AA doesn't affect performance at all. Neither does any OpenGl setting. Cinema 4d has a problem with processing deformation...that is, it's just very inefficient and slow. It's best to turn off displacers and other deformation when you need fast timeline scrubbing. Also, cloners will kill a scene.

You are correct about deformation causing crashes. Especially with Octane in the past. However, Anything that uses the GPU's resources will have an effect on performance. Minimizing the resource which the viewport takes from the GPU will contribute to better performance. Even if the difference is miniscule it still mitigates the risk of crashing and restricts the amount of processing power in use. OpenGL in Cinema 4D has been known to cause performance issues. If the OpenGL settings are maxed out it will be using a small portion of Vram. This has been known to cause issues with Octane and Redshift running out of Vram.
