The late film critic Roger Ebert said he laughed so hard at the scene with the dead parakeet's head tapped on that he thought he was going to need to be hospitalized. Dumb and Dumber, to me, is film one of the Holy Trinity of Farrelly Bros films: Dumb and Dumber, Kingpin, and There's Something About Mary.
@RonJomero
@RonJomero 2 жыл бұрын
The Farrelly brothers wanted Jeff Daniels to play opposite Jim Carey and were extremely adamant about it. The studio did not like the idea of him in that role and came up with a scheme they figured would shut down the brothers' choice of actor. They set a limit of $50,000.00 to offer Daniels, assuming he would turn it down because of how small a paycheck it was (for him, at that time). Daniels happily accepted the offer and jumped at the chance to act with Carey.

Regarding the ending: the original script had it so that Lloyd and Harry would go with the swimsuit models, giving them a happy ending of sorts. Jim Carrey refused, saying that their characters would be too stupid to accept the offer. The Farrelly Brothers agreed, and we got this ending instead. It fits far better imo.

There is a Prequel to this show Called "Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry met Lloyd" which did not star Jim and Jeff, but two younger actors as them. A year later in 2014 "Dumb and Dumber To" came out with Jim and Jeff returning for a sequel 20 years later. Most agree they were both awful.

You have no idea how much watching this has cheered me up! I can’t help thinking that a George/Simone road trip would be a very similar experience in many ways… 😁 This movie was absolute peak Carrey, and it could easily have been a one-man show, yet Jeff Daniels kept up with him all the way along, man! Carrey deserves a lot of credit for that, as he wanted an actor to play opposite him instead of another comedian, thinking it would make for a better onscreen partnership… and he was right. Daniels is the movie’s secret weapon. Go back and look at the “most annoying sound in the world” bit - Carrey ad-libbed it and you can see Daniels is caught off-guard and starts to break, but he joined right in and kept the joke going! Also, excellent job on the ad, Simone!

For people my age this is our baseline for Jeff Daniels. This was the first we had ever heard of him and though “stupid comedy” was his thing. Everyone was shocked to see him in Speed playing a regular role. Still to this day when I see him in serious roles I’m surprised.

My mom, who was always stoic and not one for frivolous things, absolutely loved this movie. I was utterly destroyed when my dad told me it was her favorite movie. She watched it every year right up to the day she died. I also discovered she liked dirty jokes and being the gay son, was the only one who could get away with making her laugh. I loved her dirty laugh when she would try to hide it. I was also the only one who could get her to smile for a photo because there was always the threat I would say something untoward. All I had to do was give her ‘the look” and she would giggle. Best photos of her ever.

You just can't contain a guy like Jim! Many of his best scenes are improvised and memorable lines are often completely spontaneous. Remember the "most annoying sound in the world" from this film? You could probably tell this wasn't in the script by the genuinely horrified look on Jeff Daniel's face as Jim leans over and lets him hear it. It was off the cuff in typical Carrey style. And in the bar scene in Aspen, the line "No way... that's great. We've landed on the moon!" was also made up by Jim right on the spot when he saw the framed newspaper. Some say Jim hasn't taken any dramatic roles lately due to the poor box-office performance of his previous ones. But apparently, he will only perform in a movie that has a completely positive message. He has struggled with depression, and due to his own personal belief system doesn't want to project anything negative.

The crying throw up scene I always took it as Jim Carey character being over dramatic, you see him fantasize scenes in his head all the the time. So like in a soap operas when the character is so shocked they pass out or throw up from the shock, so is Lloyds character, thats what makes me crack up.

It was pretty good the way Carey oscillated between wanting to bawl his eyes out and wanting to throw up. One could say he was heartbroken by the betrayal, then disgusted at the same time. He reminded me of a cat with a hairball.

So this was 1994, the first time an Actor had 3 movies released in one calendar year! Ace Ventura, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber. Jim and Lauren met for her audition for Ace but was passed over but they started talking and then she was cast in her role for Dumb and Dumber. They were married in 96 and divorced in 97...

That can't be correct, perhaps it was something like having three number 1 movies at the top of the box office or something similar. Many actors have had 3, or more, movies released in a year(going back many decades), where they were the main star.

I loved the whole movie, one of the best comedies, especially that one in a million scene and ironically Jim Carrey and the actress did date in real life and also a funny story about the toilet scene that Jeff has told Is that after the films release he was in a golf tournament and crazy enough Clint Eastwood, of all celebrities him, who was also there came up to Jeff and complimented him on that scene in particular and told him that he was in tears in the theater and said it was the most hilarious thing that he's ever seen and it was because Clint went through a similar situation in real life, on a first date with a girl and had to use her bathroom, used it but the toilet was broken, you can't make that up, that's just amazing 🤣😂

I think it was Cam Neely (Sea Bass) who said that they had filmed the bathroom stall scene so many times, and they weren’t happy with his reaction. So without telling anyone, Jim pulled his pants down and as soon as Cam opened the door, all he saw was Jim’s ass and the reaction on his face is what made the movie. 😂
