It always seemed so funny to know that at some point the Joker had to have watched this movie and I wonder was it pre scars? Was he already the Joker at that point? It’s funny picturing him alone and maybe tearing up a bit watching that scene😂 I know I’m looking into that way too much but I’ve had that thought for 16 years🤪

Rod was in the last year of his existing contract. He was offered another 3-year contract, but he wanted more money. So, instead of accepting that contract, he decided to play out the final year, with the expectation that he would play really well and increase his value. Had he gotten injured, this decision would have backfired and resulted in getting even less money, or no money if the injury is bad enough.

The sister was played by Bonnie Hunt, who starred in Jumanji with Robin Williams. She also wrote and directed a great romantic comedy called “Return To Me” with Minnie Driver and David Duchovny.

I was obsessed with Return To Me as a teenager. The acting in the movie...specifically the banter between the grandpa and his friends just felt so real. Like they just stuck a microphone nearby and pointed a camera at them as they went about their day.

In 1991, Anita Hill is a lawyer that testified in front of Congress and accused U.S. Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas, her supervisor at the United States Department of Education and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, of sexual harassment.

Also, there is an extremely strange story about Clarence Thomas in Hunter Thompson’s last book, involving a cocaine dealer, a trailer home in Nevada, and a police raid. They say Hunter committed suicide after that was published, I’m not so sure.

The "betting on each other" - Rod is playing out the end of his contract without another contract waiting on him on the belief that after the season is over, he will be a "free agent" and able to sign a new contract with a different team for a better deal than the Cardinals offered him. The risk is that if he ends up seriously injured that affects his ability to play without having signed a new contract - he is unlikely to get a better contract and might not get offered one at all if he is too injured to play well. That's what Jerry was saying - "If you get injured, you get nothing"

I lived in Tempe, Az (where the Cardinals played at the time) when this movie was filmed. The last scene during the game is a combo of real plays from a cowboys vs Cardinals Monday game (where the Cowboys crushed them) and scenes with Gooding and Cruise that were filmed in the same Stadium with hundreds of extras as a fake stadium crowd.

Jonathan Lipnicki, who plays the cute kid, was a fairly well known child actor in the mid-90's to the early 2000's, and he's still acting today, though nowadays he's also known as an MMA fighter. Another one of his early roles that he's well known for is as George Little in the 1999 movie "Stuart Little".

Fun Fact: The story for this movie was reportedly based on real-life Orange County agent Leigh Steinberg (who makes a cameo in this movie as Troy Aikman's agent, which he was in real life). Steinberg's ex-partner David Dunn tried to lure away many of Steinberg's clients, just as Jay Mohr's Bob Sugar does in this movie. Another Fun Fact: Jonathan Lipnicki showed up on the set one day telling everyone that "the human head weighs eight pounds". Writer, produce and director Cameron Crowe liked it so much he wrote it into the script. Also, Regina King was really pregnant during the filming of this movie.

Cameron Crowe knows romantic comedy so well - make sure to see SAY ANYTHING & the film that truly inspired this film THE APARTMENT directed by Billy Wilder (who's vastly influenced Crowe's career to the point of trying to cast him as the philosophizing agent mentor but he declined)

Yeah, Cameron Crowe definitely specialises in rom-coms that guys are happy to sit through. You should really check out "Singles". It is to 90's bands what this movie is to sports, and features cameos from members of "Pearl Jam", "Soundgarden", "Tad", etc.

Almost Famous (2000) is THE Cameron Crowe film and one of the best films ever IMO.. you guys definitely need to see it if you guys haven't already!

Cameron Crowe started as a very young journalist writing for Rolling Stone magazine. If you watch Almost Famous you'll get his take on his story. He's directed a number of good movies. In answer to George's question about musicians coming up to play at your table in a restaurant: If you are in a Mexican restaurant you have to expect a mariachi band. Years ago I starred in a low budget horror film in Florida. We had a production party at a nice Mexican restaurant. A mariachi band came to our table and started to play the theme to The Good, The Bad And The Ugly. One of my fellow actors and I looked at each other across the table and began to do all of the whistles, all of the hi-yis and all of the hoos-hahs! It was great. If you don't know what I'm talking about then you need to watch that movie.

