I completely believe that people start crying when they see Fiona. I started to tear up watching this video and seeing how far she came- she was so little when she was born! I can't believe she made it despite all the odds, but dang did she have an excellent and brilliant care team. You guys have done an amazing job from start to finish!

I love that the mom seemed to know and was calm about the ultrasound and giving milk. I believe she also probably instinctively had her on land. Though in nature it probably would've been different, it's like she knew that they would help her baby. Animal instincts are truly amazing.

If birth was in the morning at that early hour ..would Fiona have survived since she went downhill quickly ..probably not as no one was expecting her to birth. Thank God for this gift..after 75 years I believe I read. 🙏🙏

I think Bibi is a pretty smart hippo - and she obviously has great trust in her keepers to let them use ultrasounds on her and to milk her. Although I have no doubt the food certainly helped!
@StonedtotheBones13Ай бұрын
Iirc, her being in the water for 12 hours WAS maternal instinct. That's where they naturally give birth, so Iunno. Maybe Bibi knew she was premature 🤷

Everything you did broke barriers in the knowledge about hippo gestation and birth and development. There is now a record of ultrasound for gestation, a milk formula, how to care for a premie, teaching an orphan hippo how to be a hippo, etc. All important milestones for protecting a species…

So I usually don't agree with animals being caged and put on display for loud kids and adults. But the care you guys give Fiona and the love. All the work you put into saving her life is absolutely beautiful. I mean come on.. you milked a hippo.. that's dedication. And not just that... you guys made it so much easier for other zoos to be able to deal with a premature hippo. Ypu guys are amazing.❤❤❤❤

How many people can say the held a hippo, not many. It is also neat how the were able to keep the mother happy by feeding her while doing the ultrasounds. The entire story is awesome! Priceless Fiona would not have survived in the wild for sure. I am usually very strongly against having animals in captivity, but this time is different.
@leahryan55606 жыл бұрын
Amy Kruger: My science teacher said that lions live twice as long in captivity than in the wild. So it’s not always bad.
@victoriabardsley80972 жыл бұрын
If Fiona had been born in the wild she would not have survived. She was far too early - she couldn't even stand which means she would not have been able to nurse and certainly would not have been able to escape predators. She would have been a sitting duck.

I wonder what caused her premature birth in the first place. Fiona is mom was fed well and cared for. She wouldn't have been stressed for anything, yet, it ended in a premature birth. Had little Fiona been born in the wild she wouldn't have survived. I'm so glad she survived with the best care that could have been given her. All those people didn't give up on her. Thumbs UP !!!!

100% amazing ! I guess the mother refused because the baby was too weak to stay alive and that would be natural? Anyway, +The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden , please tell me: she seems to have some wounds on her sides. What and why are these ? Also, BRAVO for the idea of milking a HPPO ! Whoever came up with that idea, was so innovative and creative, and did a great job with that ! Also, the mother must have trusted you so much - she must feel safe with you guys. And THAT is not an easy thing. Amazed.
