In 1966,travelled from London to Durrow Station for our annual summer holiday in Stradbally. I was 3 years old and vaguely remember alighting at Stradbally. The line closed March 1967.

My father was from near the villages of Villierstown and Aglish, on the way back to England we had to travel to Waterford station by car. It does seem sad that the county of Waterford does not have any rail lines across the whole of it. I do exclude the Suir valley narrow gauge in that statement.

A delightful video, so nice. I would have been 20 then. Many happy memories of the north Wexford line and trips to Tramore in earlier years. Richard Kingham

I'm from the north and my son and I rode the greenway in 2018 and I was struggling on some of the gradients coming back to Kilmacthomas. I was thinking that some of the trains must have been double headed and, sure enough, I saw a photo of one. I'd love to get back. The film brings back a lot of memories.

Thanks Robin, glad you found the film of interest having done the greenway in 2018.

Not 100 sure but I don't think there was any doubles of B141 class working on the line but failed locos would have been hauled on trains . B121s , A and C class plus B101 Sulzers along with an occasional B141 worked the line.

At Gracedieu Junction, I think the other track went down to the South Quays where there used to be a working port. In the car park opposite Treacy's Hotel, there's a steel rail embedded in the road surface. And in Bilberry, the road goes over a bridge beside Waters Gate and the Greenway car park.
@IrishRailwayRecordSociety4 жыл бұрын
That's right, the line leading away from Grace Dieu served the old terminus at 'Waterford South' near the port. The station closed in the late 1900s, but the yard remained in use for goods until the mid-1970s.

I can tell you about a real cover up. On August 1, 1980 they derailed a train in Buttevant Station, County Cork, Ireland. The resulting crash killed 18 people and injured about 70. They said it was caused by negligence. They had wrongfully placed a set of manually operated points on the tracks. It was set to derail the train. That was not an accident. Negligence was not the reason. They derailed that train deliberately. That accusation can be backed up by six months of detailed, explicit warnings and threats that came before this act of terrorism. The next morning, August 2, 1980, a bomb slaughtered 86 people, and injured 200 in the main train station in Bologna, Italy. This attack, too, had been detailed in the threats. I ought to know. I had heard all these terrorist threats clearly. I survived the derailment in Ireland.

I am almost certain that my younger brother and I were the two little guys standing at Kilmeaden station. We lived close by and spent many a day at the station during the summer school holidays.The station master was a lovely man and when goods trains were shunting in to the little goods yard we often got a spin in the engine.

Every town should have a train running through it in 2020 Ireland.. Of course this is not to be and it's so sad that the people of Dungarvan don't have a choice to take the train from their home town to travel freely around the country.. I can vaguely remember traveling in the backseat of my dads old ford car having to stop as the barrier came down to allow the train to continue on its route on the way out to Clonea Strand . A wonderful video and thanks for putting it up..
