We had a group talk in CBT about emotions and how they're all linked (without sadness you wouldnt know what joy felt like and so on), thery're healthy and healing isnt about eliminating the "bad" ones (as again, they're all needed and compliment the more pleasant ones), its about finding balance between them so one emotion isnt overtaking the others majority of the time. That's when it becomes unhealthy (even too much joy is unhealthy as it can become forced at certain points... as demonstrated by Joy the character)

I don't think the parents "in charge emotions" are meant to signify anything bad about their characters (i.e. the mum is sad or dad is angry). Not only are their control rooms neater with the emotions sitting around and seemingly working well together, but we know from Riley's hockey game in the second movie that emotions aren't exactly literal. During the hockey game, anger is in control for a moment, but it seems less that she actively becomes angry and more just very determined. So I think Sadness being the mum's "in control emotion" is less that she's sad and more that she's sensitive, well meaning, fairly mild, whilst dad (with anger in control) is more proud, boastful and headstrong. With someone as young as Riley in the first movie, sure, take the emotions as literally as you want, but the older folks definitely have more nuanced emotion.

Considering at the end of the movie, it's shown that Riley expressing Sadness brings the people she loves closer to her to comfort her, it could also mean that Mom is a bit more tender and empathetic.

The thing with only five emotions also has another explanation: in psychology Joy, sadness, anger, disgust and fear are the 5 primary emotions that humans gain after birth and all the other emotions (called secondary emotions) come later in life and are usually a mixture of one of these five. There's also the sixth one that's surprise, but I guess it would've been hard to implement in the movie...

One thing I always remember about CinemaSins' Inside Out video is when the emotions are planning to ride the Train of Thought and Jeremy says something along the lines of "The movie just keeps inventing new solutions for our characters". The Train of Thought was first mentioned in one of the first scenes of the movie, so this would be considered a Chekhov's Gun rather than a Deus ex Machina. This was one of the first CinemaSins videos I ever saw, and that moment made it clear to me that these guys really aren't good at paying attention to the movie they're sinning

It’s the film nerd’s shorthand for set-up and pay-off, as the concept is especially important in film. Movies don’t have a lot of wiggle room, and everything needs to be important, so even small background things needs to be important to justify their presence. I.e, a gun hanging in the background at the beginning of the movie gets fired during the climax. Or, characters mention the Train of Thought in the beginning and ride it during a moment of action.

So for this part 12:08 I remember that someone made a response to this video way before you did and they brought up a really good point for this part. They said that, even if they won’t kill off joy, her being stuck down there has major consequences that could be potentially life ruining. If Joy isn’t there to make Riley happy that could cause things like depression or maybe even worse. And if sadness isn’t there either, it can make it hard for Riley to feel empathy or cry, and potentially mess her up mentally. Let’s not forget that Riley is literally running away up to this point on a bus when this is all happening, so can you imagine if joy and sadness didn’t get back in time? Like literally when they get back sadness helps Riley realize how much of a big mistake she’s making and goes back to her family, and joy helps her realize how much she loves her family and how much she’s happy to see them. It’s almost like CinemaSins just doesn’t wanna really pay attention, which is all the more funny when he acts like he’s making movies better and calling out Hollywood. And if you’re curious to who said this good point, I think the name of the channel was captain vader.

One thing I'd like to point out that I think was a fantastic detail in the movie (and is one I see that people misinterpret entirely too often.) is the emotions that Riley's parents are led by. It's a representation of how our emotion's roles become more complex over time, as we do with age. As a result, Riley's mom isn't led by Sadness, but Empathy, and Riley's father isn't led by Anger, but by Protectiveness. (Or masculinity if you wanna go down that route as I think that Riley's dad is a positive example of such.) I'm tired of people trying to posit that Riley's mom is depressed and Riley's dad is abusive because they clearly aren't. It's even more braindead to see these takes when you see Riley's sadness take on the role of empathy IN THIS MOVIE.

I honestly hate how he sins the logos for just existing, like you said if they were overly long logo sequences that stretch out the runtime it makes sense to sin that, but he sins all logos no matter if they are there for 2 seconds or 2 minutes.

Jeremy out here acting like if every single emotion ever doesn’t have a little head critter to go with it, it means the emotion can’t exist. When the whole movie’s about them learning that emotions can work in tandem to create new thoughts and feelings (shown by the multicolored memory balls at the end). Plus him being like “how is she doing anything if your emotions aren’t driving” as if he’s never just felt kinda neutral before

3:42 I also think it's a bit reductive to view the film as "One positive emotion and four negative ones". The message of the film is that there is no such thing as a bad emotion they are all good but they can go too far. Joy makes you happy which you need to have a good life but if you focus too much on being happy it can lead to you masking your true feelings which is exactly what happened with Riley in this film. Sadness doesn't feel great but it CAN allow you to express your feelings and feelings are not good when they are bottled up inside and not properly addressed. Fear is well, fear and no one likes to be afraid but it can help to keep you vigilant and help you stay safe. Disgust feels well, disgusting but it can help you to avoid potentially unhealthy things. Anger is destructive but if properly managed it can act as an alarm to when you are being mistreated and it allows you to express your frustration which is not good when it is bottled inside. TLDR: Saying there is one positive emotions and four negative ones is litterally the opposite of what the film is trying to say.

Just wanted to point out that 7:26 Riley is actually Gen Z. The first Gen Z was born in 1997 and I once made a theory that Riley is 11 years old and turns 12. The year is mostly between 2012 to 2014. I also met with a Pixar executive that told me that Riley was born around 2002. So she’s not a millennial she’s too young.

You can tell Jeremy didn’t take the film seriously because he puts Sadness as a negative emotion when the point of the story is to teach Joy that Sadness has just as important a role. Anger and Fear are the fight or fight instinct, while Fear also works for self-preservation, all of which are crucial to ongoing development and survival.

I admit I can't make out entirely what each emotion said during the bedroom decoration scene, but from what I could gather Joy focused on what would allow Riley to take care of herself first, her bed for sleeping and her desk for whatever Fear focused on what would make Riley safest. A lamp and stars to illuminate her room and a weapon next to her bed Anger focused on practicality. (Afaik) he only suggested the chair, placed in the center of the room so she could quickly sit down whenever she got home and toss her backpack or hockey gear to wherever they go instantly Disgust focused on what would look best where. The dresser could have gone anywhere, but she chose the spot she thought would look best I don't think Sadness suggested anything, but for all the others their suggestions make perfect sense for their roles in Riley's life, be it to take care of her, protect her, or simply make things more convenient and less frustrating for her. Excellent storytelling imo

12:25 Hecalls this impossible but I've experienced this before, quite often actually. Sure i dont forget it 100% like the movie shows, but my brain has a habit of blocking out a lot of memories with bad emotions associated and it takes some really specific bells to bring anything up. It could take only a few days and i'll forget 99% of it. My memory in general is just really terrible, but it is so much worse with "negative" emotions. I agree that the average person wont forget it 100% but its definitely possible to forget so much of it that it might as well just not exist in the first place.

Birdman that Korean pizza comment hurt. As someone who just went there for a month I thought that Korean pizza was garbage. I tried 3 diff places and all were amazing. The craziest flavor I had was bulgolgi, chicken, corn, red and green peppers, honey mustard and bbq. I ate all of that in one sitting. Absolutely amazing and you have to try it when you go
