Let me add this one thing. There is a video of the stage show. NONE of the cockroaches or the mice or the breaking into another cat's house is in there. It's just the MAIN cat, announcing that it's time to choose who gets to be taken to the Heavenside Layer to be reborn to a new Jellicle life. The rest of the play is cats telling you about themselves with the Glamor Cat getting harassed by the others throughout the play until she sings "Memory." I want to thank you for running this. The only reason I can think of as to why they didn't do that is because they wanted the ballet and dance elements in the movie. If they made it fully animated then the dancing isn't quite as impressive so they'd have to cut out a bunch of it if not all, and replace the screen time with actual plot. And, considering the severe lack of plot overall, this would be a disaster from the start. Maybe an animation would work for a shorter story with fewer characters, but not for a feature-length film.

And once my mom's husky howling activated her Alexa and she wound up with cops at her door because apparently the Alexa thought someone was dying

All other times the word "Jellicle" is used in front of a noun (like songs, moon, ball etc.) it's just to relate the words to the Jellicle cats. It's as if you'd say "They are American cats who sing American songs during the American ball under the American moon". Except they are not American cats, but Jellicles.

I have a lot to say about this movie but instead I’ll just point out a few things. 1) Victoria was one of 5(?) kittens in the original stage production, it was supposed to be their first time attending the ball since they had just hit banging age. 2) Victoria wasn’t actually the cat that helped redeem grizabella, her only roll was to take her hand to physically make her a jellicle again. 3) you know that part with the weird breakdancing moment that lasted forever? I heard the film-makers originally wanted to make it a cute Pixaresque animated cartoon, but the "genius" producers thought a cartoon would be too "low brow" for film audiences. Honestly, I think it would still have to be changed quite a bit for animation, since the dancing doesn’t have the same effect when it’s done by a computer as when real people are doing it, but i do think it could work a lot better than this.

Turning Victoria into the main character made everyone’s characterization wonky. The musical works partially because of *not* having a story. It’s just a bunch of really great dancers singing really fun songs and having a good time. A lot of people read stories into it, including myself, but the story isn’t the point, and adding one would likely alienate most fans.

The stage show of Cats is an elaborate, audience inclusive, over the top show that is wildly entertaining. That's why it made BILLIONS. The movie Cats is a CGI horror fest that tries to make a coherent story of a bunch of loosely associated cat songs. You can't judge both by either one.
