i saw an excellent theory online, of course we cant know if its true, but here goes Apparently gus may have been involved with pinochet, who ruled chile (in real life) and led a drug empire. Pinochet lost power in 1990, which matches up with gus' story as well. In S3E9 of bb "Kafkaesque" you can see that madrigal owns Los Pollos Hermanos during the opener. Could this explain how gus managed to get involved with such a big company?

epmtunes As a chilean, I’d say it makes a lot of sense. During Pinochet’s dictatorship, Chile went through three major changes: human rights violations became the bread and butter of the military goverment, the economy expanded into a neoliberal capitalist free-market, and secret drug cartels with ties to the military govt emerged. If there’s a guy that can do all three, it’s gotta be Gus. Also, to quote Héctor Salamanca: “gran negociante, gran generalísimo... yo digo que es pura mierda” (great businessman, great general... I say he’s full of shit) makes it quite clear that Gus had ties with the Chilean military goverment.
