There was a LOT of fan service in this movie, if you didn't play the games, there was a lot of things that would have been missed. They really should have titled this "Sega Fan Service" over Sonic... because let's face it, not many people had a Genesis and played anything but Sonic 2 or 3, and I'll bet most didn't even know about say Golden Axe or Bio Hazard Battle.

It felt like, you know, an ACTUAL movie instead of a cookie cutter plot with an iconic character plastered upon it. Heck, the main characters actually have some believable chemistry between them, and for once the inter-character conflict is legitimate because Sonic wants his friend to do what is obviously best for him and stop him from throwing it away, without having to copy and paste the "oh they would be best buddies if only they didn't have this one big contrived misunderstanding" subplot. The final bullshit with "the hero summons the power to win the final battle because power of friendship" is definitely a sin, but everything else is just great.

Nah, there probably isn't. I'm sure they had some concept art, but I doubt they even finalized the design, let alone did anything past that point like modeling or rendering. We don't even know if they originally planned to include the scene with Tails, it could have easily been something they added after they decided to change Sonic's design. Even if he was originally planned, Tails would have been at the bottom of the priority list and the last thing they worked on. Most likely they would have still been working on the design during the production, and since they didn't get very far with the intial concept (we only ever got one early trailer, which would have been all the footage rendered up to that point, before instantaneous backlash) chances are they never actually came up with a finalized look for him in the original style.

I'd like to point out that the way his car is parked at the start of the movie is not a sin. Actually that makes this movie the only movie where a police car is parked realistically the way they're suppose to. Being totally hidden behind the sign is called a speed trap and it's illegal. Any speeding ticket caught that way would be dismissed in court, if you could prove the police car wasn't visible, because the police legally aren't supposed to even do that. Source: My grandpa is a retired police officer who frequently sins movies for the cop car being totally hidden behind a road sign cliche.

Cuz speed traps are so fu***** LEGAL here in Germany ... the policemen are even allowed to use an ordinary unsuspicious car to lure the drivers into a false sense of security. Thr police officers doesn't even have to be cautious of the caught and pissed-off drivers, cuz normal citizens aren't allowed to carry weapons here ( to get a gun license you'd have to make a psychological suitability test and other obstacles like a logical reason why you need a gun, etc ). I just had a rigorously scientific discussion with my son about Sonic’s varying speed throughout the movie and I think we solved it. The radar gun part was Sonic attempting to hit a specific speed, not his top speed. As we see later, time pretty much stops at Sonic’s true max speed which means he’s traveling close to or at the speed of light. Hell, even physics will back me up here because accelerating mass to the speed of light requires infinite energy and as we know, just one of Sonic’s quills contains unlimited energy. And yes, I’m aware that no one will probably ever read this but I don’t care

Let's appreciate how this movie took pains to diverge from the Typical Paranormal Creature Road Trip formula: 1-Human protagonist is living their life normally, either happily or with some marital/family problem that will be coincidetally fixed by the end of the movie 2-Paranormal creature appears in their life, proceeds to cause them misery, the human gets blamed for the mayhem they cause, sometimes try and fail to prove the creature's existance 3-Contrivance leads human and creature to escape from the villain, human constantly whines about getting roped into it 4-Human and creature start to contrivedly bond with one another 5-The bond is soured by a contrived misunderstanding, most often a conversation where one of the two eavesdrops only the part that incriminates the other 6-They break up just as villain is about to strike, occasionally the truth about the creature gets out and the human is ostracized by the community or suspected to be crazy when he fails or refuses to show evidence of its existance 7-When villain attacks, they decide their friendship is more important and they take down the bad guys together 8-Status quo is restored except the creature now either lives with the human or has taught them a lesson that will improve their life In this movie instead: 1-Human protagonist is well off but is about to give up a relatively happy life to have his big break, he's conflicted about it but has his reasons to believe it's for the best 2-The paranormal creature keeps annoyance to a minimum and genuinely attempts to be cooperate, mostly because he already knows and respects Tom. 3-They both end up on the run, but human had the choice to turn the creature over to the government all along, so he cares enough to act that way from the get go. 4-They bond over meaningful stuff, such as Sonic discovering the value of freedom and making the most of life and Tom reconsidering his choices as he sees how much they mean to Sonic. 5-They have relatable conflict from Sonic genuinely believing Tom is giving up what makes him truly happy and loved and trying to make him realize that 6-They still work together, and for once not everyone treats Tom like a lunatic os berates him for bringing Sonic with him and they actually try to help. 7-Sonic ensures his friends are safe before battling the villain. Power of friendship bullshit still happens. Nobody's perfect. 8-Well yeah, status quo is kinda restored and Sonic comes to live with Tom. Still, it can be forgiven.

2:58 The reason for the quill was that it was a replacement for a Chaos Emerald. The writers thought it would have been too soon to introduce that so they decided on something else. Honestly it makes sense to use the Emeralds as a power source but, meh. Also at the end with the fight between Sonic and Robotnik, Sonic was going to recollect all the Emeralds and go his actual yellow Super Sonic form, but again, the writers thought it was too early to introduce that. So hopefully in the sequel, we'll actually get to see both of those. 17:06 Like Tails, Sonic actually did have his iconic shoes from the start. But after they went back to redo all of his scenes with the updated model, they also included this extra scene.

I wish, they even altered plot points so obviously, it was supposed to be a town in san francisco and also the scene with him going over the bridge aren't in this movie. They also dropped using tails when they originally had plans too. Would've been a far better movie that would've involved things that looked like aliens and less bs, instead of a who framed rogger rabbit type film. Detective Pikachu had the same problem, but at least this one had Jim Carrey as Robotnik to actually make it fun enough to watch.

The sudden waking up makes sense though. I remember when playing the games sonic would loose almost all of his rings and it would take him a while to get back up (this would cost you time points) it would usually happen if I would mess up during a speed run. This movie was actually really good and I think the only ones who can truly enjoy it are the og Sega Sonic fans (which is who it was made for in the first place). Sonic’s powers are heavily tied to his emotions considering that’s how he unlocks the chaos emeralds the very first time. Most of the stuff that CinemaSins was pointing out would be no brainers to actual Sonic fans (the games, shows and especially the comics). It’s not really made to be a great movie, and it does it’s job in introducing new comers to Sonic! 😊

@@mindbox44 I would say that Sonic's basically invincible in his super form, which is what the comment was referring to, but in SA2 Knuckles and Rouge were doing just fine in space exposure, so....I guess Sonic's super form invincibility is an invalid excuse here. But then in Sonic X, they don't do anything in space, except chill out on the ARK, so I guess it depends on the canon you're talking about. But Sonic's super form I think would probably enable him to be in space with no ill effects. Now you could also argue that it doesn't make sense that Sonic wouldn't be able to survive in space out of his super form while Shadow can, which is a fair point, but Shadow's immortal. He might be able to feel like he's suffocating, but he wouldn't be able to die. Anyway, the fact that the different canons are different about what is and isn't possible is a mess. So whether or not Sonic characters can survive in space is completely up to which interpretation (games, Sonic X, etc) you want to use.

Sin 43: Sonic literally said that if he’s discovered, he’d have to go to a different planet. How would he know which planet was safe if he didn’t check with his map first. Basically he needed a contingency plan so I would assume that he scouted some of the planets on this map out first before ultimately deciding on Mushroom Hill Zone
