I considered this design, but I don't like that it uses concrete in tension. The side rails are basically a pry bar in those concrete blocks trying to fracture them and concrete is very weak in tension. I would also put the middle block with the holes vertical so the weight is fully supported by the concrete in compression instead of on a concrete span which puts it in tension. It's a cool idea, but I'd rather not have it collapse and have to restack all the wood.

@@juditharsenault2131 Yes, true cinder blocks are much weaker than concrete blocks. When most people say cinder blocks now they are referring to concrete blocks also called CMUs.

I made one like this about 6 years ago. Zero issues. I have made it for a friend about 2 years ago, but doubly long using 5 blocks and 4 landscape Timbers. Also zero issues. I do agree the middle block needs to be holes vertical like the end blocks for strength.

Just built and stacked this for my first ever firewood build( I'm a city boy). This was so easy and works great! Holds a lot more wood than it looks. I made one mistake though. I was halfway full loading the wood when I realized I forgot to put a brick in the middle. The wood base was bending from the weight but I was able to move some dirt/brick around to fit the brick under it. So far so good! Thanks again!!

I needed just a 4-foot wide rack for a 1/4 face cord, and then my light bulb brain went off....so I "upgraded" my rack simply! Since it is placed alongside my shed, and my shed sits on a pad I built, using 57 stone....After placing in the 2x4s I just filled the cinderblock gaps with 57 stone to reduce any sideways shifting! I suppose that you could also dump in some sakrete if on a solid surface! Of course, the cinderblocks become permanent fixtures at that point - but it IS an option!

If you make it double wide with two cinder blocks next to each other, would it be more stable? I had one with slightly different design and had a partial collapse. I think it may be because ground underneath got a lot of rain. Also maybe because the wood is not uniform lengths because it’s branches from trees damaged in an ice storm. I’m going to try this design and not stack as high. Also trying it wider.

This is brilliant. And SO much better than the overpriced metal racks on that well-known website. Those things have thin metal legs that sink into the ground under the weight of the wood, requiring a good bit of ground preparation. And the "covers" they come with disintegrate in less than a year. (yes, i was that guy.)

Hey man this was awesome! Very simple supplies but excellent execution. I have two questions: 01) I want to erect this on my brick deck as opposed to on my lawn, as it is closer to my outdoor fire pit which I want to keep for bonfires in the winter and or for smoking meat outdoors in my Green egg. Do you think it’s okay to build two of these racks next to each other facing each other or better to make an L shaped rack next to each other. I am not using the wood for indoor burning at all, I don’t have a chimney yet. I may by next end of fall 2023. 02) If I can’t get any symmetrically timber for the floor boards of this stand, what kind of posts should I buy as far as material and dimensions? Ideally if money were no issue should I use Cedar or treated pine/ Untreated Pine ? I think I have some 6x10 - Ten foot long posts and some 2x4 - 8’ long untreated pine boards. Will either of those suffice if I make them 5’ by cutting the 10’ posts or keeping long with the 8’ untreated pine? I am in Kenosha Wisconsin and right on Lake Michigan. Most of the lumber I have which I wil saw up and then split is Boxelder and Mulberry. I do have some Apple and Cherry that I will use for smoking Salmon & Trout. Everything else will be for bonfires this winter and for burning for water heating for the stones in my outdoor canister Sauna.

You could make 2 racks that are parallel to each other, just leave a foot or so gap between the two racks so air can flow between them. Also, I wouldn't stack it against your home since bugs and mice love to visit the wood pile. This would also allow you to access both sides of the racks so you're not stepping over them. I've never used a 2x4 for the base so I think I would stick to at least a landscape timber or 4x4. The 6x10 would work, but that would be overkill so maybe those would be better saved for a future project since they're expensive pieces of lumber. You could utilize the 8' long 2x4's for the uprights....your rack just wouldn't be as tall but it would be totally fine. The only issue would be using untreated lumber, but it would last for several years before the 2x4's would rot. I hope this helps and good luck with your project!
