Russell Reilly actually it ends where the book ends except there were a few additional pages published only in the UK that covers those events, but most people haven’t read that version and Kubrick himself said that he didn’t know there was an extended version when he made the film.

in the clockwork orange book, alex actually does become a good person, he wants to be married, he matures basically. the film ending is in the book, but the film implies he cannot be cured, whereas in the book, he is cured, and it is quite inspirational.

A similar deconstruction in an adaptation would be Lav Diaz' somewhat loose adaptation of Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment called Norte, the End of History, in which the protagonist's torment over his intellectually-inspired violent actions causes him to descend even further towards darkness and loss of identity rather than be persuaded to confess and seek redemption.

I had so much fun watching the film (really... not joking...) and I'm sure that is what Kubrick wanted. A dark comedy. Yet, the only funny scene you have are before the Ludovico experiment.

By far my favorite “reluctant hero” is the underrated performance by Tom Cruise and Rain Man. He goes from a total asshole who only wants to use his brother to gain wealth, to someone who really cares about him. And he does it with such nuance and subtlety that you don’t even find a moment where it changes. But Dustin Hoffman‘s one trick pony took the Oscar. Go figure.

If I had to add an eleventh category (and I love that each number in all of their lists is more like separate categories as opposed to true rankings but that's a whole different conversation), I would add a category for arcs of healing. Like a character coming to terms with someone's death or other terrible life circumstances. I would nominate the arc of Shin-ae Lee in Secret Sunshine. It's a Korean movie that follows a young widow as she moves to her dead husband's hometown and another tragedy strikes. It doesn't follow the traditional three act narrative structure, but is still incredibly moving. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good arc of a tragic, flawed character.

Counterpoint: I still enjoy Watchmojo. Yes, when it comes to dissecting movies, there is really no comparison between Watchmojo and Cinefix, but that's like comparing the clothing selections of Wal Mart to that of Macy's. Of course Macy's is better, but you can't also buy all your groceries at Macy's. Watchmojo has a good selection of lists that have nothing to to with movies.

Boyhood's fault is that too many people saw it. It fell into the mainstream. Cuz it is similar to Before Sunrise in that, nothing really happens, nothing overly out of the ordinary. I love both but I think that Before Sunrise gets a lot less hate cuz lesser people saw it. It is possible that I am overestimating internet hate.

Bud white in LA Confidential in LA Confidential. He hates Ed Exley with a passion and, in fact is going to beat him to a pulp for sleeping with his girlfriend. And while he's kicking his ass Exley is trying to reason with him and let him know that the chief is corrupt and killed jack and others. And he stops mid beat down because of his sense of moral justice and beciase he know that Exley is telling the truth and that he was being played. And solving the case is more important than his beef with Exley. And he then uses his rage to take on the corrupt cops. Loved his character.

This list seems more predictable than Cinefix's usual habit of more eclectic lists, but I think that is a reflection on how large of a role Character Arc plays in how universally a movie will be understood and appreciated.

Cinefix's lists are still opinions but I know that they had a lot of research in order to decide on which spot each movie takes. This isn't a Top 10- List, each spot is based on a topic and that makes an unbiased opinion, and that's why Cinefix makes one of the best movie-based channels I've seen on KZbin.
