Since 1975, the Society of the Cincinnati has sponsored the annual George Rogers Clark Lecture, which recognizes the scholarship of leading historians of the American Revolution. Some of the Clark Lecturers-most notably Edmund S. Morgan, whose The Genius of George Washington is a classic of Washington scholarship-have presented lectures that stand alone as important works of scholarship. Others, including David McCullough, have offered a very personal perspective on one of their major published works. Gordon S. Wood and others have distilled a generation of classroom teaching and scholarship into a synthesis illuminating the major significance of the American Revolution. Still others, including David Hackett Fischer, have offered a glimpse of the historian's craft by presenting a lecture based on their ongoing research.

Washington's Newbergh speech is beautiful. It makes me cry. Perhaps I'm too sentimental of a Patriot.

It's easy to get desensitized because he's everywhere, from an early age we learn in school. But when you REALLY take the time one day to learn the why's it's hard not to argue he's one of the greatest men who ever walked the earth and we wouldn't be here if not for him. He is the linchpin, nobody argues that. There could be another Benjamin rush, a Tom pain, a Jefferson maybe even a Franklin but not Washington

I knew George Washington turned down being made king by the army. But that's all I knew. After listening to this presentation, I want to read the original sources. Please list the sources you referred to in this amazing lecture.

Ours is the only Republic that has not failed in practice and has lasted under a single constitution, unchanged for 245 years. Romes Republic never lived up to its ideals as it never freed its slaves and being that it created a permanent dependent class, it decended into empire before its republican virtues ever really had chance. When Rome was a new republic and it had only its own city, Cincinnatus was a farmer Patrician just like Washington. Rome was not as of yet a slave economy. It's rustic virtue was real and ots promise was real if it would assimilate its conquered like us. Instead it enslaved its conquered and that makes for a weak Republic and an empire dependent on constant expansion. Washington putting down the army plot was the critical point. It was the point where we would either become a military dictatorship or a free republic.
