Chaka was PURE POWER! Gerald was PURE FIRE! James was PURE SOUL! Lou was PURE FORCE! And my Natalie was PURE ELEGANCE for the song that's probably MOST identified with him.

When l was a little boy, my mother would make me and my brothers watch his movies when they were on. She’d tell us: - “See there, now that’s how a black man is supposed to act! Like he got some sense! Y’all better remember this!” - l did in time! As a black child growing up in 1960’s Deep South Mississippi, l vividly recall my mother talking about “In The Heat Of The Night” and the scene in which Sidney slaps the bigoted plantation owner after getting slapped first. I didn’t understand it all until I’d personally gone through racial discrimination and fights and saw the movie as an adult. Then l called my mom saying: “Mama, I fully understand now.” She knew what l was talking about. Seeing a man with a 70 year career and NO MAJOR scandals in Hollywood in his life is unheard of! He demanded respect and got it! What a great black man!!!!! Rest well, Sidney….😔🕊

I have looked high and low for this speech and had the year off! Sir Poitier’s statement “dreams are as valid as he/I was prepared to make them” has been my driving force! 21 years later, still poignant.

Respectfully, Sir Sidney's influence reaches far beyond the borders of America. He was a global force of nature. As a boy in London in the 80s I used to break into tears at the end of Lilies of The Field as he wandered out of the house, into the night, got in his car and drove out of my little life. I was always so sad to see him go. Rest In Peace Sidney. I love you and thank you so much.

One of the greatest men. As he said, he saw himself as a man, not just a black man. Black people should stop constantly referencing themselves as black, to stop the division, and start just referencing themselves as people.

His example of dignity off screen is more important than the roles he played on screen. The REALITY of his LIFE WELL-LIVED over-powers all he portrayed in make-believe. May both legacies last into the ages of the unseen, unformed, distant future. There will never be another Sidney Poitier. ❤️👏🎭🙍🏽♂️
