I feel like Ariel defeating Ursula in the Broadway play is more effective for Ariel as a character, than Eric defeating Ursula in the movie was.

getting ride of Vanessa, and removing the last half of the movie was wrong and Ariel ws and did have girl power without them adding it to the show. you can let someone you love help you and be rescued, and that's not being less of a women or a man. With all of Disaney's money they could have done the show the way they did Beauty and the beast and put the film on stage. The demos for this show are ten times better than what ended up going on Broadway, plus it followed the tale that Mekan and the late Howard Ashman created. This I'm a women so I don't need a man is crap, and bunk. cause both people in a relationship need to help one another. And Ariel wasn't just a helpless mermaid during that fight, she killed flotsam and jetsam when they attacked Eric, and that would have been better live on stage. I hope the new figs doesnt go all girl power feminist on Ariel, she's a teenager 16 and not a super hero.

@@wwozanewmusical she doesn’t need a man. She’s her own person and it’s far better for her to be the one to defeat the villain than it is for Eric, who doesn’t even know Ursula. In all other stories the hero fights the antagonist. Dorothy defeats the wicked witch of the west. Harry Potter defeats Voldemort. Why shouldn’t Ariel defeat Ursula? It’s makes NO sense for Eric to be the one to kill her. Also. The original creators of the Disney animated version also worked on the broadway version. So that has nothing to do with it.

​​​​​@@WTKB82year late I guess you missed the whole point of the original movie. Ariel was always her own character and there is nothing wrong with needing help from a man or anyone else! Besides she had already saved his life, Eric was returning the favor and proving to Triton not every human was bad. That was the main conflict of the story it was not about who defeats the villain. Youd rather that trashy remake? Cuz its made NO sense for Ursula wanting to destroy Eric instead of Ariel since she's the one who ruined her plans and got her eels killed. As well as Ariel being able to steer a wheel which was really dumb!

@@Rachet87-yp7qq what are you talking about ? The only reason Ursula goes after them is because Eric attacked her and then Ariel makes her destroy her minions in retaliation. Ariel is the main character, she’s the person who needs to defeat the antagonist. That’s how it is in every story. Why expect this to be different? King triton doesn’t need to see a human do a good thing to learn that not all humans are bad because that’s not how prejudice works, that’s a MASSIVE issue because it now places the burden of getting rid of racism upon the victims of racism and not the perpetrators. ImGine a movie about the holocaust where the Jews are told to be really nice and Hitler will leave them alone. That’s not how it works. Triton has to learn to put his prejudice down on his own after he sees how hard his daughter is willing to fight for what she desires. Ariel can save Eric a million times and it doesn’t alter the fact that she also needs to defeat Ursula. Eric. Doesn’t. Know. Ursula. He has no role in that aspect of the film. It makes no sense for him to defeat her beyond classic fairytale sexism that delegates the man as the hero and the woman as the pretty face to be rescued. The remake made a lot of mistakes but Ariel defeating Ursula wasn’t one of them. Again, in ever retelling of the Disney version of the little mermaid, it’s always Ariel who defeats Ursula. It’s never Eric.

Yet people threw a hissy fit with Ariel killing Ursula by driving a ship into Ursula in the remake. Never mind that the Broadway show already beat the live action remake to it! If the Broadway show came out today, people would call it “woke”. 🙄
