The fact that she isn't wearing any jewelry beside a few sequins and glitter, and the dress is so simple - but might just possibly be one of the most beautiful blue dresses in all of cinema speaks wonders. This truly is the perfect fairy-tale movie, and the whole scene here was so fantastically done.

This is hands down the BEST live action Disney film. It’s full of nostalgic, old-fashioned fairytale magic. It’s uplifting, beautiful, creative, and everything is so colorful. Saw it in theaters and the CGI effects were dazzling and gorgeous. The costumes by Sandy Powell are stunning. The soundtrack by Patrick Doyle is fantastic. The casting is perfect. Exceptional movie. Lily James gives a phenomenal performance, perfectly balancing between the essential "theatrical" acting the period & Disney request and the realistic portrayal of an abused girl with a heart full of dreams in the 1700s. Cinderella is often called 'weak' but she's truly a role model for young girls. No prince "saved her", she suffered emotional abuse and neglect, but she still managed to keep fighting, hoping and maintaining her ability of forgiveness and purity. She's a survivor, she's a dreamer, and we should never call those things "weaknesses".

It's actually more probable it's based on 1800s (the gowns really remind European 1850s/1860s, and inside Ella's home we can see a Japanese room, typical in the late 1800s) than 1700s, but still, yeah...
@arctistarfox Жыл бұрын
This is one of many reasons that Cinderella remains my favorite fairytale, and Lily James' portrayal of the titular character is exactly how I imagine the character today with adult hindsight. The 1950's Disney film is the first version of the tale I remember watching as a child in the 2000's and early 2010's. It's one of the first full-length Disney films I vividly remember watching period, including the Lion King, Beauty and the Beast (which is my mother's favorite), and The Little Mermaid. I didn't understand the meaning of the tale until I started reading fan-fiction adaptations of the rags to riches story and rewatching the two Disney films as a teenager and now adult.

I have watched this scene many times, and one thing that I didn't exactly recognize at first but adds so much to this scene is that Lily James is mic'd through the dance. You can hear her breathing, the little giggle, the dress swishing around. You're not watching her from the side of the room, you are with her for every step. It's magical, and a very subtle but fantastic choice by the director.

I think the reason why it works better than the others is that it's a less direct remake than the others; true, the core story is the same as the 1950 film (as both are based on the same fairy tale), but the live action film is sufficiently different to the animated film that it stands on its own two feet (and thus isn't constantly compared to the original).

I dont understand why this movie wasn’t praised more. This scene is breathtaking. I’ve never seen a live action fairy tale nail a dress so perfectly. It’s literally the most beautiful gown I have ever seen and far exceeded my expectations

I liked the color and the general look, but it seemed a little too heavy. Especially when the prince lifted her that second time, the dress seemed to go limp to me. The color though, is absolutely the most amazing shade of blue I have ever seen.

I used to work at a bridal store and we had a replica of this dress shipped in and i unpackaged it steamed it, and placed it on the mannequin. It was not made with the same material as the one on the film ofcourse but the replica had layers of tool and very light weight organza. the original gown is actually quite lighter than it looks the top layer of the gown is silk crepeline, very thin light weight silk. The layers underneath are made up of a synthetic called yumissima, a light, expensive material or so google says lol

My favorite part of this scene is when they first speak to each other, the way the prince is in awe of her beauty and is so flustered that he can barely talk. Also note that he was looking straight into her eyes the whole time and not her body, that's what makes this scene so special to me.

You're so right; I hadn't really noticed that before. This scene is so special to me too. It's as though we're peeking in on these two caring, loving people, experiencing love at first sight & it's so palpable. I've watched this scene many times over because of how it makes my heart feel & it's artistry. It's also incredible how they encircle each other on their horses through most of the scene, which couldn't have been easy at all & yet, they make it look effortless; And that feels a bit like a dance between the two of them too.

