Does this effect affect rendering time of scene? For example you want to focus on objects near to camera and keep background blurred. Would it decrease time compared to no blur since there wouldn't be that much detail on blurred objects? Thanks

yes depth of field definitely increases render time, dependent on the quality and number of objects in the scene

How about the physical camera in the C4D lite which comes with the actual After Effects Versions? I tried to rebuilt this, but unfortunately there is no way to change the camera to physical. I just found the Hardware Render, which opens up a slightly compareable Menu, but somehow i miss the Motion Blur there. I was able to find the DoF in the Hardware Render by now. So, if anybody has a good idea or reference how i can easily switch from AE Raytraced 3D (due to Motion Blur & DoF) to the same effects and worksteps on C4D lite I would highly appreciate this

+John Mangual yes it is very important, the physical renderer and camera considers the real size of everything

John Mangual sort-of logical if you think about photo cameras in the real world. Taking a photo of a leaf @ 1.4 would simply blur out most of the scene leaving a very thin crisp area. Same lens, same aperture but this time on infinity would show everything in focus. May produce frontal blur. I noticed that on large scale scenes one can fiddle with the F-stop to absurd values like 0.1 and it would produce good DOF.

Seez asjust the fstop... to something really low.. also check the render settings so dof is enabled (and the physic renderer)
