@@stephenking1375 its not mentioned out loud, but you can see it. Then again, its hard to see, because this is probably the first movie with Mako sharks most of us have ever seen. They are supposed to be much smaller. Hungry Shark Evolution makes them 3-4 meters, so twice as long as a man is tall. We are used to Great Whites in Jaws and all shark movies afterwards. All sharks in our minds are Great White sized. So 6-8 meters. These sharks look about that size to me. Sammy Jackson is almost swallowed whole, and the guy on the brancard scene also has jaws around the brancard, so quite big. Inside the kitchen the sharks shrink, so they can fit through doors, but hey, its a movie... Anyway, twice as long, from 3 to 6 meters, usualy also means twice as wide and twice as high, making the skull able to hold 8 times more brain volume, so it does not even have to be twice as long.

LL Cool J was the saving grace of this movie, honestly. Like, yeah, Samuel Jackson's death was a shocker, and so was that girl at the end who we all thought was going to live (and WAS going to live, until they changed it in the movie because test audiences hated her and WANTED her to die), but honestly the thing that shocked me most was seeing LL Cool J live. The comic relief NEVER lives to the end, yet he somehow became the most fun character in the movie.
Yes, LL died in the early version of the movie but test audiences loved him as much as they hated the doctor. So they killed her and let him live through to the end. Which I loved, he was awesome.

Mythbusters tested that the final explosion, three ways. One, it is possible to make that shot from that distance and hit the shark. They actually hit the dummy on the dorsal just like the movie. Two, it is possible for the charge to work, but what the amount they used in the movie does not make an explosion that large. And third, they tested survivability. Carter absolutely would not have survived that blast. Being under water that close to a shock wave of that kind would have obliterated his internal organs.
@SigmentKurosai4 жыл бұрын
Following up on what you said, their test of hitting the shark with the harpoon was done on flat ground with a still target. Not saying it's impossible, but firing at an angle and aiming at a moving target would increase the difficulty of the shot several-fold. But yes, they did confirm the harpoon could at least make that distance. They also tested whether or not the current from the battery would even carry through water effectively enough to detonate the powder bomb. I can't say their testing methods were ideal, but they ruled it a failure.

Yes! In fact, LL Cool J was the one who was supposed to die ...in the begining. He'd been so ameable and willing to try anything that they did rewrites to allow Preacher survive until the end. He loses a human-sized amount of blood because his survival was an emergency reshoot because ^. So basically, the movie was saved by his commitment to pivoting into acting a path that eventually took him to longterm main character status on NCIS most successful spinoff (both he and it are surprisingly good) Also you know, killing off the love interest and keeping him created an ending that was rather novel at the time RIP Miguel Ferrera, he spent his last years parlaying his status as a that guy villain into being a tough but fair supporting character who never truly betrayed them (but was really suspicious often, and pretended to betray them at least twice) truly a good final role for a character actor.

As sinful as the movie was it did have some decent anti-tropes and twists. Samuel L Jackson dying was a twist I did not expect when I first saw the movie, considering how big of a name he was and how his character was being set up as a hero and he was getting good screen time. Even after he died I assumed that LL would still die cuz like he says, brothas never make it out of these sort of situations, but not only do they call out that trope in the movie but they go against it and have him survive in the end. The other trope that they go against is that the primary white guy and white female, who you'd assume both make it out together alone, don't both make it out together alone like in every other movie with a similar plot; instead leaving the primary white guy alive with only the comic relief black guy who normally dies. My only problem with this scenario is that the way she died was so pointless and unnecessary and felt like some weak cop-out to go against the very grain I speak of. She could have literately just let the blood drip in the water.
@ImNorman6 жыл бұрын
That probably was one of the best twists and most memorable. All the Sins hold up, but, like many of the movies they sin, it is still an enjoyable movie to watch.
@royriley62826 жыл бұрын
Honestly the most shocking one for me was when the female lead scientist who was responsible is actually held liable for her choices by the plot. Usually such a character is always played off as innocent, the victim of manipulation or coercion, then redeemed with little consequence. Really rare to see this kind of morally gray female character assigned culpability and then held to unflinching account for her mistakes. Ballsy if campy writing in this screenplay.

Shark skin feels exactly like sandpaper. It is made up of tiny teeth-like structures called placoid scales, also known as dermal denticles. These scales point towards the tail and helps to reduce friction from surrounding water when the shark swims.
@CorpseTwist696 жыл бұрын
River Swing I was actually going to write something about this to correct his comment lol. However if you "pet" them in the direction of head to tail, they're more smooth, but if you go to pet or stroke them in the opposite direction it would be like taking a cheese grater to your hand
@apollyonabaddon17436 жыл бұрын
How much does it differ between species? It's been a while so my memory might not be clear, but at a zoo I visited there was an area where we could pet some very small sharks, and they felt very soft and smooth, kinda squishy
@CorpseTwist696 жыл бұрын
Apollyon&Abaddon I'm not sure.. were they sharks in the classical sense, or large dogfish? Most large predatory sharks have the "scaling" as referenced in the previous comments
@apollyonabaddon17436 жыл бұрын
Angelus Sarathiel after taking a look at a dogfish, that's definitely a strong possibility, and the name rings a bell After a lil bit of research, we pet the sharks at the Indianapolis Zoo and the page I found on the exhibit confirms it: "the smooth dogfish shark, also known as a dusky smooth-hound" Thanks for your help!

LL Cool J's character died in the original cut, but test audiences hated that he died and Saffron Burrows' character (who was responsible for everything) lived, so they reshot the ending so she dies and he lives. EDIT: It's why his character survived being bit and massive blood loss despite every other character dying in a similar situation. He doesn't even lose a limb, which movies generally treat as far less serious than it is in reality.

@Phaota6 жыл бұрын
Another thing you didn't sin was the constant stupidity of showing the sharks ramming their snouts into hard objects. That is their most sensitive area, full of sensory organs. They don't even like hard hits against the snout, so even somewhat intelligent sharks wouldn't be so daft as to slam into metal doors and other things with it.
@jojo-jm9gh6 жыл бұрын
Rogelio Rocha you don’t punch sharks. Ever notice how their nose is shaped like a ramp into their sharp mouth which have razor teeth? Yeah, you’re losing an arm if you try that.

@wumbosaurus91216 жыл бұрын
Spicy Waffles Punching a shark in the snout is the best way to deter a shark from attacking you. The snout of a shark is full of super-sensitive nerves called electroreceptors used to detect muscle contractions and movement in the water. If it's able to detect something that minor, then a smack to that area would hurt like a bitch. If you are so inept that you miss the swing and end up shoving your arm into nature's swimming sarlacc pit then I'm sorry, you deserve to be eaten.
