Diamond Castle is a fascinating movie because even though Barbie movies were becoming increasingly feminist with “Princess and the Pauper” and “Island Princess” having female allies, it was the first movie in the franchise to try and turn from romantic subplots altogether. You can tell that the introduction of the boys and the blatant friendzoning of them is meant only to subvert expectations and draw attention, but because of the complete 180, it just makes it seem like Liana and Alexa are in love with each other. Something tells me they dialed back on this approach in later films because of its unintentional implications.

Barbie Mariposa And The Fairy Princess is literally a wlw romance, a sapphic retelling of Romeo and Juliet. All of Mariposa and Princess Catania's interactions are romantic tropes: they go on a date, practice rock skipping, exchange gifts so they can always remember each other, dance together at a ball, help each other face their insecurities...the entire movie is so gay that when the forced heterosexual romance happens at the end, it feels like Mattel straight up slapping a "no homo tho"

I'm not trying to ruin anyone's headcanon, but is exchanging gifts automatically a romantic trope? I say this because in the movie Red Heat, the two cops exchange their watches, because Schwarzenegger's character claimed it was a russian tradition to exchange gifts to remember each other... although, when i think about it, it is incredibly easy to make a headcanon of Schwarzenegger's character in the movie as being gay! If anyone wants to make a queer reading of a 1980's movie featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jim Belushi, i'm all for it!
@pina_nina_fresa
@pina_nina_fresa 3 жыл бұрын
@@bernardomarkuskampffdemelo4323 I totally agree with that. I feel like a lot of "romantic" are just things that you can do with your friends especially in different countries they do different things. Like kissing eachother on the cheek is a common greeting between friends in other countries. Whenever I go to Mexico I'm always greeted with two kisses regardless of gender. But here in the US it's seen as a very romantic thing or something only done from mother to young child. Or holding hands, in places like Japan holding your best friends hand is common and here it's a romantic thing too. I was always confused how everyone saw The Diamond Castle as "super gay" because Alexa and Liana reminded me of me and my best friend. To me they just seemed to have a very sisterly relationship and maybe it's because I was raised in a household that was very close and hugs and kisses were normal. Maybe it's because I grew up showing affection constantly that affection to me appears very different to me than it does to other people idk

@@delilahjohnson9953 I don't see why you feel the need to complain about people having fun and finding comfort and coming up with their own headcanons for harmless children movies. If it upsets you that much, then just leave and let people enjoy themselves. Saying that 'Gen Z makes everything gay, stop shoving it in our faces' is kind of homophobic, especially when there's so much heterosexual media that's been shoved into OUR faces, with positive LGBT representation only appearing in recent years. You have your thing, now let us enjoy ours in peace. Cheers. Oh, and about the sexualising thing - nobody here is doing that. Your comment suggests that joking about something being 'gay' is immediately sexualising it, and I personally find that to be a very strange and creepy ideal. Also people do care, representation matters, it's a kids movie from our childhood, that's why we care You can be certain that I have watched the movie, multiple times and when the guys' reaction to them being carried off by a rainbow is "what's wrong about this picture" "everything" the subtext is pretty bold, but that's my interpretation of the scene, no one is stopping you from thinking of them as roomates and close friends.

Regarding Ken being gay, I remember at one point to increase Ken doll sales, some of the designers looked at what they thought was popular at the time and ended up looking at gay club fashion & giving Ken a cockring. It ended up gaining a lot of popularity with gay ppl at the time, but was quickly pulled from shelves once they realized what they did. Considering Barbie’s origins/inspiration, it’s unsurprising some sexuality is involved in popularizing the character lol

Fairytopia trilogy is interesting in that Elina doesn't have a love interest, in the first one they try to make Prince Nalu smitten, but they backpedal on this in the sequel by showing he has feelings for Nori and Elina just isn't interested. And earlier, the oracle confronted the two about what really matters to them: Nori's love for Nalu and Elina's identity as a fairy.

