"It's all i've got" makes me cry every time i watch it. As someone who recently turned 30 and whose friends are all wildly more successful than them Gary's character hits really hard. I'm nowhere near as terrible a person as him but the pain of loss of potential is something i keenly feel. Hot Fuzz is my favourite Cornetto movie but this is the only one that makes me cry. Thanks for watching it. Also i'm sure someone else has said it but Gary was hospitalized for attempting suicide, that was where he was at the beginning of the movie. He had decided to try again and wanted to relive his best memory with his friends before he did it. Which makes the entire movie even sadder.

Some easter eggs found in the movie: The First Post: Where they started the pub crawl The Old Familiar: Similar looking pub to the first one and where they met O-Man's sister (an old familiar, since Gary, Andrew and her have history). The Famous Cock: Gary was barred and cock is slang for a jerk/asshole. The Crossed Hands: Where they met the robots and when they left the pub they crossed hands The Good Companions: They entered acting like they don't know about the robots to not arouse suspicion (The sign of the pub is of a theatre mask) The Trusty Servant: Where they met the Reverend Green who is now a crony of the robots The Two Headed Dogs: Where they met the twins The Mermaid: Where they met the "Marmalade Sandwich" who are acting as the siren to lure them. The Beehive: Where they fought in the past and in the present. A place crawling with robots and where Mr Shepard told them about the robots and their hive mind The Kings Head: They went in after Gary banged his head to the wall to show that he isn't a blank The Hole in the Wall: The beast ran through the pub creating an actual hole in the wall The World's End: Where the world ended. The names: Gary "King": The leader of the group, Andy "Knight" ley: Gary's trusted best friend and guardian, Steven "Prince": Gary's rival and 2nd to Gary for Sam, Oliver "Chamberlain": Chamberlain are household managers and he sells houses, Peter "Page": a page is a boy in training, Gary said that Peter is someone who the group always look after.

wright has said that this part of the trilogy is one big metaphor for that feeling of when you go back to your childhood/teenage hometown as an adult and everything feels the same but also slightly...off because the town and you have changed in big and small ways since you lived there. gary is so desperate to hold onto his cherished rose-colored memories of that town, something just about everyone feels at one time or another even if they hated growing up, that he's become completely maladapted for adult life. it's inflated nostalgia taken to the (almost) terminal point. (one way or another, by drinking or his own hand, gary was destined to die early and frustrated before the night the world ended.) to me the hometown stuff honestly makes it the most relatable of the series, even if there are bigger laughs in the other two.

@latech76712 жыл бұрын
There is a lot of deeper meaning behind all three cornetto-movies. Most of the meaning actually comes from personal experiences of Wright, Pegg and Frost. I know that the first one was because Pegg and Frost were stuck in this loop where every day seemed so similar and Wright wanted to get them out of it (he was basically the Girlfriend). The second one I have forgotten right now but I know that one underlying reason was that they wanted to make a Coop-Movie that showed the (british) Coop-Job as amazing during a time where the cinema was bombarded by Gangster-Movies and one reason was literally because Edgar Wright wanted to have a big shootout in his hometown (Newton Haven, the set, is the town he grew up in). I don't know all the details about the bigger story behind The Worlds End (it is probably the one I know the least about) but I do believe the main reason why it happened like this is because Pegg had a massive Alcohol-Addiction Problem during his career which almost destroyed his career and life and I think this was his way to cope with that story and relay to others how dangerous stuff like this is.

So glad that unlike most reactors you did all three films. I hope you don't mind me recommending one you won't ever have heard of. IT's an iconic British film and very important in movie history, as well as being a great laugh. Ealing Studios, Kind Hearts and Coronets. The first really dark comedy, it stars Dennis Price, Valerie Hobson, Joan Greenwood with the great Alec Guinness who is playing no less than 8 different roles. The American censors were so outraged by the film that they insisted on half of Greenwoods lines being cut and the ending of the movie being changed for the American release. The original British version is a must watch for a film buff and yet no one seems to have done a reaction to it. In June 2019, a new 4k restoration scanned from the 35 mm nitrate original negative was released by Studiocanal in UK cinemas, along with DVD and Blu-Ray versions. So it is out there to watch and react to....please, please, consider doing so..

