I like Cinderella 3 because it feels like one of the only "feminist" retellings of Cinderella that actually gets what the original story was all about and doesn't just make superficial changes to make her 'stronger.' Like, yes, there's more action in this one, but the story doesn't act like Cinderella was 'too passive' in the original, and recognizes that her kindness was its own form of strength and that honesty and love and goodness are virtues worth fighting for -physically or otherwise.

Anastasia was genuinely inspiring to me as a child. I'd never seen such a complex, empathetic and genuinely hilarious female character before. It was the first redemption arc I'd seen in media and the first time I think I'd ever seen a female character be allowed to make mistakes and learn from them. Her humour is on-point, her flaws actually affect her behavior, and she is completely relatable in her clumsiness and her lack of belonging in the world. I've always wanted more media focused on her because I think she's one of the most successful redemption arcs and one of the most compelling characters in Disney canon.

The dynamic between the King and Anastasia is honestly one of the best things about Cinderella III
@wonktonk185
@wonktonk185 2 жыл бұрын
If you think about it the whole Disney Cinderella series shows all the paths children of abuse can take in relation to the cycle of abuse. Cinder is an abused person that never continued the cycle of abuse. She never turned to abusing others either physically or emotionally to make herself feel better she kept her head up and got out of that situation. Anastasia is the abused person who did continue the cycle of abuse but was able to get out. She was cruel to Cinderella and took out all her frustration on her until Cinderella was no longer there as a quick fix to the anger she had against her mother. Instead she saw that her family was abusive and so was she and worked to better herself, make amends, and get out of the situation she was in. And finally Drusilla is the abused person who continued the cycle of abuse for the rest of her life. She goes from person to person (first Cinderella then Anastasia) being mean and even physically abusive. She stays by her mother's side no matter how cruel she is to her and other people. This is 100% not intentional on any of the writers parts but it's an interesting thing to see. Also how this dynamic is seen a lot in modern Cinderella adaptions like Ever After. Or at least the sisters aren't on even levels of power with one being the dominant one and the other being the submissive and usually dimwitted one like in Ella Enchanted.

@cainyourkids

You know what I love about this? Even though, as you've said, this was not 100% intentional, looking back on the first Cinderella film - it's often Drizella and Tremaine who *initiate* the cruelty, and Anastasia follows second (this is clearer during the scene where the stepsisters practice with musical instruments; Drizella blames Anastasia for going off-tune and starts whacking her, if I recall correctly). A case of 'everyone's doing it, so maybe I should too' - it's not an excuse (since she doesn't develop until III), but it's very interesting how smoothly it flows!

I hate that fan fiction in general is seen as 'cringe' because I am curious to explore the stones the creators left unturned. Cinderella III is pretty much an AU/What if...? done right. The plot changed, but the characters haven't, so we get to explore these new scenarios and oportunites. At the end of the day it doesn't matter if it's canon or not, it just gives you newfound appreciation for the characters and the original story, like Steve Rogers still choosing to fight even though he doesn't become Captain America.

One of the coolest subtle details about Ana's redemption arc as that, without changing her facial structure, she was drawn a lot prettier as she became kinder and happier. The artists stopped drawing her face scrunched up from unflattering angles or her smile as a grimace. They started drawing her less like her mother and sister and more like they drew Cinderella. It's such a subtle shift that adds so much to her character arc.

disney's cinderella is an adaption of a hundreds of years old tale that they did not create. I would argue that writing and creating an expansion to that which has little to nothing to do with the source material constitutes as fanfiction, but honestly the semantic argument here isn't really important, since I agree with your actual points.
@madeniquevanwyk
@madeniquevanwyk 2 жыл бұрын
I don't know how specific the definition of fanfiction is, in my book I also see it as a derivative work from original characters that aren't the author's own creation, and in that case I do agree that I think it's fanfiction, at least technically. But the fact that it was made for profit and not shared in a community of fans, is probably where the waters get muddied. Fanfiction loses its main purpose if it gets put behind a paywall, I believe.

I think it's about time rather that feminism itself. The critiques helped to create deviations of the clasic role model for girls (wich Cinderella was part of) , that was límited to be kind to others and always with romance as an ending or reward. Now with different kind of roles models and lessons works like Cinderella can shine by themselves without being part of something repeated, limiting or harmful.

For some reason, the whole series of Steven Universe always felt like fanfiction to me. Stuff that at the time could only happen in fanfiction happened in canon, and it was such an important part of the story too. All the drama and different ways the characters felt about each other had such a fanfic feel to it. Felt like any ship was possible, like any dark theory could be true. Coming from the mlp fandom, where all those things always stayed in fandom, it was so refreshing to see a story explore it's characters so deeply and dedicated to even the darker parts of it. Maybe THAT'S what gives things the "fanfic" feel. Not being scared of changing the status quo. She-ra also feels this way to me.

I've been meaning to watch this movie for a while. If this video doesn't stop my putting it off, I don't know what will. I love "Cinderella" in general and I am happy my favourite director Kenneth Branagh was the one to direct the 2015 film. I also have an interest in regional variants, having read "The Girl with the Rose-red Slippers", which comes from Ancient Egypt, and "Fair, Brown and Trembling", which comes from Ireland, and I am always interested in variations on the story be it regional, a modern reworking or what have you. I really loved this video and will recommend it to others.