And what about Linden in "Magic of the Rainbow"? As a kid, this was the obvious shipping with Elina....I mean, there is no official love interest, but this was my own interpretation and I don't think that Elina is supposed to be an icon in this matter. nd Fairies is a difficult comparison, because fairies are actually rarely depcited in love, marrying or having babies at all.... I mean, in the past, you couldn't have a male best friend, without regarded as being in love (or you couldn't touch a man's hand without being engaged - in the past). But hey, it is friendship between girls, and not each caring act or friendly word makes one gay; and apart from Diamond Castle, I think we shouldn't interpret too much in it. Somehow, I 'm perhaps old-fashioned, but I was never thinking before of Liana and Alexa being kind in love with each other. I didn't like the movie as a kid because I missed a love story. I just knew that the boys weren't a match for them. And I could now accept this "connection" as somehow gay. For the rest of Barbie movies; I just think friendship-love (Greek: philia) or or caring-involved love (Greek: Agape) shouldn't be interpreted as erotical love interest (Greek: Eros) Because all is love in my opinion, as much one could love animals or books (and feels it on a certain way). But I just don't like it when everywhere the rainbow is interpreted as gay symbol, even if it is used as it;I love all the colors in the rainbow, but colorful doesn't mean automatically queer and trans and bi-sexual. Love is much more than being a couple, because love has many shades.

another thing to note! In Barbie: A Christmas Charol, I noticed that Eden only really blows up in the beginning when she walks in on [dude-who-I-already-forgot-the-name-of] flirting with Catherine. Although it's never stated, I always read that as Eden becoming jealous that her best friend/love interest was becoming closer with him than with her. That scene is sooo interesting, especially rewatching it with the knowledge that Eden is a victim of childhood abuse. Henna also didn't seem to have or thought she needed any friends. So why would she go out of her way to be so kind to Mariposa if she didn't at least like her romantically just a little bit? She also wanted to rule the kingdom alone with only the monsters (I forgot their name sorry) by her side. And they didn't really know each other before the first scene of them talking. So how could Henna possibly have known in advance that Mariposa potentially could turn out to become a good ally to have?

I mean a villian having a crush on the hero is such an interesting concept in general. I really love it and I ship it 🥰 Also she had no idea that Mariposa could be a threat. She was very shocked and unprepared when she saw that Mariposa had the flower to heal the queen so it's not like she was kind to her because she knew that she had the potential to stop her. Not to mention that she wanted Mariposa to join her even though Henna already took the flower away and almost won, she didn't need Mariposa's help at all so why did Henna try to get her to join her and why didn't Henna try to get someone else to join her? Henna definetely wanted Mariposa to like her because she had a crush on her, I don't really see another logical explanation for the special attention Henna gives her

@@delilahjohnson9953 I’m sorry you see gay people as strictly sexual. I’m a gay person, and I find sex repulsive. I watched this on repeat when I was younger, and it was one of my favorite movies. I liked it because I loved the plot, the colours, and the dresses. I liked the relationship between the girls, but I never saw it as sexual. I saw it as two people loved each other and were happily living together. It could be a platonic or romantic love. LGBT+ characters in children’s media has never been treated well, usually used as the villain. Of course Barbie would have a male love interest. People like you see LGBT+ people only one way, and it makes it so much harder to exist when people see us as something negative. And I only “make things gay” because I never saw myself reflected in the media I grew up with. I never saw an asexual non-binary person. I never knew it was an option and I struggled with my identity for a long time because of it. I want LGBT+ characters in children’s media so an LGBT+ kid like me won’t have to struggle with themselves like I did and so that people like you can deconstruct their ideas about gay people and treat LGBT+ people as people. Beyond that, I hope you have a good day.

Henna and Mariposa (the attention Henna gives to Mariposa makes it obvious that she has a crush on her there also isn't a good enough reason why else she would be so fascinated with her) 5. Raquelle and Barbie were during almost the whole movie big rivals and they both wanted to save ken so Barbies Stylists who also happened to be fairies decided to bring them into the fairy world. and there were moments where Barbie and Raquelle acknowledged each others strenghts and complimented those (for example: when they were riding those unicorns Barbie pointed out how good raquelle is af riding and how she trusts raquelle to lead the way) this and that happened they ended up in magic prison bubbles that couldn’t break, that was when Barbie and Raquelle opened up to each other on how Barbie always wanted to talk to raquelle but thought raquelle hated her and how Raquelle thought Barbie wouldn’t like her because she got popular so fast and raquelle even said how she always admired her and wanted to be her friend- and their love and admiration for each other just destroyed that prison😟