I had forgotten Cameron Crowe directed this. For another GREAT movie of his, you should check out "Almost Famous" for which he won his only Academy Award, for best screenplay. It also won the Golden Globe for best picture, musical or comedy, and another for supporting actress for Kate Hudson who had a breakout performance. The movie is based on Crowe's true life story. When he was 16 years old, he was a writer for Rolling Stone magazine and went on tour with bands like Led Zeppelin and the Alman Brothers. The main character in this movies is loosely based on things that happened to him or that he saw and heard about from others he met at that time. It's a great movie, with great performances and an even better soundtrack. I'd put it in my personal top 5 favorite movies.

Please check out Cameron Crowe's ALMOST FAMOUS. It's a semi-autobiographical account of his experience of becoming a rock journalist while still in high school. It's one of my favorite movies of all time and a great coming of age film with some really good music as well

I really love the way the film subverts certain tropes. Most movies would have Jerry be a jerk in the beginning and then have become a better person at the end of the film, but here he has his epiphany about what an asshat he is at the start, only to then immediately regret the mission statement and mostly revert back to his sleazy, selfish self, job-wise. So, he's aware, but he's struggling with actually doing the right thing. The romance plot does a similar thing. It kicks right off with the awkward kiss and groping, then turns full-on sex(y) and they even get married, which is how most romance movies would end. It's so good and, yeah, it feels so authentic. Cameron Crowe is great at that. I'd highly recommend Almost Famous and Say Anything, also by Crowe.

So I hate to sound like one of those Gen-Xers, BUT...this is, in my opinion, one of those films that I find myself saying, "They don't make them like they used to..." It's such a good story. Is it a bit heavy handed at times? Sure. Like many things in the 90s it can go a bit overboard. But this is one of my favorite Tom Cruise films. He's got the energy and charisma to just make you fall in love with him. And that's why Tom Cruises... lol And OMG..Cuba Gooding Jr...he def deserved that oscar. AND I suggest you look up that award show of him receiving it that year. It's priceless lol DEWIT.

Such a great movie. Terrific cast with Cruise at the height of his charismatic movie star powers. Cameron Crowe really knew how to get the best from him as well as from the rest of his cast resulting in an Oscar for Cuba Gooding Jr.

The "risk" that Rod takes is based on his contract. Usually when a player is about to enter into the final season of their contract with a team, they are allowed to, and often try to, negotiate a new deal with the team for once the current contract expires. It protects them in case they get injured during that final season. Going into the season with no deal means if Rod gets injured, then his current deal expires, he's hurt, and will then probably never sign a new deal. If he signed that shitty deal, sure it sucks, but he'd be guarenteed 1.7 million over the 3 years after this season, even if he's injured. This is the risk. By risking, he's able to get a far better deal eventually, but that was the gamble.

The strange thing about Cruise movies is that his costars often puts on incredible performances. Like Cuba Gooding Jr in this movie, but also Renee Zellwegger. Like Dustin Hoffman or Jamie Foxx. You'd think that Tom Cruise would eat up all the screen time, but he actually thrives on good performances from his costars.

Yes, it was the same Clarence Thomas. When he was nominated to the Supreme Court, his Senate Hearings were dominated by accusations that he had committed Sexual Harrassment when he worked in the US Justice Department. In the end, he won his confirmation by a very narrow margin, mostly along party lines.

If I remember correctly, this movie is actually an allegory to how Cameron Crowe was treated when he wanted to make an earlier movie, I think it was Say Anything(not sure) but it was a movie everybody bailed on him over. The movie became a hit/cult classic. This movie is about how he believed in his dream and though those that claim they believe in you will abandon you easily, believe in yourself and do the thing that you love.

More trivia: At the end when Jerry is waiting for Rod to come out of the locker room, he has a non-verbal sign with the coach that turned him down for a better contract before. Jerry signals he’s going to need more money now that Rod’s a hit. The actor playing the coach is Glenn Fry, cofounder of the Eagles.
