I never took his grandfather as a psychopath per say but emotionally damaged without realizing it. When you boil down his motives all he wanted was to keep his family close to him for as long as possible and the means to achieve that was immortality and god-hood. That desire twisted him into being cold and heartless towards everyone, even his own family over time, because his desire to keep them close was that strong. It's why he hated Hanzo so much, because he was going to take his daughter and then his grandchild away from him, his family, and their forever together. Kubo and the villagers doing the kindest thing possible and showing him love and acceptance was their way of actually giving him what he truly wanted. By softening his heart he gets to have family and be with them forever but out of love, not desperation.

One thing that I found interesting is that when the grandpa is converted to a human, he has one of Kubo’s eyes. And he is no longer blind. Making him human required him not to be blind anymore to people’s suffering.

My daughter was 4 years old and begged me to take her to go see this movie. I teared up almost immediately at the beauty of the animation. This movie is so special to me not just because of the story and incredible visuals, but of the time spent with my little girl who still to this day loves this film…

One of the symbols I love most about this film is that the moon king wanted to take kubos remaining eye so he wouldn’t see the suffering of the world and be moved by it, become perfect and aloof and immortal, permanent but lesser. Instead him giving the grandpa the eye that was taken from him to turn him human and not be blind to the world was just so powerful to me when I watched it. That living blind to the worlds troubles might mean a more perfect seeming life, but you lose the chance to make an impact in this world. Little 17 year old me thought it was beautiful

In case anyone was curious, the "guitar" in this movie is called a "shamisen". They're sorta a part guitar, part drum instrument, the part at the bottom is hollow with a skin stretched over it, and the sound can change depending on the type of skin used.

Maybe this is bias but I felt that more sins off for the art and dedication in creating this alone were warranted. Kubo is one of the most thoughtfully crafted and even written family/children’s movies I’ve ever seen and especially from the 2010s. Also yes this video has reminded me that those twins are basically my sleep paralysis demons and I’ll need a week to sleep again. (This is coming from an avid horror fan too).

15:06-15:32 You know, that was something I asked as well when I initially saw this film, but now I have come to understand that was a much more cruel fate than just killing them, contorting his form and taking away the memories of what he had, and also serving to explain it wasn't that the ritual was BS earlier, but that his father had technically never died, so of course he would not have contacted him. I really love the nature of perspective in this movie. How everyone has their own story about how things happened. For mom, she found her compassion and empathy when she went with Hanzo, for the sisters, one felt betrayed and angered by someone who she looked up to while the other delighted in contorting and corrupting the form of the father (which, by the way, explained so much when you rewatch it and ties back really well to the end.), the moon king feeling like he lost his family, embarrassed by them all and wanting to keep his grandson, and Kubo feeling in his lost that he needed to defeat the "monster" who took his family away. Frankly, it's amazed me how well that aspect of the film has held up for me. Not to mention a nicely subversive conclusion in that force was not the answer to this fight, as to have been expected with the last two also finding the less obvious conclusions. TL;DR Sin rebuttle and the nature of one's perspective is great.

I remember the first time I saw this. I was young, far too young to understand the deep themes (I’m only 14 now) but I instantly recognised that this movie was something special. Me and my family were sleeping in the living room together, watching movies as we so often did. I convinced them to put on this film because I thought it looked cool. From that opening to watching alibi bring the origami to life for the first time, something inside me just knew the film was special. My family was bored out of their minds. We got maybe halfway through and my Mum turned it off and had us go to sleep. In the morning, I woke up first and instantly raced over to finish it whilst they were still sleeping. Loved every second of it, I still remember my few during the Grandfather’s monologue during the climax. The film was incredible, and now that I’m older I can appreciate all the deep, mature, subtle themes and messages and ideas that the movie pushes, and my keen eye for detail in film allows me to pick up on all the little details that so many others would miss.

The whole love conquest thing was never about a person as an object. It was about the person in their entirety. Hence why it's considered 'romantic' because it means someone believes you are the most important person in their life that they'd dedicate their life to you.

ok this was a good one. the jokes were hilarious and I agreed with most of the critical sins. I'm surprised you didn't talk about kubo being barely affected by his mother just dying, specially because it was partly his fault. that was probably my least favorite part of the movie. the man just saw his mother die because he didn't listen to her advice, but then was just trying to ass penetrate the monkey a day later. there wasn't even really scene of him looking particularly sad or feeling guilty.

11:44 You can't get decompression sickness on a breath-hold, generally speaking. Freedrivers almost never get the bends. It's on-gassing nitrogen (or other gasses, at great enough depth and time) that causes DCS, and you just can't get enough nitrogen into your bloodstream with the limited total volume, duration, and possible depth reached during a breath-hold. It doesn't really explain why he has the ability to hold his breath like a freediver, but the rest isn't an issue.

It depends on the deep you must face and the consequent pressure. 1 atm more every 10 meters more deep, it is easier for him to drown meanwhile
@DaimyoD0
@DaimyoD0 Жыл бұрын
@@ANIMATIONLOVERBT Pretty sure those guidelines are written based on research from people using breathing gas though, such as in a scuba or rebreather set up. Like it's true that the pressure change at depth will be the same for everyone. But the limiting factor here is how much nitrogen can actually get dissolved in the blood, and that is limited by the fact a freediver only has one lung-full of breathing gas, not a canister.

I've recently learned that the studio that produces these movies, Laika, is ran by Phil Knight's son. Phil Knight, founder of Nike, is actually listed as the owner. So even though these movies do not break the bank, profit margins have declined intensely since Coraline, they will be coming out as long as Nike is profitable. I love these movies, and can't wait for the upcoming releases! Edit: Reading the comments has shown these movies are loved by many, which warms my cold, pessimistic heart as nobody I know knows these films. Good looking out Sins community

This is a great film and wished yall had shown some of the credits as well. But also, i think the "You are my Quest" wasnt reslly what you took it to mean. I belive Kubo's dad was trying to get across that his dedication to making Kubo's mither happy was his everlasting quest. "You are my quest" basically translates to, "I live to sustain you and your happiness ". Its not so much objectification as it is an oath to his partners' wellbeing

It is a nice movie, but it's a big metaphor for alzheimer's/dementia. Clear signs of sun downing with the mother, and the grand father. Kubo, and his mother have eye injuries, and possibly tramatic brain injuries which can lead to dementia if left untreated. The grand father lost his sight which may be a result of his alzheimer's. During the day the grandfather is forgetful, but kinda nice. During the night he is mean, and vindictive. The sisters are only active at night, and have no actual face which make them seem more like a shared delusion.