Cinderella’s gown in this film makes Belle’s (Emma Watson) ball gown look like a sackcloth. The difference...Emma told the costume designer to make the gown understated (AKA “cutting creative wings off of the designer ending up with a basic AF dress that didn’t fit the story or style era in France of Marie Antoinette”). Personally, I always thought Leighton Meester would’ve made a perfect Belle (Blair on Gossip Girl). She can sing beautifully, and speaks French fluently.
@cluelesscrispy4 жыл бұрын
It’s ok not to wear a corset. Fanning didn’t wear one on Maleficent. And she still looked incredible. Yes I agree with you. You can be strong and feminist without looking too masculine like in Aladdin. Yes I agree that Watson murdered the movie with her opinions. Like the ear cuffs in Beauty and The Beast (which made no sense, just to be modern when it shouldn’t)
@commandoclo4 жыл бұрын
The original gown design from Beauty and the Beast, imo, wasn’t even a corseted dress. It could have easily been recreated without one, the skirt is entirely wrong, the neckline should be off the shoulder and they make it bright yellow which is too gareish irl as opposed to a pastel or gold. Overall it’s just gross whereas the Cinderella dress here is different while being just as magical as the original
@cluelesscrispy4 жыл бұрын
commandoclo I agree it was too yellow. If they could not recreate something better than the original don’t change it. And yes the off shoulders would have been beautiful.

The color pallet of most of the dresses in the background are also too similar to one another making it even more blending with the background. Cinderella's dress is simple but unique because of its simplicity, lack of jewelry, and having a vibrant color than the rest, making it stand out within the ballroom. @YuuKamijo5 жыл бұрын
@@emilywandosen8472 Not that I think Beauty and the Beast is better than Cinderella nor vice versa but you're missing the point. Belle is beautiful but her beauty is also unconventional for her time. She wasn't into fancy makeup and being garb by the fashion sense of her time. She's beautiful albeit not the most but what makes her standout his her simplicity, her intelligence, and her openness to see underneath appearances. Hence, she was able to look past the Beasts' hideous look and bad behavior. It works that they casted Emma Watson for the role. It helps that she previously played as Hermione, the character herself is bookish and was written as an ugly duckling then turned into a swan. So going by the story, it mattered more that the production placed more emphasis on Belle and the Beast's chemistry.

That dress. Flows like the ocean and the same blue as the ocean. Heaven and opulent prestigious beauty. Look at them both... gorgeous actors. Palpable and tangible chemistry. Look at her face at 2:17 to 2:19. Ah. So much emotion, she was nearly in tears of euphoria and happiness and revere. Awesome movie.

Honestly, the best moment for me in this is the King's face. Sir Derek Jacobi conveys so much with those five seconds of silence, and it always tugs at my heart. And the score is simply sublime. Patrick Doyle is a genius, and this is a perfect example of why.

Is it just me or was this version better than the animated literally just because she went to the ball in hopes of meeting Kit not the prince so instead of a rich wealthy man she had never met before it was her friend she had in fact briefly met, she didn't want a happy ending with a prince she wanted her own happily ever after with someone who loved her despite technically being a serving girl.

But also even in the cartoon she wasn’t trying to meet a prince, she didn’t know he was a prince until after the ball when she finds out about the search.
@clarar31385 жыл бұрын
She wasn’t looking for the prince. She just wanted to go to the ball to be free and have fun
@jaybonn59735 жыл бұрын
It's not so much better than it is an entirely different story. In 1950 Cinderella she wants to go to the ball because to her it's a place of escapism from her horrible life as an indentured servant, she wants one night to get away at the very least from her abusive house hold. One night to not lose her sanity, to have a good time. It's kinda just happenstance that the Prince meets her. What I find super endearing in 1950 is that the Prince notices Cinderella not because of her beauty or any shallow thing like that, it's because of how enamoured she is with the dream like palace she found herself in, so much so she is wholly unaware of the precession happening not 50 feet in from of her. It's that feeling of, hey look over there, someone who has no interest in all this formal stuff, she's just in her own little world. She has every opportunity to see me and I could give her everything she could ever want yet she decides to be swept by this unfamiliar place. (From his perspective) She's a girl who seemingly wants more out of life than to be locked up in a house for her entire life. I get that. ❤ that's what I see in the 1950 interaction. And it's beautiful, subtle, but beautiful
@ikogarcia81225 жыл бұрын
But she wasn't really looking forward to meeting the prince in the original version either. She just wanted to have fun even just for once.