Appropriate that you've recently watched A Few Good Men. Think back to the scene where Markinson gets into his full dress uniform before blowing his brains out, George called it the second he saw the uniform on the bed. This is basically what Gary King was doing in the movie - he shaves, gets into his sisters of mercy 'dress uniform' and arranges one final hurrah, at the end he was planning to kill himself - ending it on a high. This movie is (amongst other things obviously) a checklist of signs to watch out for in a potentially suicidal friend.

I've drunk in a bunch of the pubs featured in the film, including the World's End ("The Wilbury" these days). Interestingly Letchworth was founded as a dry town as part of the Temperance Movement in the early 1900s. There wasn't a single pub in the town until the late '60s. If you're in Letchworth I can recommend the Arena Tavern (the King's Head in the movie)...

George, I can’t link to the article here, but there’s an article called 25 More Pints: Revisiting The World’s End that explores the deeper meaning that you were looking for. A couple are: In a normal movie about going home, the whole premise is that the town is the same, but the character is different. In this movie, every character is basically who they were in high school. They’re the same, but the town has changed. 2. Instead of Gary changing to become more mature and socially acceptable, he forces society to become like him. 3. Gary is a King. When the Network talks to Gary at The World’s End, at first it calls him “Gary King, of the Humans.” But at the end of the conversation, the Network calls him “Gary, King of the Humans.” Like “Arthur, King of the Britons” in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Gary literally is the King of the Humans. And there is definitely a reading of this movie through the lens of the Twelve Steps.

And Reece Shearsmith, whose "Oh yeah, I hadn't thought of that" in the Robot Wars episode is one of the weirdest yet funniest line deliveries ever.

Allegedly for the scene where brosnan's mouth and eyes were glowing, they put an actual blue light in his mouth. And director Edgar Wright was surprised Brosnan was cool with it. I think I heard it in the commentary.

"Paul" is another great fun sci-fi movie with Simon and Nick movie. It has been overlooked by almost all reactioners, but it is perfect for comic and sci-fi con geeks.

Simone wore the perfect 'T' shirt for this movie. Great reactions .

the locations used are a combination of two 'New Towns' in the UK. Welwyn Garden City and Letchworth Garden City which is to create the idea of an english 'Everytown'.

20:50 - oh, come on George... She must be at least 5'6". Edit: if I remember correctly, the fight in the crossed hands used the direction of the folk Wright worked with in Scott Pilgrim (people who had worked with Jackie Chan). One can certainly see the influence in the action and camera work.

I may have recommended this before, I can't remember, but you two would LOVE Spaced. It's a series from the early 2000s. It's directed by Edger Wright and stars Pegg and Frost. Honestly, it's hilarious.

The five main characters are in reference to the Renaissance due to last names: King, Knightly, Page, etc. Also all the bars names tell you what to expect: first post is first bar, old familiar is the exact copy of the first bar, famous cock is where Gary is recognized, the mermaid has "sirens", the beehive is a hive with a "queen", hole in the wall gets a hole in its wall, etc

George, the pub at 9:41 that looks like the same location is called "The Old Familiar" so it might be the case that the first and second pub look the same on purpose.

Random anecdote. This film was shot in Welwyn and Letchworth Garden City in England, the first two garden cities in the world. I live nearby Welwyn and remember the hype seeing the film crews for this. Guess it was super convenient for them to film there as Elstree Studios (original star wars, Indiana Jones etc) is a short drive away.

I read online that their original idea was that the movie is supposed to depict how when you go back to your home town after a lot of years you feel like everything has changed, people don’t know anymore, and you’re suddenly strangers in the place that used to be home.

I’m sure that somebody will have said it in these comments, but just in case they haven’t, I remember reading somewhere that the inspiration for The World’s End pub is based on The World’s End from the Sandman graphic novels.

My uni had a pub crawl, you where supposed to have a drink in each of the 14 pubs on campus and then swim across the lake. For some reason they banned it, not sure why, and the pubs stagger their opening times.
