the future

I have a couple Chaplin bench planes and a Chaplin block plane. They're pretty good tools. I'd never seen a Chaplin shooting plane setup before, though. Very cool. Maybe "chuting" is the correct term; the plane rides in the track like it's going down a chute..
@justplanefun3 күн бұрын
Some other folks have mentioned the shoot vs chute quandary so I did some more checking into it. In Walter’s Stanley book, he refers to it as a chute plane and chute board. Jim Bode also advertises them as such when he sells them Conversely, the original patent from Jan 21st, 1896 (Traut and Schade) does not use either term. They just called it a miter or bevel plane. Lie Nielsen calls theirs a shooting plane on their website. Near as I can tell, the two terms are interchangeable. Kinda like cap iron vs. chip breaker or iron vs. blade (vs. cutter)
@OpeeChee13 күн бұрын
I have the shop version and tuned in, it's my go to board because of the weight and ease of storage. The 51/52 I also have and I am fearful of the frog breaking...it's a collector with the hold down. I also have the Lee Valley shooting plane and board. Would love to have the Lie Nelson .......bucket list.

You are also missing the T-pin angle locator pin. It is used to index the angle of the fence at either 90 or 45 degrees and fits in the open hole on the curved part of the fence.

I made the paul sellers combo 90/45 shooting plane. It’s great but it’s long and the 90 section is almost entirely at the far side of the bench. I have never used the 45 part. I plan on making the WbW MDF version soon. If ya don’t have one. Buy or make one asap.

I'm confused. Is it "Chuting board" or "Shooting board"?
@justplanefun3 күн бұрын
I’ve often wondered the same thing. Before I started working on this video I thought it was “shooting” board but from what I’m seeing around the internet, “chute” seemed to be more prevalent from what I was seeing at the time. I guess it makes sense that the track the plane rides on is kinda like a chute 🤷🏻♂️ I’ve definitely seen it spelled both ways though. Maybe it’s a shooting plane on a chute board! 😅
@dale1956ties3 күн бұрын
@@justplanefun Really? I just Googled "Is it shoot board, or chute board?" and didn't find a single example of chute in this context.
@justplanefun3 күн бұрын
Just for fun I googled “shooting board or chute board” and came up with results for each. “Shooting” it seems is more prevalent this time around but I saw some instances where folks state that they’re interchangeable. Maybe it’s all in how the search is worded. For what it’s worth, Jim Bode lists them as chute boards & chute planes. @batcavecreations did a video a while back and referred to them as a chute board as well. Now I gotta check Walter’s Stanley tome and see how he classified it in there

I see it often referred to as "Shooting Board" today but yesteryear it may have been referred to as "Chuting". Paul Sellers calls it "Shooting". So does Rob Cosman.

It's shooting board and shooting plane.
@justplanefunКүн бұрын
Thanks for the input. The terms chute and shoot in this context are interchangeable. Some sources, such as Lie Nielsen & Veritas refer to it as a shooting board while others (such as Jim Bode & John Walter) use “chute”. Either term is correct ✅. Kinda like the chip breaker vs. cap iron debate or blade vs. iron discussion. It’s all good!
