Terrific! Been trying to see this in its correct format like this for ages, and all I could find was an unwatchable cropped 4:3 version. Thank you! This has now put me in the mood for another terrific spy thriller: The Quiller Memorandum, 1966, which is on KZbin and well worth watching!

great little movie, Assignment K, also known as Department K, if they named it Preparation K I still would have watched it....Stephen Boyd was such a good actor to watch....at several scenes in the movie, he almost looked like Roger Moore in a James Bond moment.

I was 16 when this came out. Austria and Germany were exactly like they are portrayed in this film. England was more "swinging" but Austria and (many parts of) Germany generally looked far more, clean, ordered, tidy and elegant. Even at 16, I could see that England was headed to become a bit of a dump. It's heyday was between 1963 and 1969. Come the early 70s, it seemed to take a rapid downturn. Now, London and many parts of England look like middens.

This almost reminds me of the ski scenes in The Pink Panther, and it was shot just a few years after. Stephen Boyd (real name Billy Millar) was in major films like Ben Hur. Another spy flick he did several years before this one is: The Man Who Never Was, based on a true spy story from World War II.

What a cast! Nerdy laugh from Boyd, very nice music, Sir Micheal redgrave, beautiful Swedes! What a gem of a film, that makes forget the plot (there is a plot deep inside). A hip, mod, great film. And in case you are wondering, that tall blond spy, with the red ski, is Jeremy Kemp, the German General Streck in Top Secret! LOVE THE FILM. DON'T MISS IT. Hope that there is a better resolution copy, somewhere. Edit: Found it in Bluray!

The Monthly Film Bulletin wrote: "Routine spy thriller, unimaginatively scripted and directed. The entirely conventional settings include the inevitable night clubs, expensive hotels and ski slopes (where the travelling matte is much in evidence). Stephen Boyd is bland and wooden as the toy tycoon/spy; Camilla Sparv has little to do but look alluring; and Leo McKern and Michael Redgrave appear fleetingly and to little effect. The plot meanders from dull beginning to dull end with nothing of interest in between."[5]

Sadly this beautiful scene is spoilt at 20:52 as Boyd follows the drama school rule and does a completely unnatural ‘always-turn-to-face-the-camera’ move instead of just turning his head to the left.

A James Bond type of a ski chase -- this ain't. Interesting how they filmed the ski gondola and ski sequence at the same Austrian town where they filmed the gondola sequence in the same year for "Where Eagles Dare." Overall, this is basically a B-minus flick. Photography is okay, script is worthless, acting is direly lacking. During some of the dialog scenes, the music is so loud you hear no discourse. Like I said -- a B-minus. Did I hear anyone holler "C-plus"?

I'M not a Stephen Boyd fan. CERTAINLY NOT IN THIS KIND OF FILM. HE'S MORE SUITED FOR THE OLD BIBLICAL FILMS, as a Roman soldier/gladiator such as Ben Hur,just like Charlton Heston, he looks out of place wearing a suit, unless it's made of armour, or cowboy clothing

Fairly good original sound track, the ski track parts were not particularly interesting, except the light parade at night. The storytelling only develops slowly and isn't terribly surprising. You'll watch till the end, it's a bit too silly to be serious, and too serious or not silly enough to be James Bond. A level movies would include The spy who came in from the cold, IPCRESS file (for quite different reasons), The Naked Runner etc. This one I'd rate a good B movie, nothing more nothing less. But then again I might be prejudiced because one of the ladies in the beginning of the movie said something not very flattering about bald men. She prefered the hairy cardboard one in stead of the pleasant bald man. Women... :0))) They'll never learn.

I can think of no other story involving totally independent agents, and the "other side" was never identified in particular.

'Learn'? they don't need to learn anything since deception is wired fundamentally into their personalities. These pictures were deliberately made in a '60s 'hip' way: if you want to see real crap, see the Matt Helm and Frank Sinatra efforts.