@@delilahjohnson9953 delilah i cant do this anymore this is the sixth time They had male love interests//bi and pan people exist yk?? plus im pretty sure they left the guys for eachother lmao i don't get why Gen Z-ers try to make EVERYTHING gay. // like Juliana said, gay people exist and want to see themselves represented in popular media Like nobody cares.//// if nobody cares please stfu and stop copypasting the same comment, its getting boring for me to reply to them with the same text plus it's a KIDS movie, stop sexualizing it.///if you think a lesbian relationship in a kid's cartoon is sexualization i got some news for you, buddy, you're the problem!! being gay isn't inherently sexual!! surprise!! wow!!! would never have guessed it!!! The whole point of the movie is to symbolize how strong FRIENDship is. // alright this one is understandable

I've had this discussion before but not here so I'll say it again, Barbie is such a girly show that it completely eliminated male recognition because no guy was watching it, when barbie wears a pretty dress it's because she wants to wear the pretty dress and she feels good in the pretty dress, not because she needs to appeal to some guy or change herself, and that's why so many people think she's part of the lgbtq+ community. In addition she is also portrayed as very strong, reasonable, and capable, she has had tons of jobs, compromises and understands others needs and what makes them comfortable, and when she feels something is wrong she takes action against it. As a kid I never saw it but I always imagined Barbie to put bigoted people in their place because that's the kind of character I saw in her, a strong, independent but understanding, role model that I could aspire to be

I also love the idea of Barbie being a lesbian and Ken being gay and them being childhood friends (because we all know that we are like magnets, I cannot even count the amount of childhood friends of mine ended up being part of the community as well) and every one around them being like "you are soulmates" "you need to date!" and them being like "suuuureeee... of course..." They strike me as gay friends who would go to prom together.

What's sad about this is that if Mattel actually makes a movie with actual LGBTQ representation, I'm 100% sure they're gonna forget how good they were at being subtle about it and they're gonna make ONE queer character who's entire character description is "is queer"

would also like to point out that just like there is always the barbie model, there is also the “female friend” model. Meanwhile the quote on quote “love interest” can and will vary, model-wise. If we think of each movie as Barbie and the same characters just reused or remixed, why would the female friend be that important? unless, haha… they could show her as having no friends as a way to show her being alone but they often don’t do that, but if she’s struggling with feelings for her friend, that makes sense

There's one ship from Barbie movies that I shipped before I knew what shipping meant. Elina and Nori from "Barbie Fairytopia: Mermaidia". Because, as we all know, the second-best way of resolving a love triangle is ignoring the axis (my favourite one being putting them in the polyamorous relationship, but I feel that Nalu is friendzoning them both way too much for this to work). Now, what this says about my slight addiction to enemies to lovers is debatable.

I did the same except with a Sindy doll who my mum had given a shorter haircut to. I eventually got a Prince Charming but then, most of the storylines followed one character who wasn't interested in guys and all the 'popular' girls head over heels for him, not understanding why the main girl wasn't as well I don't think me being ace was really that surprising

And also I think, about the whole following traditions thing, that it can stand as (as well as so mamy other barbie movies) an allegory for how afab individuals are socialized to stick to norms and to be obedient and follow tradition. A theme Barbie is inherently pushing against (her many careers and such. Which I love whoever was in charge of all that because they went "hey, we have a popular toy whose main demographic is little girls that gives them an outlet to express themselves. Let's use that to empower generationsof young women." (not that only girls can play with dolls. Just I'm pretty sure that's what happened. Especially since children project their self image onto their toys.) And then they did. And it was great.) but she doesn't reject her feminity to do so. Barbie embraces her feminity unapologetically and tenfold. In fact, if I had to think of a representation of hyper-feminity let alone feminity I don't think I could come up with a better candidate. She also takes care of her sisters, but the people in charge or her brand have never once push or implied the idea that she had to have children and they give off this idea that she doesn't want children or has never even thought about it. AND EVERYONE IN AND OUTSIDE OF HER UNIVERSE IS COMPLETELY OK WITH THAT!! And it's awesome. And god, I could talk about this all day.