Cinderella 2 truly was what made me fall in love with Anastasia and I am glad that in there, they showed that even a character who was originally depicted as a Villain (even if it was a side one) can be redeemed if they wanted to. Yes, I know other Disney characters has shown this too in the past before her, but I also like that it also showed us that there is more to her than what we originally saw. So the fact that Cinderella 3 took advantage of this redemption of Anastasia and did it better, makes me even more happy! I would’ve been so upset if they kept her as a villain again after they reset everything and if I recall, they did show a small hint of Anastasia with the baker again. So I love that she still is able to find her true love in the end no matter what the universe or timeline is.

As someone who writes fanfiction of the character analysis in canon variety, I highly appreciate stories that keeps characters _in-character._ Many of the fanfics on AO3 are generally pretty good about characterization since there’s a heavy focus on tropes and tags focusing on specific aspects of a character’s personality traits or relationships. Many are borderline professional in their quality, often developing their own subfandoms (such as Passerine, Dirty Laundry, etc.) Wattpad, on the other hand, generally has fanfics that fit the wish-fulfillment part where the world/status of the characters is more interesting than the characterization evidenced by how its tags focus on genres. Ironically, this also means that original works tend to thrive better in Wattpad than AO3. I like to think that the distinct “average quality” of the stories is due to the tagging system.

Honestly, Anastasia came to be my favorite character. I like that she's not beautiful by appearance, she's not graceful and she can be clumsy. Despite all of that, she too wants to have the same happy life Cinderella gets and goes through her own way of getting what she wishes for in her own way.

I arrived here to see your review of Cinderella III but I also witnessed a nice speech about fanfictions. Even though I'm not a fan of direct-to-video sequels in general, I consider Cinderella III as the perfect sequel and the best direct-to-video sequel ever. I even prefer Cinderella III over the classic Cinderella film. To be honest, I'm not a fan of the classic Cinderella from 1950 and the live-action remake from 2016. I just find them meh. Cinderella III on the other hand destroyed my expectations in the best way possible. As an aspiring fanfic writer, I found your speech about fanfictions really interesting. My best friend has also given me some tips about creating fanfictions in general. The reason why I want to create fanfics is if I'm not happy about the directions and conclusions the official canon did, especially for my favorite characters. In my fanfics, I also include themes that the creators of the official canons were too ignorant or weren't brave enough to have like mature philosophical and psychological themes and most notably LGBT representation.

To be honest, it's like people forgets that emotional strong characters exists and take the concept of "strong" as physical strong, which again, there's no problem with that but if the character doesn't take a build up with their personality, then it feels like the character is just beyond bland. I feel like both types are really important for a character, in my opinion.

There are just genuinely amazing fanfictions that you can't help but wish it would have been canon or be made on-screen. When I write too, I strive so hard to line it with canon, tbh. Cinderella 3 is a representation for me of how it would have felt like if those fanfictions I adore came to life or be canonized. Like, if great fanfics feel canon though it's not, this vid talks about the other way around, yet it still emphasized this film's beauty because many fanfics are actually amazing. I love how you explained the characterizations on how little reference they got from the original yet it feels so much like them. You could already have an impression of a dork in the prince in the original, and they expanded on it lol. I also love how they never made Cinderella bad ass in the new one, they just showed what side of her she ALREADY had from the original. OG Cinderella is admirably brave and patient, but willing to fight for her dreams on the time she knew she finally has to. That's just what the 3rd film showed. I'm so happy my favorite princess had the best sequel treatment lol.

Honestly writing fanfiction is super fun if you get more basic characters like in Cinderella. It’s probably why I like cookie run so much, a large pallet of characters that are fairly 2 dimensional but with good snippets of potential, and it’s great to see it unfold in fanfiction. The format of a running game with minimal dialogue has given a lot of creative freedom. Though the characters have gotten a lot more complex tbh. Someone has legit religious trauma as a baked good. It’s crazy. I’ve read some really good fanfiction of it, and seen one called a character study, and I really get what they mean. Fanfiction is such an under-appreciated medium that helps people expand their writing abilities and express their love of a work.

Every single character in this is so fantastically true to their older versions. It literally feels like we’re watching real people develop and share more of themselves as their lives go on. I can’t help but think someone WAS writing this like fan-fiction, but just happened to also get hired by Disney through their lifelong love of Disney’s stories. Basically, I’m calling it: a fanfic-er got hired and wrote this story. That’s my theory for why Disney made something as well thought out as this.

Thank you for saying all of this! AND saying that fanfiction is actually pretty amazing! The majority of people use the term 'fanfiction' thinking it's just badly done, cringy stories 13 year old girls wrote, when in reality *there's so much more to it than that*. The badly done fanfiction does exist, because it can be written by literally anyone and posted where anyone can see it, but there's also a large amount of good fanfiction and the longest piece of human literature happens to be a fanfiction. Fanfiction is underrated and someone needed to say it. Thank you, and thank you for your wonderful review of this movie.

Cinderella 3 is one of those movies I remember very vividly and very fondly. Cinderella always deserved her happy ending, but this version of the story has so much fun and personality to it that I'm glad that this one is technically the canon timeline! It's also a valuable message, I think, that it's okay to have moments where you feel like you're at your lowest point, it doesn't make you weak. If anything, it makes your optimistic moments more powerful.

What I love about this film is how it brought out the pure wickedness within Lady Tremaine. Yes, she’s pretty bad in the original film but she’s just an archetypal wicked stepmother, like the Queen from Snow White. Here, she’s downright evil to the core and will stop at nothing until Cinderella is miserable, even if that means harming her own daughter in the process.
