Yeah, the guy looking for the "Sailboat" picture is supposed to be the "Snowball" character, but as it was played by another actor (and played FARRRR differently), Smith conceded MALLRATS is more an "Alternate Universe" to CLERKS (even though he uses relevant events like Julie dying and at rest at the funeral in CLERKS)

Half the cast of this movie is in Chasing Amy. Also missed in this movie was that when they talked about the girl dying swimming at the beginning of the movie is the same girl that has the wake in Clerks. Kevin Smith movies also have these strange tie overs.

@@AI_Image_Master Well of course, he's a comic book geek. Comics are infamous for these self-contained universes where characters make cameos and cross-overs all the time. Joey Lauren Adams (Gwen/Girl in the change room) and Kevin Smith began dating during "MallRats" post-production. Kevin Smith has gone on great lengths what she meant to him, and how the relationship profoundly changed his outlook on life. He wrote what many consider to be his best movie, "Chasing Amy", about Joey and their relationship.

I ran a small comic shop when this movie came out and there was clearly a time before this film and a time after - for us comic book collectors/fans of that time, 'Mallrats' was what the whole Marvel/DC Universes are to comic fans now; no film hit like it did: it spoke to us, related to us and, to be honest, exposed us. Man, I miss going to a mall, just hanging out with friends, too.
@mojoshivers
@mojoshivers Ай бұрын
I think Mallrats is an under-appreciated film in View Askew-verse. It isn’t as ground-breaking as Clerks and its humor is even more broad than that film, but I like the set-ups and Jason Lee is amazing in this. I also like how it really got Jay and Silent Bob into their own as secondary characters and started the idea that all Smith’s films can be interconnected. However, Chasing Amy is actually my favorite Kevin Smith film. It’s his first real attempt at doing something (mostly) dramatic. I would love if you took a crack at reacting to that one.
@jeffkoenig7402

Agree with basically all of this, and I think one of the main things Mallrats gives us is a peek at how the Chasing Amy main cast came together.
@mojoshivers
@mojoshivers Ай бұрын
@@jeffkoenig7402 For sure. Those first 5 Kevin Smith films were so incestuous with casting. He really loved hiring all the same faces to be in his movies, even as secondary characters, so much so that in later movies some of these actors had to play multiple characters in cameos. Lol
@kentonkruger8333
@kentonkruger8333 Ай бұрын
The only real issue with this movie is the dialogue is too clunky. I's still clever and well written, but works far better on the page. It's hard for the actors to spit a lot of it out in a natural way, especially a lot of T.S.'s speeches. Brody's stiff isn't as bad, partly because Jason Lee speaks with a very unique cadence that allows him to take the breathing pauses without sounding unnatural even when it breaks the natural rhythm of the words.
@mojoshivers
@mojoshivers Ай бұрын
@@kentonkruger8333 T.S. does sound stilted in some lines, but I think Smith is usually good about finding actors and actresses who can make his dialogue sing. I think it’s telling London never became a regular in the View Askew-verse because I think both parties realized his cadence wasn’t built for the way Smith writes dialogue on the page.

Some facts. Jason Mewes was on heroin at the time of filming, and kicked the addiction in 2010 after Kevin Smith convinced him that they'd make a podcast together if he did. Jason Lee (Brodie) and Ethan Suplee (Will who can't see the sailboat) later went on to star together in My Name Is Earl. They became friends after Giovanni Ribisi (Ethan's friend) convinced him to go to acting school when they were teens. Kevin Smith cast them in Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Dogma. Ethan Suplee is my personal idol in my weight loss journey as at his heaviest, he was 520lbs, and dropped to 220lbs. He got down to 9% body fat at one point, but put a bit back on as he realised being chubbier got him more roles. But he is a weightlifting beast now.

Jason Lee was a brand new fresh actor for this one. He was a pro skateboarder beforehand (on the level of Tony Hawk, who he literally competed with) and decided to retire in his early 20s. Jason Lee mentioned that a few of the actors gave him notes on his acting ability. Concerned he wasn't doing very well, he went to Kevin Smith about it and Smith said "They're giving you notes because they want you to do worse. You're upstaging them all! Just keep doing what you're doing." Lee and Ethan "Sailboat" Suplee would star together as brothers years later on the TV show "My Name is Earl."

YESSS. I love Mallrats! :) This was one of my favourite movies back when it came out, still love it. I'm glad you enjoyed watching it! :) And please do continue with the View Askewniverse, each movie is such a 90s/early 2000s classic. Very few other movies manage to capture the 90s vibe like these movies do.

Simone, you were right....his name was Stanley, Stanley Lieber. He shortened it to Stan Lee and made it less "ethnic" sounding (like most comic guys in the 40s)

Chasing Amy is Kevin's third film in the view askewniverse and his opus. It's an amazing piece of work which is a tale of two halves where the first half of the movie is a pure Kevin Smith-esque raunch-fest comedy, but then the second half takes a turn and the movie turns into a David Mamet play and Gen X tragedy taking a huge swing at greatness and Smith absolutely crushing it with a big flex and knack for grand drama as well to his signature comedic styling talents. The movie is a showcase for Joey Lauren Adams who at the time Smith had met on the set of Mallrats and they became an off-camera real life couple during the filming of Rats and Chasing Amy. Then they broke up and some of their break up also wound up as creative fodder for Chasing Amy which is pretty brave of Kevin as an artist to reveal that much about himself, even as an audience insert character in the form of ridiculously handsome goate-sporting 90s prime Ben Affleck. The studio was dubious about real life Jay being able to pull off fictional on-camera Jay so had forced Kevin to cast a very young Seth Green to play a back-up Jay, basically an understudy should the big brass decide real life Jay wasn't believable ass. But it all turned out to be a moot point. Everybody in Chasing Amy is like an encore cast reunion runback from Mallrats, but playing musical chairs with roles where if an actor was the main leading man in one, now in Amy they were the sidekick or if you were the film heavy in Rats, you were now Amy's main protagonist. And so on. Amy is an unmitigated masterpiece and big part of the view askewniverse continuity and where Kevin continued to tie in Characters from the Amy movie with ones from Clerks and Mallrats, showing a real natural gift of interconnecting all these eccentric East coast often rudderless Gen Xers together into a nice shared universal collective whole.

Great points, yet Seth Green and his friend Breckin Meyer ("Clueless", "Road Trip", the live action Garfield movies) both got to audition for the role of Jay, yet both sabotage themselves because they both liked Clerks and felt they couldn't measure up to Mewes' raw performance, and he had NO formal training as an actor.

I don’t know where the whole “Lois couldn’t have Superman’s babies” thought experiment came from, but the earliest I remember reading something like it was an essay by Larry Niven in a collection of sci-fi short stories. It was titled, “Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex”, from 1969, if you want to check it out sometime.

Claire Forlani, the leading lady, starred in the movie Meet Joe Black with Brad Pitt & Anthony Hopkins. It's Martin Breast's masterpiece. If you don't know the name Martin Breast, then you're not a cinephile. He directed Beverley Hills Cop, Midnight Run, & Scent of a Woman.

6:06 You'll probably hit it in this movie, but the studio didn't want to let Jason Mewes play Jay in this movie, even though the character is based on him. They wanted Seth Green. Kevin had to go to bat for him and even then they had a probation period at the beginning of filming where they could fire him anytime. Crazy.

The actress who played Brandi is currently 52 years old. I remember renting this movie the week it came out on VHS. Where in the actual hell did the years go? You start working and suddenly your entire life just flashes past you in a blinj of an eye. One moment you are a Mallrat, the next you chase kids off of your lawn 😂
